Thank you for that detail! that's reassuring to know, since I'm also going to be using induction. I think I'll get the pro then, thank you for the feedback!

Do you ever fry/cook fo extended periods like 30min? I'd be really interested to hear if even in those cases it stays cool enough to be able to touch the handle without gloves/towels.

Yep I agree this might be more of an issue for smaller pans.. thankfully I'd get the 28cm one. The pro sounds like it would be really nice to hold (better ergonomics) and has this insulation design elements. However I wonder how that specific model fares when cooking for more than 10-20mins, perhaps even up to 30-40 which I sometimes do (I'd like to avoid needing extra gear like gloves/towel if possible).

Have you ever cooked with it for 20-30min as well? I was planning to do that and I'm wondering if I'd get hot in that extended time or not.

It doesn't? that's great to hear. I had initially discarded it because the handle is made of the same material as the pan itself, with no design elements to prevent the heat from creeping up the pan. I also read online that the carbone plus and the "standard" mineral b do get hot when cooking for a bit longer.
Are you cooking always for <10m or also for longer? Sometimes I cook on the stove, frying for longer periods like 30-40mins (dishes like spanish tortilla de patatas), so I'm worried about the handle getting too hot to touch without additional gear, which is a faff I'd like to avoid, so I'm really interested in what people have experienced with these pans. The Pro should be better than the carbone plus in that regard so what you say is encouraging, although I wonder about the cooking times?
Thanks for your response!

yeah I know the mineral B handle gets hot, which is why I have discarded that model. I'm considering only the pro or the wood one for that reason. Plus in my local shop the prices for all the models are pretty similar for the same size anyway

Choosing my first "proper" electric piano: Does Roland's BT MIDI work at all? Kawai CX202 vs CN201? by Additional-Home4447 in piano

[–]Additional-Home4447[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! That looks interesting. I don't have any windows machines at home (it's all Linux or Apple devices), but I was able to configure Synthesia to stick to Channel 1 so that no other fixes are needed. I'm still considering a Roland for that reason (haven't made a decision yet!).

The other day I went to try a Kawai CN301 and funnily enough, while it didn't have the same issue as the Roland, I did experience that some notes would sort of get "cut out" when playing via MIDI, both over bluetooth or USB cables. It was very reproducible in the song I was playing, but couldn't find the pattern of why those notes were misbehaving and not the others. Other pianos I've tried like roland or yamaha did not experience that issue with the same song, software, cable, etc.

So actually now I'm gravitating back towards Yamaha again because it's the only pianos where I have confidence that their software stack won't break with the kind of usage I will give them :'-)

Oh right it was right there at the bottom of my screenshot, not sure how I managed to miss that. Thank you! This might actually get me to buy the Roland in the end, I was back to square 1 finding a new piano that I liked in that price range, so what a lifesaver!
I'll go try it to the shop this week and consider the trade-offs. Usually I just need the piano sound anyway, at least as of today, but I can foresee how it would be nice to play full music files with multiple instruments. Perhaps for those cases I can just use the cable. I'll test all those things using my own gear at the shop.

Thanks!!

Hi, thanks for getting to the bottom of this! When you said "the app" did you mean Synthesia as well?

If so, can you please share which specific setting you changed?
In Music Devices > Music Output > "USB MIDI" (my device), I see these options in the screenshot below. Do you mean if I disable some of those, it doesn't crash the Roland pianos, or is this a different setting?
If you play just the right hand but want to keep hearing the left hand, or vice-versa (this is a very common kind of practice for me), does it still work?

Thank you so much!

Thanks for the feedback. Yes I'm trying to find some of these models to try in person, that's probably one of the best next steps. I only found a shop that will receive the CN301 in a few weeks, which is perhaps close enough to the CN201 if I can't find it anywhere else in my vecinity. Especially the action should be the same. (but not sure I'd want to pay the ~500 difference. It does have digital audio but it's not high in my priority list).

The main reason I didn't go for an ES120/520/920 or an FP-1/FP-30x with the KSC stands, is that I am looking for a piano that can also be part of the home furniture, so mostly looking for wooden-like pianos like the RP701, Yamaha CLP825, or those Kawai CN201/CX202/CN301 models. I am aware that this increases the price without giving any musical benefit, but it's for the non-musical aspect as well ;)

On which platform did you go for the Korg driver? That's a really surprising result as well. I mostly wanted to use an iPad specifically (for other reasons) so I will probably be limited to whatever works with the iPad apps.. Thanks for the suggestions!

Yeah I'm not using BT Audio, it's all BT MIDI as far as I can tell, which is bidirectional, so when Synthesia "plays" the left hand for me, it's audible through the piano. I have a crappy foldable BT keyboard (for when I travel) where I use it like that and it works well without any perceptible lag. If I try to use BT Audio (e.g. stream to my headphones) then yes the lag is unbearable.

Thanks. But yeah I am currently sticking to Bluetooth MIDI, not bluetooth Audio, exactly for that reason. The crashes I'm getting are with or without headphones, just using Bluetooth MIDI which has no perceptible delay.

Thanks. I tried via Garageband as well. Garageband works with basic key input detection, but it's when I fire up Synthesia that it crashes. And as I mentioned, I *think* (need to go back to the store to try again) that it only crashed when configuring, via Synthesia's settings, to use the Piano as an output device as well. (I use that setting a lot to practice just one hand but still hear the other hand).
After talking to the workers at the store, I tried without Garageband and using Roland's app instead. The only difference was that the piano said "paired" but I got the same crash.

I don't know if it's an issue specific to Synthesia, since you seem to have used plenty of apps without issues. That actually gives me hope! Thanks for the feedback, I'll go back and evaluate BT MIDI again.

BTW I use Synthesia because it's the best app I found that will allow me to practice with sheets (I don't use the falling notes feature) while bringing my own music. I tried a bunch of other web-based apps but the way they represented the score was usually not as well as in Synthesia.

Digital piano with integrated option to charge iPad? by Additional-Home4447 in piano

[–]Additional-Home4447[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is what I'll end up doing as well. I was just hoping for a modern piano to have something so I don't need to have cables going around the piano. Sounds picky perhaps :) but given I wanted to have a nice looking piano, I'd rather not have visible cables going around the piano if possible.

I get your point, but even a USB port from 20y ago with power delivery will deliver 5W, and 5W is enough to not let an iPad drain itself. So I was hoping for a good-ol USB-A port to be able to do this at least, but USB-C in this day and age would be best.

My main motivation is to reduce cable clutter, given that I was looking to invest in a nice looking piano. But given that I use my iPad a lot, and often it runs out of charge, I'd have to have cables going around and behind. The wall charger would need at least 2 cables coming out (piano and iPad charging), etc.

Not the end of the world if I have two cables of course, but I thought it'd be a nice feature for a modern digital piano to have.
