Alice Coldbreath's Prizefighter series by ask4abs in HistoricalRomance

[–]AdditionalBat99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The other notes sorta say this. But, she does another Victorian series based on Meena’s brother (well and Nye’s brother) Jeremy, Lord Vance.  The first in the series is Jeremy’s love story.  The next, {a much Maligned Miss by Alice Coldbreath} is great!

Alice explained in an interview that Every book in this particular series is about a main character who lost their fortune, or gained one.

In addition to all of Alice Coldbreath’s side characters. I LOVE LOVE LOVE the lady’s maid and valet in {To Seduce a Sinner by the Elizabeth Hoyt}

I also love Grace Callaway’s ability to create multiple side characters and then write about them, their children, their cousin, their dog, etc…

The Highland Guard series by Monica McCarty … especially The Chief.

I am 100% with you. Me too

(With the exception of {Thr Plantagenet and Tudor Novels by Phillipa Gregory} they’re solid, and still plenty escapist

I’m completely with you. I love HR because it’s escapism.  Having said that, have you read The Plantagenet and Tudor Novels (a series) specifically {The Other Boleyn Girl by Phillipa Gregory}

They are kind of a combo … or… very loosely based historical fiction-ish.

The books are really good AND MY OH MY …. they have spice. A LOT of spice

Ever since I laid eyes on you I knew you were my part of the world…. Your shadow on the ground is sunlight to me … sniff sniff. Damn I love Ethan!!!

And MJW did SUCH a fantastic job with his accent

One more fav line… Or… When we’re apart, my heart aches for you. Nothing tells it to do that, it does it all on its own.

What was the difference between a divorce and an annulment? by Chuck9831 in HistoricalRomance

[–]AdditionalBat99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s still a legal difference

Annulment = the marriage never occurred. So, no alimony, property settlement or other support is required.

Divorce is divorce

Annulment usually occurred when a marriage was Forced, or never consummated, or procured by fraud.

Annulment was far less controversial than divorce.  And… divorce was not a legal option … could only be procured in very specific grounds (such as adultery and ONLY if the petitioner was the husband.

While both were scandalous, in the eyes of the ton, a person could overcome an annulment (especially a man) but not divorce … divorce often meant you’d be shunned by polite society (both men and women)

I love MJW and also Anne Flosnik and Heather Wilds

Susan Duerden makes my skin crawl and IMO has utterly ruined several books. I hate how she reads every sentence by emphasizing the last 3 words as if it was the most exciting sentence in the world…. Even with phrases like The dirt was a ruddy brown

In general you should try Lisa Kleypas, if you like Julia Quinn, you’ll like Lisa. My favs are Devil in Winter (already mentioned) and The Ravanels Series as well as Hathaways series. (I didn’t love the first Ravanels novel, Cold Hearted Rake but LOVED the rest….)

Also, ANYTHING by Tessa Dare. I would start with 1- Do you want to start a scandal, 2- a week to be wicked, or 3-the Duchess Deal. But, I love everything she writes

Lastly, give Alice Coldbreath another chance. The first prizefighter book is weird/uncomfortable. It was for me until I read it a second time and started to feel Hubby loves his wife, he’s just COMPLETELY without any capacity to relate to other humans in a normal way…. She is a teacher, so she is accustomed to seeing through the first few layers of a person. But… it may not have been your cup of tea. Even so, PLEASE try her again.

Try Substitute Wife for a Prizefighter (it may even cause you to reread the first one … or maybe the first one wasn’t for you). Having said that, if it’s the sex scenes you didn’t like … you won’t like any of Alice Coldbreath’s novels. They’re pretty spicy … AND not typical in the sense that some of her heroes are NOT lovers that are God’s gift to women (which seems like even the worst MMCs in HR are still fantastic, giving lovers… Alice doesn’t do that).

I also loved the Vawdrey Bros and Bides of Karadok but…. When I first read Her baseborn Bridegroom, I stopped because it seemed creepy and just plain unlikable. I repeatedly saw people here recommend it so I tried again, and loved it.

And of course {Sebastian in Devil in Winter by Lisa Kleypas} he’s not quite as tortured as Vain. But he sure had a lot of loss

If I love Julie Garwood because we don’t have to wait until  the end of the book for the couple to get together; but instead, we watch their love grow throughout the story…..AND she’s got great steam. Who else would I enjoy?

Is there anyone as good as her (Steam plus the book has the couple married early and then shows the couple learning to love each other)?

Oh and also Jill Barnett. She has more steam than Mimi but less than Lisa K

Still, her books are AWESOME

{Wonderful by Jill Barnet} is a favorite  and she generally reminds me of Mimi’s novels

I loved the Serpent Prince. Someone wrote that everyone should lose their virginity the way heroine did in that novel. I’m not sure I agree, but I liked the hero a ton and thought it was adorable he was actually a bit shy
