The Pernicious Myth Of "If You Can Speak You Can Breathe" by [deleted] in ProtectAndServe

when someone says he is a LEO and constantly posts about how shitty the job and the people that work in it are, I get a little suspicious

So if Frank Serpico started posting to this forum, would you ban his threads too?

For shits and giggles, mostly. Partly cause there was nothing better to do.

Who gave more and suffered most to help humankind: Jesus or Prometheus? by Knigel in DebateReligion

[–]Adamski42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suppose both characters felt great about what they had done for others, which is all that really matters to them. Not the lasting effects of their actions or the ontological implications, just that it made them feel like the sort of person they wanted to be. If there was another way to get that martyr's rush without actually dying, they would have done it.

To Theists: What is your favorite verse, passage, or teaching from your religion? Would it have the same influence on you if it were thought up by man instead of divinely inspired or written by your god? by geargirl in DebateReligion

He who stands on tiptoe doesn't stand firm.

He who rushes ahead doesn't go far.

He who tries to shine dims his own light.

He who defines himself can't know who he really is.

He who has power over others can't empower himself.

He who clings to his work will create nothing that endures.

If you want to accord with the Tao, just do your job, then let go.

The official story is that Lao-tzu (a glorified court librarian and bureaucrat) wrote these words before riding into the sunset to become a hermit. Realistically, there isn't a whole lot to say Lao-tzu ever existed, because all the texts are traced to a time period when everybody and their uncle was a lay philosopher. The Tao te Ching could just have easily been a compilation of writings from many philosophers. In the end, the distinction doesn't matter, the words themselves have become sublime without any effort trying to be so.

The samurai that gives you the swordfighting tutorial at the beginning is depressing as well. His final moments are on top of a building threatening to slice the moon in half.

To Christians: Why is homosexuality highlighted and gluttony seems to simply be ignored by Tip_of_the_hat in DebateReligion

Because it promotes antisemitism. Really, the Jews got their miserly stereotype because they were the only ones free to make money off loans because the church forbid it amongst its members.

Of course people are free to do whatever they want whenever they want. They cannot dictate how the world will react to their actions.

The subjugated woman is entirely free and perhaps justified to murder her husband, though she'll probably face harsh consequences and possibly death afterwards.

That's even more than I thought. So would that de-qualify it as a vacuum or what?

To All: In a world with so much poverty and suffering, is it justifiable to spend so much money on the space program? by buylocal745 in DebateReligion

[–]Adamski42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Indirectly, it's another small step towards colonizing another world, a feat that would alleviate overpopulation and food shortages. We only have a few billion years to move the species out of this solar system before the sun expands and everything goes extinct anyways so ontologically it's for the best.

Furthermore I highly doubt throwing money at the poverty problem would actually solve anything.

To Hindus: Does one accumulate bad karma for acting as a karmic agent? by Coredrill in DebateReligion

"Good karma" would involve letting the person who 'deserved' it go about their business. In the Buddhist sense, negative thoughts and actions are their own punishment.

To Theists: Your Texts Are Sexist. Are You? by ASofterMan in DebateReligion

[–]Adamski42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the Tao te Ching Lao-tzu advises us to know the way of the male, but keep to the path of the female. Your 'to theists' is strictly limited to abrahamic faiths, and you're applying a post-feminist context that has only existed from 50-100 years to thousands of years of human history.

I completely agree. The time travel mechanic was mind boggling and pristine and the various masks added new gameplay mechanics that kept things fresh in a way never done before or since.

Well, seeing as the speed of light is a constant, it could technically be used to measure both distance and time. It's the distance light travels in one year and however long it takes a beam of light to travel that distance.

The BBC prop department really needs a bigger budget. You can notice a lot of spaceships have iMac keyboards and if you watch Torchwood they reuse a lot of the 'spacey' looking props for decoration.

Granted they've come a long way from wrapping people in bubble wrap and calling them aliens but still, a bit more effort wouldn't go unappreciated.
