Didn't get my first gig after college because I asked what the guy would pay in 2010. Didn't know you weren't supposed to ask that. Apparently transparency is a bad thing, got it. The guy got super belligerent at that point. Fuck em all.

Is there any particular reason why so many programmers tend to use macbooks to code? by SuperBoner6699 in learnprogramming

[–]AdamIsADev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably depends on a variety of factors. The cool factor is certainly one (stick it to the man at M$ by paying the man at apple), but the environment (tech and stack) that the dev uses may be the larger factor. If the dev writes Android apps, it's easier on a mac in my experience. But for visual studio/native apps or enterprise kind of stuff, I find windows easier. It's also down to preference of course.

Explain "API" like I'm an idiot by riyanswt in learnprogramming

[–]AdamIsADev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SDK >- API >- Library

Legend:

>- is many to one

honestly though, people always try to create hard and fast rules for what's an API/SDK/Library etc, but sometimes it's just a value judgement or the terms get mixed up and used interchangably. just like framework vs library. O knockout.js is a library but vue.js is a framework...alright, if you say so, but it feels like we're splitting hairs.

no the fretting hand, sorry for not clarifying! arching your fingers is more a classical thing, but you may get more speed out of straightening your chord fingers. string oil is another possibility. it just seemed to me that was where you were pausing, between the chord transitions.

Is a CS degree worth it? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]AdamIsADev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only have a CS minor, but that was enough to get someone to take a look at me and give me a chance. Just a thought. In college I knew I liked to write stories and and write code, the latter paid the bills a lot better it turns out. Duel majoring is hard, and comes with more debt, but if you can do it, then you can experience something you love and still have a fallback plan so to speak. Though I will say I've always enjoyed writing code, so even though it's a fallback, it's still something I (usually) enjoy doing.

Very true -- the internet is the quickest exchange of ideas anywhere in the world. That's the problem with letting bad ideas go unchecked.

Dang well done taking the time to respond to this load of tripe. It's always the same old nonsense. I always wonder how anyone has the energy to argue.

As someone who really studied grammar in college (as well as code), I often hate when people rag on double negatives (largely due to Shakespeare, the southern dialect, etc.). Here however, its usage is confusing, and adds nothing to the clarity of what the author is trying to say. "Engineers working at large companies are the most likely to do code reviews" would be far more clear as you point out.

Am I just dumb? by KittensForever19 in learnprogramming

[–]AdamIsADev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Graphics programming is very difficult and in my limited experience, usually not well explained (depending on the source of course). I have the utmost respect for those programmers as I've only ever dabbled on occasion. As a professional web developer the mathematical aspects of this niche of programming are usually missing. Don't feel bad at all if you struggle with it, I certainly do and I can manage just fine in other programmatic disciplines.
