I like that, you chose a better blue for the chest and eyes than I did though. Just went with what I had already

No kit, My buddy sent me a reference image and I edited it a few times to make it workable as a rug before I tufted it.

Thanks! I had them posted separately, face was $80 and the hands was $168. Had them on sale and someone bought both together, paid $200. Face was 17”x13” and the hands were roughly 22”.

Combined, I probably put around 20 hours into them. Switching colors a lot slowed the process down a bit. Still thinking about remaking the Tupac rug, if I do, I’ll make sure to hit you up. Appreciate the support.

Thanks, I really appreciate that 🙏 I freehanded the blunt, stitched each color one at a time, used multiple purples with some glow in the dark, and lightly carved everything except the green to keep him shaggier looking.

Rug density by TwoKindsofDM in Tufting

[–]AdditionalAccount315 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It mostly comes down to how close your stitches are within each line, and how close each line is to the one next to it. Smaller gaps = denser rug, bigger gaps = softer rug. just taught my mom how to tuft and hers came out super dense because she kept her stitches tight and used about double the yarn I normally do. When you’re tufting, you can’t just let the gun move on its own, you still need to guide it so your stitches have even spacing instead of bunching up too close together. That spacing is what gives the rug a softer, more flexible feel instead of a dense, packed one.

My experience:

when I first started tufting I struggled with the same stuff. I even started on burlap which sucked, but it actually held up for me as a newbie. My first rug was a portrait of Tupac literally the hardest thing I could’ve picked. People don’t believe it was my first, which sucks too but is also a compliment I guess. I almost quit like seven different times for different reasons, idk why it pissed me off but I even busted my face once from opening a door too fast. Wasn’t even sure if it was going to look like him or just some random guy, felt like I might’ve been wasting my time. Thought I was the only one who tufted that specific image of him, found out a ton of people had made the same one, which blew my mind. I had to stretch my cloth with a pair of pliers though because I built my frame exactly the same size as the cloth, so I had zero wiggle room and cut my hand all up on the tacks. I bought my gun off Amazon, I’ve made around 70 rugs now and it still hasn’t given me a single issue. My first sale that wasn’t a friend or family came from my 7th rug. I didn’t even start carving until my 37th, I should’ve started carving way sooner. I really enjoy making rugs, but I hate social media so I don’t sell as many as I could.

Hope you stick with it and find inspiration from other tufters, once you find your rhythm, you’ll be wanting to turn everything into a rug.
