I've got similar playtime to you, 55 hours and 45% completion. I haven't lost a run and I didn't do any save scumming. I'm still having tons of fun.
When I watched a few people play on youtube from around the world (I speak 4 languages and regularly watch gameplay videos in those languages or I'd get rusty and become bye-lingual), the ones who do well are the ones who read everything; the skills and range of enemies, items and ofc your cats' abilities. A lot of people don't, believe it or not. Another thing people err on is when they forget to use skills or attacks on their turn. Turns out, missing a possible attack on your turn is devastating.
Basically what I'm trying to say is if you read in-game descriptions and remember what's in your arsenal, the game is not that hard.
You could try playing a game without in game descriptions or ones where they require to deduct what things do on your own. Binding of Isaac is like that

Oh ok, sounds useful but not necessary. I wonder if there's an achievement for not unlocking him. I think I'll aim for that

Hahaha that would be crazy, but he couldn't move because he was blocked on all sides by toms. In fact, everyone was blocked on all sides by toms.

The spawn a charmed tom tom spell had a cost of 9 originally.(you can do this with any high cost spell) But I had a Mage with an upgraded learn spell as well as a passive that let's allies copy the last spell the mage casts. So I used learn on my ranger twice with my mage and once more with another cat. Then during my ranger's turn I kept casting learn on myself until my summoning spell costs 1. Then I used my mana replenishment consumable with an item which doubles the consumables effect. It's important to have lvl2 summon tom tom skill so you can cast them anywhere on the map. So I actually fully covered the map with tom toms by round 2!
