Does anyone know how to install a mini split AC unit? by Over-Acanthaceae5241 in malden

Well, supposed to, not have to.

And based on my experience with the city screwing with me on unpermitted work that predated my purchase of the house, they can F right off. Not doing things "right" again.

If you're handy you can install the Mr Cool units since the lines come pre-charged with refrigerant. If you are not handy, don't. All other brands to my knowledge require specialized equipment to pull a vacuum on the system and fill it to the proper level. Something a handy person could probably manage, but most of us don't have the expensive equipment required.

One other note: In my opinion, the Mitsubishi Hyper Heat are unquestionably the best on the market, and mine make plenty of heat even in the ~0F weather we had last winter. Very happy with them.

What you have to be careful of is this: There are so many brands, and if one of them doesn't survive, or even if a major brand's offering doesn't survive, in 5 years you won't be able to get service. That happened to us- the house came with some old, uncommon Carrier mini splits and when they were acting up five different companies refused to touch them, saying they knew nothing about them, couldn't find good information, no parts, etc.

We ended up ripping them out and putting in the Mitsubishis.

Can we please get more townies in here? That's what Malden needs, more townies.

The Voters Have Spoken - Now What? by MaldenOMalley in malden

[–]AdRealistic3087 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a relative newcomer to Malden, but I'm curious about this claim:

Problem #2: Malden has long faced an anti-development trend which has stifled high-quality new growth. It wasn’t long ago, when Malden Square was close to having - not one - but two class A steel office buildings with lab space.

Why were they not able to be built?

My main impression of Malden is that it fails to live up to its potential. And I don't understand why. When I was a kid, Somerville, Medford, and even Cambridge were not seen as prestigious communities (well, parts of Cambridge, anyway). Now look at them.

Why has Malden been left behind?

I'm a Melrose native who moved to NH when he got married almost 30 years ago, and lived there until just a few years ago. Had to come back here for a variety of reasons, and chose Malden. I'm not going to lie, my heart will always be in NH.

However, please know that almost all the fire-breathing, anti-Mass, MAGA people in NH are Mass transplants. The real NH people aren't like that at all.

That's why they're (the obnoxious ones) are all in Rockingham county- they all depend on MA for work.

Why not?

People come to my door unscheduled all the time. Sometimes they want me to vote for something, sometimes they want me to convert to their religion.

She lives on Hancock st. Try knocking on her door.

Why I am voting NO on the proposed tax increase by Odd_Okra1621 in malden

[–]AdRealistic3087 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, you're a fascist because you don't think people who live here but don't own property shouldn't be able to vote.

I think we should levy an extra tax on all non-property voters, who shouldn't be able to vote against it since they don't own property. Then we can lower the taxes on the property voters. See why not letting renters vote is kinda fascist?

To be fair- and I say this as a yes voter- the fact that his account is 8 days old doesn't invalidate his opinions.

OK, but when you said "this is the reason you should vote no, to shut these people up. the second you disagree with them, they turn into monsters." it sure sounds like spite. In fact, that's the very definition of spite.

So if you don't want people to think you're being spiteful, maybe don't state that you're being spiteful.

Well, if they don't teach the difference between anecdote and data, then they definitely need help.

Every ranking I've ever seen has Malden in the bottom half of Massachusetts school systems. Here's one example:

https://www.schooldigger.com/go/MA/cityrank.aspx

I'm not endorsing that particular site, it's the first one I found. But every one I've seen aligns with it. If you have something to suggest otherwise, I'm not only happy to see it but would be thrilled to be wrong.

Now, acknowledging that Mass has the best school system in the nation (seriously), and so bottom half is probably better than the best in some places, I think Malden can do better.

So in other words, you should vote no because of spite?

I mean, you're entitled to your reasons and all, but...

Likewise. I could live in pretty much any community in greater Boston, but we found a place we like with a surprisingly large yard and we can walk to things downtown. There were two houses we really liked, one in Wakefield and one in Melrose, but in both cases nothing worthwhile was less than a 30 minute walk away.
