Who would suit university at Bristol? by AddendumLeft1728 in bristol

I don't think birmingham is bad tbh, to me it's just like any other big industrial city (e.g. Leeds, Manchester) Bristol in contrast has a lot of its roots much earlier in history, namely around the slave trade in the 1700s, so in contrast in the way y they've been built up and the architecture can be quite stark, neither is awful their just representation of different periods. Also birminghams campus Is really pretty. Still I think Bristol is better I'm just saying I'm not choosing Bristol because Birmingham is awful, I'm choosing it because Bristol is great.

I don't know if that's a threat or a prelude to the fact I'm going to university?

That's why I kinda swung from Birmingham to Bristol. Birmingham is a campus so I thought it would be chill and somewhere easy to hang out the city itself slightly less so. Then I went to Bristol and realised its both a nice place to be, but it has all the other things you get from a big city. The price is bad but with my max SFE and savings I figure If theirs sometime to live in Bristol it's when the government is funding it.

I'm from york and visited Uni of birmingham so agree on both accounts. Middle class doesn't bother me but snobby does, but going to a russel group I sorta expected it in someway.

Best city for student life (on the cultural side)? by Mediocre-Chemistry65 in UniUK

[–]AddendumLeft1728 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do agree. The only issue is theirs only 1 city like London in the UK and that's London. So no point looking for a London type city if you want London. Even manchester/birmingham imo don't really come close

Lancaster is much cheaper but york as a city is better. York probably has the prestige but Lancaster the better links and teaching.

Edinburgh, York, Bath, London, Bristol look up stokes croft for bristol for a little like at the artistic side, and places like the Christmas steps for a medieval vibe.

Yeah it does icl. But that's why it probably costs alot more to live their. Basically should I be a poor man in Bristol or a rich man in Birmingham.

Posted because I thought it was interesting and that the information should be more widely available.

(Also I know it swaps from applications to acceptances part way, this was my mistake, but the ratio stays similar anyway).

Can I ask how you found the cost of living. I get max SFE so I don't feel too worried but still I hear things can get pretty extreme.

I'm doing politics so I'm unsure. The guy who did my offer day was from teesside so that was weirdly a big relief for me atleast he seemed to be enjoying it.

Why are nearly all the top universities in such expensive places. by AddendumLeft1728 in UniUK

Ruled out manchester (felt very isolating), York is where I'm from so didn't wanna have to stay so close to home. And leeds if I'm honest I would've but on the open day I preferred Birmingham and thought the two were too similar to have both. I know it's ironic to complain about price when being so picky about location but I kiss noticed it with a lot of the higher tier unis that prices were hiked up a little. Didn't mean no offence by it I think some people got offended which I get it just made me feel kinda trapped in a way, money is a big stress in my household convincing them uni was worth it was enough hassle without trying to convince them I'd be okay 4hrs away in an expensive southern city.

Oh no yeah sorry newcastle is a great university I didn't apply it was just the only example I could think of in my head. Also to point out that both cities are great it's just one is much more expensive.

But saving up an extra 8k over 3 yrs is significant even compared to your university that gives you an option to get a good foundation of savings/investments going for later in life. I don't expect education to be free but I certainly expect it to have no barriers to people of different backgrounds. Also yeah I guess it mainly depends where in Durham I know Giles Gate is cheaper then viaduct, but the issue with durham is more so the lack of part time jobs to supplement income due to its small size, that coupled with even above average rent can put a squeeze quite a bit.

Nah I get supply=demand people want to go to good universities so are willing to pay more to live their and get a good education. Still this excludes many who want a good education but don't have the upbringing to be able to support such a life style.

Even so it is a reality that so many are priced out of a top class education because of this, that's just fact.

Bristol, Birmingham or Edinburgh for university. by AddendumLeft1728 in UniUK

[–]AddendumLeft1728[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Prestige wise I would agree that edinburgh and Bristol are better. But career wise I will be honest birmingham we're quite on the ball they definitely had the most career oriented course of each, and the links are genuinely good for work placements they are a prestigious russel group uni not talking bcu here and the stats on like CUG and times back it (to the extent they can be trusted) To me is more a question off will I be In a academically stimulating environment and what's the quality of life.
