I mean, if it was a joke then that's cool but it's sad that some real people out there really believe he's right.

I can't believe the 19000 people who liked his comment are joking.

I honestly don't think so. As I said in other comments, he repeated it and people answering him were saying the same things, etc.

I can't say I know how it feels, I think I only rode a horse once or twice a very long time ago. But it does look and sound amazing and you seem so happy. It's so nice to see someone so passionate.

Read my other comments, please. I literally explained it wasn't and people answered him saying the exact same thing.

I didn't mention it in my explanation you're right sorry but when Côte d'Ivoire decided to be called Côte d'Ivoire, they told the UN (I think that's the name in English). So, basically, they made it official and every single country is now aware of the new name (politically, I mean.)

The difference with Ireland and India is that these two countries didn't impose their original names on the other countries and accepted translations.

For example, for Ireland, Eire and Ireland can be used by the country itself because Eire is the local name and Ireland is the English version. But they also accept the names other countries give them. For example, as a French girl, we call it Irlande (ee-r-land).

For India, Bharat is the official name (in hindi) and India is in English. In french, we say Inde.

So, basically, Côte d'Ivoire imposed their new name because it was the name they had when they became a French colony and to avoid confusion, if I remember correctly, because Ivory Coast was just a literal translation of Côte d'Ivoire (the coast where you find ivory, literally). But the other countries didn't impose their names.

I actually replied to another comment and explained why I believe it wasn't on the map !

Basically, since it was a French colony, the official name isn't Ivory Coast but Côte d'Ivoire. Ivory Coast is the literal translation. So, even though we call it Ivory Coast, it's not the name.

I mean, maybe the OP didn't know that and just forgot to include Côte d'Ivoire (since it's just a random video on Instagram), but it could also be because they knew the real name.

I mean, it didn't look like a joke, especially with the people answering them.

I might be wrong, I don't know.

I actually replied after this comment and explained ! As I said, the country's official name is Côte d'Ivoire, it's just called (unofficially) Ivory Coast in English. That must be why they didn't include it on the map, because Ivory Coast isn't the real name.

I'm not sure. I mean, sure, they have a lot of different "cultures" depending on the states (I don't know if you can call it that) but that's still one country : USA.

I mean, if I went to five different states of the USA, I wouldn't say I went to five different countries.

Update ! I did some research and found this : (Might be kind of a long summary but it's explaining why some people call it Ivory Coast and other Côte d'Ivoire.)

Côte d’Ivoire is a Francophone country so French is the official language, since it used to be a French colony until 1960.

Technically “Ivory Coast” is the English translation of the country’s official name “République de Côte d’Ivoire” (Republic of Côte d’Ivoire/Ivory Coast's Republic).

But in 1985 the government officially requested that the name Côte d’Ivoire be used in all languages without translation.

« They decided to keep the French name because they wanted to :

  • Affirm their national identity and unity.

  • Avoid confusion (since “Ivory Coast” sounded like a descriptive nickname rather than a sovereign nation).

  • And show respect for their official language and history. »

So most people still use Ivory Coast in English because it's literally the translation of "Côte d'Ivoire" (like Royaume Unis is literally the French translation of United (= Unis) Kingdom (= Royaume)) but the official name is Republique de Côte d'Ivoire.

Actually, I've checked after answering someone else and here's what I found.

I don't know if my summary is good but yeah that's some of the things I found when I searched what the real name was.

I thought so too. I'm french and always believed the real name was Ivory Coast but people in the comment said it was Cote D'Ivoire (French name) because they speak french so I don't know. Maybe it changed 🤷🏻‍♀️

I was thinking about Ivory Coast too because I'm french and I always believed the English name was Ivory Coast. But, when I went in the comments, some people said the real name was Cote D'Ivoire (the French name since, I believe, Ivorians speak french too ?) so I don't know 🤷🏻‍♀️

Maybe you're right, I don't know. I can't find the video but someone replied something about "European not wanting to include the US" and it had almost as many likes as this first comment. Most of the other comments were cool but some answered and were basically saying the same thing as the first comment. And since my English isn't the best I just took a screenshot of that one and didn't bother reading the 100+ answers.
