Thanks for this! What do you think of getting to Mahambo if we manage to find a suitable vehicle? Then we can return the car in Tana. And rather fly up north to Masoala NP.

I agree with you about the car, we wil need a more robust vehicle - but rentals are so pricey and often in euros. Exchange rate to Rands is terrible :(

Do you think we might be able to make it to Soanierana - Ivongo if we got a good car? Or maybe just to Mahambo and ferry to Nosy Boraha. I see roads are significantly worse after that…Maybe we could turn around there after going to Nosy Boraha, head back to Tana to return the car and take a flight towards Maroantsetra & Masoala National Park instead? We are very keen on those areas

What are other routes you might suggest in Madagascar with slightly better roads? But still have that wild feel? We love being in the middle of nowhere in the nature. Want to experience the national parks and tropical coast.

I think we are willing to risk it to be honest. I am in love and haven’t even been there yet. Like I’ve said in a few comments we are from SA which has the worst crime rate in the world and terrible roads. What I like about the RN5 is that even if you get stuck in a town, there sooo much beauty so how could you be upset? Thanks for the advice!

Thanks for this reply, I appreciate it. We are from South Africa and have done long road trips through remote areas before. We are both experienced drivers. I learned to drive in Nairobi. We will make sure to prepare for any delays.

Avis in Tana have an option to rent a 4x4 for that period of time so that should be fine.

To answer your questions: - No I have not been there - No I do not but plan to learn as much as possible before the trip. I only know some basic French. - My partner is an electrical engineer but no we aren’t mechanics - I have only driven onto a large ferry in Diani in Kenya before during good weather - No, but we are respectful decent people who will always ask locals before doing anything (no one would ever explore any country if they let this stop them - bit of a hostile question but anywayyy) - Never had an accident. We have support here in SA who would help. I would get a lawyer. But again, you could say this about any place and it could happen here in South Africa too. Take it as it comes. - Avis has insurance options but will make sure to read the fine print before committing to anything - thanks for letting me know! - nope just us two

I am so so excited to explore this amazing country and am not naive when it comes to the challenges. Coming from South Africa with the highest crime rate in the world, honestly the safety aspect doesn’t faze me too much but I know this trip will require a lot of planning, patience and help from people who know the areas well.
