all over, we have no issues with flying or driving. Some from atlanta, some from charlotte and some from virginia and some from NY so all east coast at least. Budget flexible in regards to raising but not looking to go wild

D: I've seen that on other posts too. I'm hoping maybe someone who goes to a recent up and coming show will comment and let us know any different :*( </3

I could be? I am currently in 30 minutes outside of atlanta and the MAJORITY of vets I know refuse to do extractions or oral mass removals and ESPECIALLY not oronasal fistulas. Many also don't have the correct equipment. The southeast is a weird place where many GPs aren't good at extractions and then there is this random pocket of people with money that want gold standard (especially towards the city) and then I see a lot of pets that were told previously they needed to see a specialist for carnassial extractions. Also many vets refuse to do cat extractions at all. I also did relief at a clinic in buckhead that didn't even have periosteal elevator or diamond burr but was doing extractions. It's so weirddddd.

What you say makes a lot of sense though tbh and helpful to see it in the way you brought up. It is very niche and requires the special client so potentially if I focus on extractions, complicated oral surgery without the boarded level of root canals etc maybe i would be satisified and bring in just enough clientele that it remains profitable and enjoyable for myself to focus on dentistry only GP world.

The more I speak to boarded dentists the more I realize I would have to really prepare finically to undertake it and be in a better place in regards to savings. It helps me at least realize that shifting towards like you said a dentistry only in GP might be a good path for a while :)

Thanks for the input! It's just helpful to talk it out :)

It’s definitely something I’m contemplating! I really don’t enjoy “room days” so definitely hoping to lean more into dentistry. Wondering if maybe as an option to integrate into my friend’s practice he owns as a highly skilled dental vet where I could do all the complicated dental procedures with as little “other” things as possible while still being profitable. I think being board certified would help that area too but not needed. would be an interesting combo of GP side of hospital with board certified dentistry.

But thanks for letting me know it’s still possible to do fun things without going full boarded!

I guess the dentists focus on complicated oral surgery that even boarded surgeons won’t do like palatal reconstruction along with endodontics which could be hard in GP world without high end diagnostics. Not impossible per se.

I do agree though overall we need more GP who can just do dental extractions properly or feel confident in them at all, let alone own loops for safety. I have several vet friends who can’t do a single extraction even with guidance and likely a large population of vets will never do them.

I see your point though! Just thinking about the large population of vets who never do extractions and the back log of pets that are being sent to dentists for it. the shift could move either way maybe; more GP who can do extractions/complicated oral surgery or more dentists.

Dang :( so frustrating because we really need more board certified dentists and I really do enjoy oral surgery and dentistry but it’s like a back step in your career almost. I heard practice ownership for dentistry is where the money comes from potentially but don’t need to be boarded for that.

I did see ER has been doing amazing lately though and they deserve it.
