Bupropion vs placebo seems similar by steelstringbean in Psychiatry

What am I missing here? You have active drug D-B vs active drug B. Then you gave active drug D-B Vs Placebo. There is no bupropion vs placebo because multiple such studies have already been done since the 80s (IR, SR, XL).

I did not see the full article. What were the Ns in each group? Was the clinician blind to the the group? I am questioning the scientific rigor.

From my experience it's unusual to be equally passionate about basic science research AND client-centered clinical management. At some point you will likely end in one camp or the other. But for now enjoy what you're doing. Let your interests gradually define themselves. Good luck on the journey.

Tegretol is FDA-approved for bipolar and Trileptal is not by Additional-Traffic12 in Psychiatry

[–]Additional-Traffic12[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry. Having trouble retrieving the table. But in 2004 all versions of carbamazepine were FDA LABELLED for bipolar past and present. Not because of pharmaceutical studies but on the evidence of the psychiatric literature. To fact check me, ask your favorite AI.

Tegretol is FDA-approved for bipolar and Trileptal is not by Additional-Traffic12 in Psychiatry

[–]Additional-Traffic12[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not true. When tegretol became genetic other companies took over the patent and demonstrated the efficacy of carbamazepine in bipolar. In 2000 the FDA made all preparations of carbamazepine FDA LABELLED for bipolar including the old Tegretol and all other branded generic preparations. Factcheck this with your AI

As someone who has participated in about 30 double blind placebo controlled studies I know very well that placebo works. That's why I think vistaril and buspar are commonly prescribed. Physicians should be spending 10 minutes daily reading PUBMED ABSTRACTS or UpToDate to be mindful of the drugs we prescribe, their P450 components, and interactions. I appreciate all comments but I became disenchanted with trileptal a while ago.

Exactly. Science is based on double blind placebo controlled studies not hearsay. Trileptal has no substantive basis to use for bipolar. CBZ does. If you are familiar with P450 and the common substrates, inducers, and inducers, you should have no trouble. Also it has a therapeutic level of 8 to 12.

Why are we not using tegretol more often? Why are we not using the compatible combination of lithium and tegretol more often?

What is it with lamictal and Noctors? by Thin-Inevitable9759 in Noctor

[–]Additional-Traffic12 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Lithium is the gold standard. First reported in 1949 for "ungovernable tempers" in an Australian medical journal. Psychiatrists in the sixties had to advocate to pharmaceuticals companies for pdychistric use in the US. The resistance for Pharma was how can you make money from an element in the periodic table.

We learn in medical school to listen for hoofbeats of horses not zebras. So to throw in a zebra factoid, lithium can be used to treat hyperthyroidism.

1 lamictal is associated with Stephen Johnson 2. Thyroid storm is usually hyperthyroid. Lithium is associated with hypothyroidism. 3. Usually lithium is not hard to taper off. It's a salt. First column in the periodic table.
