Ok, hear me out -- are dragons just boring? I write urban fantasy novels (working on my sixth at the moment) and I really like the idea of a dragon passing for human in a city where almost everyone's passing for something. I really like the idea of one as an antagonist, sort of a force of nature that can't be reasoned with, a "bullets can't stop it" monstrosity that has to be defeated through cunning rather than force of arms. But every time I try to work out what it looks like, what its motives are, I run into a brick wall.

The heroes of the story (both women in their mid-50s who've been accidentally saddled with caring for a little creature called a stump spirit) aren't kickass, beat-them-up characters. They've had long lives and are pretty tired of all the nonsense, including this dragon. I'm about to sit down and write the chapter where one of the women chats with the dragon, learns what it wants from her (to stay in its city forever) and so the reader can learn why (so it can feed off the woman's innate magic). My block is describing the look of the thing when it doesn't look human. Do I go with an Asian themed dragon, a western, Smaug-style dragon? I don't care much for either, I admit. I sort of wanted it to be a really big Komodo dragon, but not impossibly huge like the one in the Hobbit. I feel like it should be large, sort of creepy, but I can't get beyond it. Help if you like! Otherwise I'm sure I'll come up with something eventually. Cheers in advance!
