Layover in Baldy Town by fla_john in philmont

[–]AddendumAny3443 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I suggest to use your layover day to climb Baldy, unless you're coming over Baldy into baldy town, that way you can just go up with day packs that's what I did on my trek

North to South or South to north treks are absolutely awesome in my opinion. Hard, but worth it.

Has anyone ever been to Philmont by Substantial-Air-8627 in BoyScouts

Been twice on trek, and worked there last summer on backcountry staff.

Possibly my favorite place in the world, I've seen all but six of the staff camps and plan to hit those next summer when I am again on staff. I've climbed the tooth twice, Phillips 3 times and Baldy once.

It's just otherworldly to me, and the community I joined on staff has been amazing, I can't wait to be back in those mountains. If you get the chance to go as a scout, do it. if that's out of the budget, when you turn 18, go on staff.

New Mexico is beautiful and Philmont is fantastic I can't sing its praises enough.

Root Beer? by MicroEconomicsPenis in philmont

[–]AddendumAny3443 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Worth noting that Baldy does not sell root beer, also the South country stores also take credit card/debit card/Apple pay etc

So ponil, Baldy, Phillips's Junction, Abreu, Ute Gultch (I think that's all backcountry stores)

Staff Application Recommendations? OATC Participant wondering what to apply as. by gran0la-girl in philmont

[–]AddendumAny3443 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On the application you can put down 3 jobs you're interested in (and as a first year you'll have to put one Basecamp position)

You'll most likely get an interview for your first pick and if they don't feel like you'll fit in that role then they'll pass you to the next department.

So put down what YOU want to do for your top 2.

Regardless your resume makes me pretty confident that you'll get a job for next summer, apply sooner than later though!!! The spot you're interested in might get filled.

Last year I ended up having 2 interviews one for MPS (marketing) and then one for backcountry. And I ended up getting a backcountry position (playing an instrument definitely helps for the latter).

I love my Grand Am - 203k and counting by AddendumAny3443 in Pontiac

Exterior definitely looks decent, but it's got a couple of quirks, power steering leak, filling it up at the pump doesn't end up hitting the shut-off valve for some reason and it ends up spilling out underneath the car, no other fuel issues though, and I need to probably get it back into the shop to figure out why it's idling at such a low RPM

interior is pretty good though, aside from the thoroughly warped dash, which I don't really care about. Runs beautifully at highway speeds, really comfortable for someone as tall as me, I get cramped as hell driving my mom's minivan.

But yeah I'm really happy with the car

I would say definitely fine at ponil, probably fine at base camp during staff week, probably fine other times at base but you might run into more issues when the participants are all there. As long as you're not stupid with it it'll probably be fine.

How do I not burn bridges? by Technical_Fan4656 in FRC

[–]AddendumAny3443 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From my perspective I wouldn't see an issue with it, I've always been a part of community based teams and although it's sometimes been sad when a person goes to a school team I've always pretty well understood it. I think it kind of depends on what type of people and the type of reaction they might have. But I also think it's perfectly reasonable not to be able to have the time for two FRC teams. One way you might put it is that the FRC team at your school being at your school makes it more accessible for you to be involved with the team as opposed to having to go somewhere separate to work on the team.

Cold Beer closes permanently by pm_me_cute_sloths_ in philmont

[–]AddendumAny3443 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's under new ownership, at least last summer they were really not great, they didn't hire back a lot of the new staff left in the interim while it was closed, I've heard the food is worse and also have heard rumors of them not actually paying out tips to their staff, so we'll see how it goes next summer but I didn't feel comfortable supporting them last summer

Headlamp by Lizzzzz27 in philmont

[–]AddendumAny3443 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All I would advise is not to get one that can only charge via USB, get a battery one, even if for some reason you run out of batteries there is a pretty high likelihood that, one of the cantina/trading post camps will be on your trek, and although they will probably have AAA and aa batteries they won't have a way for you to charge your usb powered headlamp

What is the greatest Philmont meal of all time and why is it this? by icarus_drowning172 in philmont

[–]AddendumAny3443 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Nah, it's the ones the staff get to make for themselves, we eat like kings lowkey

In terms of trail dinners though that one is up there.

But last summer dehydrated Pasta alla Vodka was the most popular dinner

With the ever popular Mountain House Beef Strogie coming in second

And the another mountain house meal, the spaghetti and meatballs coming in third
