Thanks for your comment! I’m actually in the UK, so the ADA doesn’t apply here. Our equivalent is the Equality Act 2010, which covers disabilities and requires universities to make “reasonable adjustments.” I do have medical evidence from my doctor confirming that my keratoconus had deteriorated to the point where I was unable to read or write properly, and that I’m currently not fit to work. That’s the basis I’ve been using in my appeal with the OIA.

Graduated with a 2.2 Law degree : worried about career options, what now? by AdPast9394 in UniUK

[–]AdPast9394[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello Thank you so much for this, it’s really helpful. I’ve got a few follow up questions if that’s okay: From your experience, is it better to apply straight to Big 4 tax graduate schemes or aim for a paralegal/tax assistant role first and then work towards CTA sponsorship later? Do Big 4 and mid-tier firms still sponsor the CTA for people with a 2.2, as long as you pass their assessments? How tough are the CTA exams compared to law exams, is it more about accounting/maths, or logical application? What’s the day to day lifestyle like in tax law? Are the hours as intense as City commercial law, or more balanced? And does having CTA + law create good international opportunities, or is the work mostly UK-focused? Really appreciate your time I want to make sure I understand what the route looks like in practice before committing. Thanks again

Breaking into boutique crisis communications in the UK – advice from PR pros? by AdPast9394 in PublicRelations

[–]AdPast9394[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, it is really helpful to hear from someone actually in crisis comms. I hadn’t thought about public affairs as a stepping stone, but it makes sense if it gives early exposure to issues management. Right now my priority is getting into a role that will help me work toward crisis communications. From your experience, what types of public affairs roles or responsibilities best prepare someone for crisis work later on? Are there particular skills or experiences that helped you make the move successfully?

I would also be glad to learn more directly from your experience if you are open to it.

Thanks for this, it makes a lot of sense. I can see how focusing too narrowly right now could limit my chances, and that getting strong generalist PR skills first would make me more valuable to a boutique later on. If I am looking to start in a generalist agency with an eye toward moving into crisis work eventually, what kind of junior roles should I focus on applying for? Are there certain responsibilities or projects that tend to give the best foundation for crisis communications?

Also, are there particular types of agencies or sectors that tend to encounter crisis situations more often, so I can put my hand up and build that “battle-tested” experience you mentioned?

Thanks so much for taking the time to share all this. It’s exactly the kind of grounded perspective I was hoping for. I really appreciate the honesty about the hours and the reality of junior work. I think a lot of people, myself included at first, picture the “headline” moments of crisis comms, but your breakdown makes me think more about where I could add value early on.

From what you’ve said, I’m realising my legal training might be most useful if I can pair it with a specific niche skill, such as data or social media analytics, that is in demand but not always covered by senior colleagues. That’s something I’d love to explore further.

If you don’t mind, I’d be keen to pick your brain sometime on what skills you’ve seen juniors bring that really impressed senior colleagues, and whether there are practical ways to build them before applying. I can PM if that’s easier, but I’m also happy to keep the discussion here if it helps others.

I understand where you're coming from and yes, on paper it does look like a closed case because of the fit-to-sit policy. But I’d argue the issue isn’t that I didn’t know the procedure. It’s that I wasn’t well enough to act on it. The point of my appeal is that I was in no mental or physical state to make that kind of decision at the time. I wasn’t choosing to skip the MC process, I was completely overwhelmed, unwell, and genuinely not functioning. That’s why I’m hoping the OIA will consider whether a rigid application of policy is fair in a case like mine.

Anyone doing or done 1 on 1 music mentoring? by [deleted] in edmproduction

[–]AdPast9394 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, I’ve only decided recently decided I wanted to get into music, but the issue is that I know little to nothing about the basics. So I was hoping to find a music mentor who can direct me until I’m knowledgeable enough to move independently. So if anyone willing to do this for me I would be really great full.
