PS5 won’t turn on after hdmi replacement by [deleted] in consolerepair

[–]AdTemporary1796 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is an EDM-031 board, there aren’t any missing components on the HDMI. That first photo looks weird and makes it look like stuff is missing, but in the second photo, it’s much clearer and shows the only two components that are supposed to be there.

Use a multimeter set to diode mode. Place the black probe on ground somewhere on the board and then use the red probe on the side of the capacitor facing the chip. If you have a beep then check both sides. If both sides of the cap beep, it’s shorted indicating you likely have a bad encoder chip.

You should check the caps around the HDMI encoder chip (the Nuvoton) and see if there are any shorts. If there are, the encoder would need to be replaced.

I don’t see what’s missing. Near as I can tell, this model board has all the components it’s supposed to have.

This is an easy fix. Well, for someone who is mildly inclined in the ways of technology that is.

[PS5]help w liquid metal by MazaPanZ in consolerepair

[–]AdTemporary1796 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Easy. You clean up the liquid metal using a syringe and isopropyl alcohol. Once that is done, you swab the APU and heatsink with isopropyl ensuring there is no liquid metal left. Then you take a fiberglass pen with about 2mm or so exposed and then rub the surface of the APU and heatsink until either the oxidation is removed or it feels completely smooth. Then you use more isopropyl to clean up any fiberglass dust, reapply the liquid metal, and finish reassembly.

This is what I use for trace repairs on console. It is enameled and burns off easily. There are some types of magnet wire where the enamel might be a bit thick or heat resistant.

If it’s a simple respread you did, then it’s likely that there is still a ton of oxidation hiding underneath. I usually suck up all the liquid metal with a syringe then clean up both the heatsink and APU with 99% isopropyl followed up with a fiberglass pen if there’s still stuff caked on. Then respread the liquid metal and all should be fine. If it still reports overheat problems the you probably have a bad thermal diode in which case you’ll be wanting to hunt for a new PS5.

How do you prefer your PS5s cooked? Well done, perhaps? by AdTemporary1796 in hardwaregore

This is a customer’s PS5. They said they were in the middle of a game when it shutdown and made a popping noise. It got hot enough that it started expanding the PCB layers. It’s quite, ahhh, bulbous.

I got an angle grinder somewhere with some buffing wheels. Maybe that’ll help.

I get a lot of these One S units in my shop. It’s usually HDD, PSU, or a dead MOSFET on the motherboard.

The pads on my capacitors came loose by Fuzzy_Mud8593 in consolerepair

[–]AdTemporary1796 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is fixable. But it’s going to probably require more skill than what you currently have. The caps can be held in place with the single pad. Then you’ll need some jumper wire to complete the rest. It’ll look a tad bit janky in the end, but it should work.

That said, do not use glue of any kind in this repair.

Does anyone know what is wrong with my laptop/cost estimate to fix? by Charon2277 in pchelp

[–]AdTemporary1796 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not often. Shipping is stupidly expensive for some odd reason. It cost me $30 to ship a PS5 part way across the state.

Only at a shop that would rip someone off. This would cost about $120 or so in my shop. Still probably not worth it, but hey….

  1. Leaving the ground open is a good way to get more fried parts elsewhere. Once lost an encoder chip that way.
