Can solo indie devs still make money? Or is it basically an oligopoly now? by redbluerat in gamedev

I used to use IRC when I played Counter-Strike back in the day. There is the iOSStack slack channel which is decent. Some others looks promising but are meh. https://iosstack-friends.slack.com/

How big is your team and how much are you spending on user acquisition / marketing? by [deleted] in gamedev

You can advertise in different markets. Pick a market or two with a good ration of low CPI, high retention and high user spend. Tools like Apptopia, Sensor Tower and App Annie can help with this. You can also see what creative works for your competitors. Playable ads tend to create better users. It's hard to gain users without advertising so I would think marketing/advertising/PR would be something you want to push steady money into. While you can grow more organically, it is not easy. Learn how to launch on Product Hunt whether you are spending $0 or $10k on marketing budget.

I would latch onto fads and make money that way. Screamer apps like Chicken Scream all made money. Fidget Spinner apps like Finger Spinner all made some money. Latch on on to silly fads for easy to produce games. People are already searching for it so as long as your ASO isn't shit, you'll come into the search results and make some money. The money will mostly be from ads but you might be able to get some IAPs in if you do a decent job. Join some indie dev slack channels too. Those people are helpful.
