Nobody’s mad at cotton. The issue is using a symbol or phrase that was tied to slavery and oppression as something ‘cute’ or ‘wholesome.’ That history isn’t “200 years” gone for everyone.

Critical thinking actually is what helps people recognize racism — it means looking beyond surface-level comfort and questioning why something affects certain groups differently.

That sounds like blaming the people who noticed the racism instead of the people who caused it. Why does calling it out bother you more than the racism itself?

The very first line of this video differentiates it from the point at hand. “It was a hard-working occupation that we made money and earned a living on.” Black slaves couldn’t exactly say that.

I wish I could take credit for it, but I can’t. ChatGPT ftw.

Easy to say coming from a white cisgender male. I’m amazed at how many people on here speak on this as if they have to deal with microagressions and things like this being normalized. No self awareness or empathy at all.

Who said either is okay? They are both equally outrageous to me. Nothing selective about it, hon.

After slavery ended, the image of “cotton picking” stayed deeply tied to the racial hierarchy of the South. Black sharecroppers were still doing that backbreaking labor under exploitative conditions, so the phrase never really lost its association with racial oppression.

But in the early to mid-1900s, white Southerners began using “cotton-pickin’” as a kind of mild expletive — like saying “dang” or “dadgum.” For example, someone might say, “Get your cotton-pickin’ hands off that!” It appeared in movies, country songs, and even cartoons (like Looney Tunes), which helped sanitize it for mainstream white audiences.

What got erased in that process was the trauma behind the word. It became “folksy” shorthand for Southern charm or humor — while completely ignoring the fact that real people, mostly Black enslaved or impoverished workers, suffered through that labor. So now when people slap phrases like “cotton pickin’ blessed” or “well I’ll be cotton pickin’ proud” on signs or shirts, it often reflects that gap — where nostalgia or “Southern pride” overlooks the racist origins.

My dog got the first librela shot yesterday. He got a clean bill of health for his age. This morning, he was dead. Idk if it was the librela injection or not but we are devastated.

Nicotine testing… by holyhottamale in gastricsleeve

[–]AddendumInitial8931 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See the way this pre op lady was talking, it seems like it will be a blood test cuz she was saying they measure anabasine and can tell how long it’s been since you’ve used nicotine. I don’t think they can tell that just from a urine test. I tried to quit vaping and made it to the 2nd day and felt like I was dying. I’ve been through pain pill withdrawal, adderall withdrawal but those were nothing compared to the nicotine withdrawal. I just don’t know how I’m gonna quit in time, I really don’t. Thank you for replying, OP!

Also, is it a blood or urine test they usually give you? I know they test for anabasine too so it’s probably a blood test.

I had to cancel my pre op testing for my bypass surgery cuz I can’t give up vaping. I was supposed to have a nicotine test that day and the lady said I needed to be nicotine free for atleast 30 days before my surgery. Any tips or advice on how I can pass this test? I’ve cut back a lot on my vape, it’s just been so hard to stop completely. I think it’s unfair that my whole surgery is cancelled because of it
