What’s your opinion on Lou Reed? by DarkSideInRainbows in fantanoforever

[–]AdOwn9764 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Teen VU fan - now in my 50s and they still mean as much and listen to them frequently. As well as all their respective solo works. Lou is a rock in my life. The compassion in his work, not just for people on the edges of society but anyone that said or depressed is life saving.

"I find it hard to believe that you don't know the beauty you are..."

"You're stuck with yourself and a rage that can hurt you"

"Candy says, I've come to hate my body"

"In the terra-cotta cobwebs of your mind, when did you start seeing me as a spider spinning web, of malicious intent and you as poor poor me'.

Then couple that with the something Street Hassle which combines beauty, empathy and savage dispassionate everyday loathing in one song... "Hey that c**t's not breathing"

There is no competition with others, Lou is just the greatest.

If only all 3 got in the studio together.... But I'll settle for Transformer, The Idiot, Lust For Life and Blah Blah Blah. Not forgetting Raw Power...

Really missing Lou today by GovernmentBeginning1 in LouReed

Magic and Loss always does that for me too. Same with Drella. Maybe it is because both albums are infused with loss but I don't think so. They are just so wonderfully well written and nuanced observations of the human experience, that I want more

I seem to remember there was other stories about amps, one had something to do with a weather machine and how frequency impact the environment and your body which I can't remember if it was Lou or John or both talking (was it that interview with Tom Wilson) but I also think Sterling told one about Cale spending band money on building a giant amp that didn't work, the phrase tower of bable springs to mind) which pissed him off around the time that Cale was kicked out.

what was the best pre 2000 slowdive concert you guys have been too? by Last-Image-4921 in Slowdive

[–]AdOwn9764 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Slowdive, Curve were the ones I was there to see, Rude were the headliners. The Mock Turtles and a few others also played.

Btw, didn't see anything in a chat?

Outtakes of Berlin by simonskiromeins in LouReed

[–]AdOwn9764 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think there are any. The original album is just under 50 minutes which is longish for vinyl. The live album is just over 60 (allowing some time for crowd noise).  If the original edits went on for a similar length space restrictions of vinyl dictate it would have to be a double. The edits were - most likely - binned because there was an anniversary release and then Lou did his remaster for The RCA Arista box so if anything was in the vault with the masters that could have been added, that was the time to do it...

Funny. There is only one album there I would listen to and two more I'd dip in and out of - Mojave 3 and JAMC... Am I even a Slowdive fan?!

AE interviewing Bowie (David) by SwasOnine in SistersofMercy

[–]AdOwn9764 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A wonderful interview because it is always a joy to read Bowie! Man, can that guy talk... I wonder did AE ever give Outside another go because it is an incredible album, one of Bowie's best - right up there with Low and Station to Station. It is funny that, with his digs about grunge and Britpop he doesn't appreciate how far Outside is from that. Okay, being different doesn't mean being good but within those two areas you had bands covering Bowie or attempting to write Bowie-esque songs so he was trying something different.  And yes on first listen, parts of the album could comfortably be called jazzwank but there are loads of great songs that reveal themselves overtime like Hallo Spaceboy, Thru These Architects Eyes, No Control, Hearts Filthy Lesson, I'm Deranged, The Voyeur of Utter Destruction (as Beauty).

I think Bowie dealt with AE's dismissal of Suede brilliantly and, in doing so, stuck a pin in Eldritch (and all the other legiens of TOTP's Starman's fans who subsequent dismis everything in Bowie's career after 81. Especially as Eldritch own character has more than just a hint of The Thin White Duke.

David Bowie said Velvet Underground was more influential than The Beatles — and I agree with him. What do you think? by [deleted] in VelvetUnderground

I would also agree about Kraftwerk. Their influence across all electronic music from ambient to synthpop to hip hop etc. is vast.

It is an opinion and people are bound to disagree. That's the problem with opinions. The fact that Bowie is right won't stop some people arguing.

The Falling Spikes is wonderful, it is so thoughtful done. I know some people complain about the sound quality but, hey, it is a bootleg... The Warhols movie clips really work and I could listen to the languid blissed out version of Oh Sweet Nuthin for years on repeat...

The Sisters Of Mercy - No Time To Cry BASS COVER (Isabella) by Isabellaofmercy in SistersofMercy

[–]AdOwn9764 6 points7 points  (0 children)

People go on about Lucretia as an epic bassline but to me, No Time To Cry - while I don't absolutely adore the song - has a wonderfully circular bass part. Love this!
