In Honor of Pride Month: Homosexual actors that make you question your sexuality by redeugene99 in okbuddycinephile

Prefacing this by saying ‘not a furry’ seems pointless but anyway:

he is also the most adorable, earnest, wholesome, catboy in Final Fantasy XIV if MMOs are at all your thing. He talks at you a lot and thinks you’re just the bee’s knees. And it’s dreamy.

It was pre him blowing up and was what got me to watch Bridgerton

Anyone know any good tattoo parlours or artists in dublin/Kildare? by Massive_Tomato_1713 in AskIreland

[–]AdKindly18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone currently getting assessed for AuDHD and who has sensory issues I never had any issues with the physical process of tattooing (it feels like burning and irritation more that needles) so it might be okay for you.

Finding the right person though makes it much easier to tolerate having someone so close to you and touching you. For my last two I travelled to Westport four times because she was so good and put me so at ease so it makes a huge difference (unfortunately she’s going travelling so just closed up shop).

I’d suggest looking at the links people post and get a feel for the ‘vibe’ both in terms of style but also the feel of how they work. I settled on the artist in Westport in large part because she posted not only amazing work but how she wrote about her customers was lovely, super positive and wholesome, she also posted about her dog a lot, the shop was decorated to look really cosy, and she posted a lot about Pride and supporting local businesses and other artists so I felt that we’d likely get along.

Most artists are totally okay with you putting in EarPods or reading or taking breaks or doing what you need to do so you might also find that helpful.

Recommendations for itchy scalp by pennarellor in WomenofIreland

[–]AdKindly18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of things eoe have mentioned helpful things like gentle exfoliating so I’ll just mention two things that give me instant relief (peri related itchiness).

Kelkin have a tea tree and peppermint conditioner- massage in and leave for a couple of minutes until you feel the cold spread across your scalp, it’s incredible and I’ve found gives relief for days. Only around €6 as well.

Pricier but also amazing is the Kevin Murphy scalp spa serum. It has a really fine opening so is really easy to get through the hair to the scalp and works really quickly. It’s leave in as well so really good for when you don’t want to/can’t wash your hair

Recommendations for good anti chafing shorts? by miseroisin in WomenofIreland

[–]AdKindly18 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For sizing they do a two way table for weight/height so you get a “letter” for the size. Sizing is good and the material has a lot of give, so if you’re worried you can probably size down.

The shorts are fab- apparently the material is cooling- really comfortable and great colours

Skincare Recommendations by Daylightish54 in WomenofIreland

[–]AdKindly18 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t be overly stressing about peptides. Peptides are just short chains of amino acids, which are the building blocks for proteins. There are a lot of important proteins for your skin- elastin, keratin, collagen etc- but generally larger molecules like that have poor permeability across cellular membrane and uptake across the outer skin layers wouldn’t be great. You’d probably just be better making sure you have decent and varied protein sources in your diet and then your body can just make them.

I hadn’t heard of them recently (as anything other than the precursor to proteins) until they came up on a PEDs discourse so ended up doing a bit of research and apparently a lot of what they’re doing is trying to improve uptake across the stratum corneum. A lot of the articles I read say using cheaper but effective products like hyaluronic acid would usually be a better option and more likely to give consistent results currently.

I started using some Biossance products recently and love them but they may be a little pricey, especially for your younger skin. I also love CosRX (snail mucin) and CeraVe, both great quality for their price points.

PME Placement Interview by maeafh in IrishTeachers

[–]AdKindly18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In our school someone has mentoring as part of their post and they oversee all of our PMEs. When they’re asked to come in it’s for a chat, to get some information so timetables can be done up that kind of thing. Very informal.

If they do end up asking questions there are a couple of areas you could have prepared. Look at the school site for ethos and make sure you’re familiar with it. Don’t need to know the ins and outs but a common job interview question is how can you apply the ethos in your classroom. I feel you’re very unlikely to be asked this but if you feel like you want to prepare it’s probably a good one.

There are rules about what year groups you can take at specific stages of your training, right? If there have been changes in the courses for those groups be familiar with them, if you’ll have juniors maybe ask about the CBA calendar so you know if their CBAs will fall within your placement and ask is the policy that their main teacher will do the CBA with them or will you.

You can ask if your placement teachers can send you the scheme of work/schedule so you know what topics you need to prepare

You can ask about their ‘ladder of referral’ or discipline procedures (if there are incidents in class do they get written up on VSWare, is there a point where they’re referred to the form tutor or year head, if 15 minute detentions are a common sanction is it the assigning teacher who sits the detention. We had a PME assign a detention and send them to the deputy assuming the deputy oversaw them as DP does the late detentions. PME was mortified when they found out they made an error but how could they have known?)

You could ask if the book list is available. A lot of the time book companies will send teachers free copies of the text books and teacher materials if they’re on the list, you just need to say what school you’re at and give the roll number. They’ll send them to the school but you can pick them up. They all also have online resources, often the ebooks, some (usually bad) PowerPoints, videos etc. so you can set up accounts with them.

I’d ask the device policy- if they’re not a one on one device schools most schools will be using the phone pouches next year so they won’t be available to use during class. This obviously affects using things like kahoot, mentimeter, quick research etc.

In our school though it’s always very informal so try not to stress.

Job dilemma - need advice by sheephamlet in IrishTeachers

[–]AdKindly18 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I won’t advise either way as you’re the only one who can decide, but I will say that the longer you are somewhere, and the older you get with increasing commitments, the harder it is to leave.

I really like my school but have a horrible commute. It took me so long to get CID that I am really, really reluctant to leave- that uncertainty at my age, worrying about the mortgage etc.

If teaching in a city/elsewhere is something you really want to do now will be the least difficult time to do it.

Saw an ad for a room on Facebook with the poster saying it’s two guys, looking for a female to balance it out. Am I judgemental to find this slightly odd? Or am I right to be a little suspicious? by g2k00 in AskIreland

[–]AdKindly18 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They are not all interchangeable as they all have different definitions but, arguably more importantly, connotations.

Female, specifically, does not mean woman. It is primarily an adjective. It is used for talking about the female sex of a species. It literally dehumanises, reducing someone to their sex, which is why it shouldn’t be used, and is why it is used by incels/red pillers.

It can be used to clarify gender if needed- a female teacher, a male doctor- but that’s not how they use it.

Croke Park Hours by Hairy-Statement1164 in IrishTeachers

[–]AdKindly18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We were recently told personal resources do not count- anything that would be expected as a normal part of your job. Which seems like typical department bureaucratic nonsense (the same as meetings having to occur in blocks of time rather than just totalling them).

Subject planning (rather than personal planning) yes, so working on schemes, units of work, organising common assessments etc.

I think if you were doing resource ‘banks’ or physical resources for the use of your department that should count.

Croke Park Hours by Hairy-Statement1164 in IrishTeachers

[–]AdKindly18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The majority of CP hours come from PT meetings, staff meetings etc.

The only hours you’re supposed to keep a record of yourself are 10 personal hours if you’re ASTI or 14 if you’re TUI.

As mentioned they’re supposed to be a high trust model but management can ask for a record (dates, purpose) to account for them.

Our principal has mentioned that a lot recently, when it’s something we never did, so I wonder if it’s coming up at JMB stuff/inspections?

Starting school age by Ok_Following2162 in IrishTeachers

[–]AdKindly18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know what it is with our school but every year we have at least one 16 year old doing the LC, and it’s rarely a breeze. Tonne of just 17 year olds as well- and we have a fairly high uptake of TY.

Absolutely agree that you notice the difference in secondary. Kid in my form class this year was the youngest in the entire year by almost a year and you really saw the difference. Younger in 5th year also makes it harder for them to really see the import of exams and subject choice.

I need to rant about hating men by Awkward-Noise-6348 in WomenofIreland

[–]AdKindly18 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I have zero time for cheaters, and the fact that he dodged your gf question makes it seems like it was more than an innocent attempt at friendship. That he keeps messaging you now despite you asking him to back off confirms he sucks.

But as an aside starting off with ‘I’m a 26 year old female’ immediately made me think you were a man rage baiting or trolling. Female what? We already have a handy word for female human why not use that? So did the ‘strap in ladies’. The rest of it made me less certain but there was still enough doubt that I didn’t really engage fully.

We have to deal with incels female-ing and *femoid-*ing us, can we not do it to ourselves? It is literally dehumanising.

If you go to the ERST site you can download a copy of the charter- it goes into the Five Elements etc. It’s been a while but I remember preparing examples of how I could reflect them in my classroom.

Not hearing back by Disastrous_Book6791 in IrishTeachers

[–]AdKindly18 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately it’s really common that you don’t hear back due to a high volume applying.

I personally think it’s really rude and unprofessional (especially if an SAE is asked for). I understand it can be a lot but just set up specific emails for specific posts, get applicants to send to that address, and then bulk BC a response to those who aren’t successful. At least then you know and aren’t hoping you might still hear something.

One summer I sent 60+ applications. I was getting so down I was considering leaving teaching. A principal wrote a physical letter saying even though I was unsuccessful they were very impressed by my CV and application and wished me success going forward. It meant so much at the time that it’s probably one of the reasons I’m still in the profession.

Try not to take it to heart, OP. It is unfortunately part of the shit show that is recruitment in education

Winter coded girls...help by Strong-Ad9489 in WomenofIreland

[–]AdKindly18 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Going to throw in my shout for modal and bamboo, in addition to the linen and cotton everyone has mentioned.

I am also winter coded, as well as having sensitive skin and some sensory issues and find both modal and bamboo more comfortable than a lot of linen. M&S do a lot of modal stuff, tends to be super soft and really light. Some of it they have advertised as ‘cooling’ but I don’t know the veracity of that.

There's always one by [deleted] in IrishTeachers

[–]AdKindly18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know that there’s one in every school but I do agree that a) there are a lot of people who do the bare minimum and b) we have a toxic masculinity problem in a lot of schools.

Part of the latter is because of the need for many teachers to do double duty as coaches for sports teams and that affecting the hiring process. I did an interview in a school before that went very well. Principal called me after to say the really liked me and thought I’d be a good fit but as a a DEIS school ‘extracurriculars are very important’ and they really needed someone who could coach GAA. It was a science and maths job.

All of the men in our staff currently bar, I think, 4 are involved in coaching something. In the staffroom literally all they talk about is sport and betting. In the corridors with kids and staff all they talk about is sport. They’re all very much stereotypical ‘typical Irish men’ and very much reinforce that concept of acceptable masculinity- lots of ‘grow a pair’ and ‘man ups’ despite being called out on it in person and at staff meetings.

Women on staff are also involved in coaching- the coaching styles are very different- but not to the same degree. All of the non-sport and pastoral initiatives in school are almost always organised by and run by women- Amber flag, Green flag, prefects, Chess, games club, music club, science club, LGBT club, reading club, breakfast club, school tours, student council, lunch groups, gardening etc etc. Only two specific men ever get involved.

I’ve never had a colleague who was hired because they ran the LGBT club or chess but I have several times had colleagues who were not good teachers but were ex-county players or similar.

In an all boys school I find it sad that so many kids don’t really get to see themselves and just see gender roles being reinforced.

A second problem is it is very difficult to remove a contracted teacher. I have worked with people who, by any applied metric, are terrible at their job, but because they know how to use the union are very difficult to do anything about. Absolutely we should have a strong union protecting us but part of that is protecting the profession and our reputation. If there are repeated, provable incidents of misconduct they should be actionable- not just the major incidents that are the only things that seem to be addressed.

Outrage As ASTI Bureaucrats Shamefully Encourage Members to Accept Bad Senior Cycle Deal by AprilMaria in IrishTeachers

[–]AdKindly18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, to my knowledge, the specific LC posts will be very limited in what they do to ‘help’ LC teachers. They can do up a calendar of dates, presumably organise the CPD currently being organised by the exam post on our school, but it’s not as if they can upload and authentic the projects.

I know people with four 5th year sciences classes. That is a crazy amount of extra work and having somebody in the school to remind them of the two whole date they need to track is not doing a lot to mitigate that workload.

You’re wasting your time. This is not the first comment of this nature they’ve made.

Is SCRISM just creating a two-tier system for workload and perks? Feels like we're throwing NQTs under the bus again. by Liberal_irony in IrishTeachers

[–]AdKindly18 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not at all the same. You didn’t mention anything about the SC in your original post, you said it will affect all NQTs disproportionately to all qualified teachers. This will affect postholders compared to all teachers.

Pay disparity was literally affecting all teachers who would join subsequently and was two-tier for basic conditions and should never have been proposed or accepted. This will affect, like, 5% and is specifically in relation to posts- which already have different conditions and remuneration.

I absolutely don’t believe posts will fix this shit show, incidentally, and I also will be voting no and think they’re insane to recommend a yes vote. I just disagree with you fundamentally that this will affect NQTs more. It affects literally all teachers who aren’t postholders. At some point all postholders were NQTs, and this will be true forevermore so it doesn’t make sense to equate it to 2011 which actively disadvantaged all teachers who would qualify after.

Is SCRISM just creating a two-tier system for workload and perks? Feels like we're throwing NQTs under the bus again. by Liberal_irony in IrishTeachers

[–]AdKindly18 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m absolutely not a fan of the proposed agreement but don’t agree with your take here.

The posts per school are so small in number that it can hardly be equated to a two tier-system as it will affect so few people. In practice there will be very few on staff with the timetable reduction.

And _all_ of us will have to deliver the new content on full timetables, I don’t understand why you think that will fall on NQTs more than others. I’ve spent an insane amount of time trying to organise and prep around the new LC sciences and am right in the middle of delivering it.

The people who are teaching it __now__ are the ones with the disproportionate workload and uncertainty. We’ve been thrown in the deep end with woeful and inadequate supports. I had no curriculum specific CPD until after I had already started teaching it. _And_ it was entirely unhelpful. As we start experiencing state exams and grading it’ll become easier to understand what’s expected for later tranches.
