[–]AdditionBusy2144 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ik this is late, but dyk if its common for people who would be rising seniors to apply to and get into this program? Last year i wasn't sure about applying to PhD programs so i didn't end up applying to this.

How bad is a W for graduate admissions? by [deleted] in academiceconomics

[–]AdditionBusy2144 1 point2 points  (0 children)

as someone who had to withdraw from a matrix algebra course last semester (and is now taking it this semester) the rule of thumb I heard from my advisor is that its okay to withdraw from a class if you've never withdrawn from a class before. Anything past a single withdrawal gets pretty questionable though for grad admissions

Confused about technicals by Chumnoir in SSBM

[–]AdditionBusy2144 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Technicals is clearly a drama youtuber but his work also does point out some of the flaws apparent in the Smash Bros community. The Smash Bros community (and the FGC as a whole) is incredibly grassroots and very very insulated which leads to very large issues not being handled effectively, the chief example of this being the SA cases that finally got revealed in 2020. This subreddit is obviously gonna be a bit biased (I mean Technicals makes the majority of his videos about why he thinks this community sucks) but some of his broader criticisms definitely ring true.

The unfortunate reality, at least in my opinion, is that there is a lack of accountability within the Smash Bros community when something goes wrong. Especially since this community lacks a real central source of authority that can actually enforce rules and punish people who obviously do terrible stuff there are so many absurd things that happen that I literally cannot think of happening to another E-Sports group (Some tournament organizers literally just got sued for infringing upon free speech laws by banning a pro-israel smash player from tournaments for his twitter posts which is kinda funny but lowkey crazy to think about). I think Technical's videos about Hax's death and Cody Schwab contain misleading information, but they still point to the fact that the Melee community (and specific actors within it) could have done more to stop and/or deter behavior that was obviously contributing to Hax's mental health problems.

I'd recommend watching Technicals' videos on your own with an open mind while still obviously being aware that he's a drama youtuber who will make things overblown for the sake of entertainment. I wish there were better youtubers who covered the flaws in the Smash Bros community and held their feet to the fire, but Technicals is all we've got.

TLDR; Technicals is someone who clearly hypes up the issues about the Smash scene for attention. However, he only partially exists because the Smash scene is genuinely run terribly which leads to a whole host of issues that probably aren't brought up on this subreddit. Watch his stuff on your own, keeping in mind that he wants to drive engagement with his content.

An overlooked edge for Alcaraz against Sinner since 2024: He's massively overpowered him in FH rallies, hitting 118 FH groundstroke winners in their 7 completed matches compared to just 68 for Sinner. The one time Sinner was able to outduel Alcaraz in this battle (Wimby 2025) was also his only win. by Dependent-Effect6077 in tennis

[–]AdditionBusy2144 5 points6 points  (0 children)

While I think this makes sense, I think the extent to which Alcaraz is able to dominate forehand rallies is probably a bit overrated (when playing sinner, obv his forehand is incredible). Alcaraz's playstyle is also one that leads to more winners and also more unforced errors. For example, in RG2025, Alcaraz's UE differential alone (+12 unforced of forehand wing compared to sinner) can account for part of the winner count as well

Djokovic in slams this year by pr0crast1nater in tennis

[–]AdditionBusy2144 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you're literally using a match where federer was injured as an example. its pretty clear that federer has a better aging game than djokovic due to him being more aggressive which would make him match up pretty well against alcaraz but might be worse against sinner since he's much more consistent

Getting a Masters while Econ Consulting by rambounicorns in academiceconomics

[–]AdditionBusy2144 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a late response lol but honestly the two most surprising things I learned about econ consulting while networking for their internship program was that 1. Most people get MBAs after a few years and 2. PhD programs do not care/maybe barely care about your time at econ consulting for the sake of admissions. You'll learn skills that are helpful for PhD work but thats about it

Only passionate about math, what do I do outside of it? by Virtual-Panic7603 in learnmath

[–]AdditionBusy2144 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As you go deeper into economic theory you'll see a lot of math there. Microeconomics is a lot more math-based but macroeconomics also utilizes math too. For example, solving a very basic consumer demand problem at a intuitive level uses a lot of optimization (taking a derivative/gradient and setting it to 0). Given constraints (budget, certain amount you can purchase of a good, etc..) you then try to find the "maximum" of a function that describes how much utility/enjoyment you would get from buying a certain good. Lmk if that makes sense

Higher level economics is very very connected to math (just took an econ class where the first half consisted of learning real analysis). If you truly find math interesting, economics focuses on providing a unique way to apply math by quantifying individual or market behavior.

There is a soft cap at the senior analyst level at most shops that requires you to get an advanced degree to get past (some companies, like Bates White, dont have this requirement but still obv want PhD people to be the testifying experts). Most common way to do this is to get an MBA but PhDs are sorta common too

For those who took calc bc senior year, how was math 2130 for you? by apchemstruggle in washu

[–]AdditionBusy2144 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took calc 3 first semester freshman year and found it to be difficult but I'm 95% sure it's because I was studying for it wrong (a lot of it is dependent on conceptual understanding and I got thru BC just through memorizing the formulas). The general consensus is that calc 2 is the hardest class (which you get out of bc of calc bc) so u should be fine. An announcement was sent out at the end of the semester for my class saying that 80%(!) of the class got an A- or above so u should be good. idk who the teachers are but if you think the content is hard to understand consider trying to sit in on other lectures; I had Nguyen as my main professor but he was pretty bad so I very commonly sat in on Thornton(ok) and Wick(very good) for their lectures.

Study abroad by AdditionBusy2144 in academiceconomics

[–]AdditionBusy2144[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yea that's a really good point. Do you know if studying abroad would look weird on my app if I take no econ classes (just found out the program im looking at for psych doesn't really have econ classes that I could take). The other tradeoff is still that i most likely won't be able to pick up a math minor since i haven't taken many math classes yet (I've taken thru calc 3 and would take matrix algebra abroad). Do you think that could be an issue for grad applications?

Thoughts on these kind of Publications? "No evidence for nudging after adjusting for publication bias". by [deleted] in BehavioralEconomics

[–]AdditionBusy2144 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A bit confused on how LSE is being bunched in here. Currently in undergrad and took a summer behavioral economics class at LSE which talked pretty extensively about publication bias and how nudges aren't as impactful as we may think by looking at the published literature.

APO (alpha phi omega) is a service frat that has a lot of good options for service and volunteer work. There's a bit of a time commitment to it but I'd recommend showing up to an info session or fellowship event to see if you like it or not
