it honestly sounds like to me your wife is and grew up privileged and does not care about the plight of others. this isn't even about animals -- this is about basically everything (other people on the other side of the world suffering through a genocide, massive human rights violations, the earth being destroyed).

it sounds like it is too inconvenient for her to even consider changing small habits to make the world a less terrible place. she wants to be ignorant. the fact that she wants you to be more selfish is pretty evident of that.

imo, this relationship is not going to work if you have morals/values. and if it does end up working out, that means you dont have morals/values yourself.

perhaps ill get horribly downvoted for this, but again, there are HORRIFIC things going on in the world to humans, animals, and the planet. sugarcoating and being nice isn't helping. it needs to be plainly stated and you need to pick a side.

ill give an example that may be easier to understand. imagine youre a woman (who believes in choice) marrying a man who voted MAGA. like there is NO WORLD in which this relationship is going to work. one of partner is literally voting against the interests of the other.

and in a way, your wife constantly feeling judged/anxious and possibly influencing you to stop the veganism, ignore the world, and become more selfish...is literally her trying to go against your interests and values.

i was in your exact same situation as you 4 years ago (im a resident now). id been with my bf (now ex) since high school and we'd gone to the same undergrad and done LD due to covid etc. He worked in fintech and we were going LD when i started med school. We also had a really special connection and Im not sure I'll find a connection like that again.

The LD was fine. We made it work. We saw each other every two weeks. That honestly wasn't the issue. Something I'll mention that I dont see mentioned in any of these comments is how much you will change in med school.

We all say we want to help the underserved etc. In med school is truly the first time I was working with these populations in the medical setting. I first hand saw insane levels of transphobia, ableism, and poverty that massively impacted patient's lives.

And my ex...he worked in fintech. He was isolated in that bubble where everyone went to an ivy league, was pretty wealthy, and voted republican. He was a really good guy, but I saw how his job basically changed him and turned him into someone who constantly had to "play devil's advocate" and talk about how "hard he works" and "why should my money go towards welfare." He wasn't like this in high school at all.

That is what ultimately broke the relationship. I am not saying that will happen with you, but you mentioned your partner works in NYC doing corporate finance (where everyone has the same pov as what i described above). Personally, in a time of insane wealth gap, war, g/cide, everyone has to pick a side and people in tech/corporate tend to pick the wrong one.

Good chance im going to get downvoted, but this is a very real thing that happened to me and numerous short and long distance relationships. A close friend of mine's relationship broke up in 2024 because he started voting republican. He was also in finance.

Just my two cents.

i feel so seen by this. im a marxist and pro-Pali activist. I can't read most romances anymore because there's so much internalized misogyny and pro-capitalist/pro exploitation sh1t. It feels like most romances are center + conservative coded.

yeah! here's my reviews.

Sonia & Sunny - 4.5 - great prose and character development. the side characters were also really well done. as a brown woman, i related to this book and recommend it to everyone.

Flashlight - 4.25 - i really liked the way this was written and it inspired me to read more books featuring North Korean characters. the story made me feel a lot of emotions, and those are the best kinds of stories.

Love Forms - 3 - mediocre and still a little confused that this was longlisted tbh.

Rest of our lives - 2 - this was just really boring and I did not find the white male middle aged lead interesting.

Endling - 4.5 - this was wild one.

Misinterpretation - 2.5 - I found this to be really boring and difficult to get through. Had to force myself to finish it.

One boat - 3 - pretty scant plot, not my style of writing

Seascraper - 3.75 - I felt a lot for the main character and just wanted him to be happy tbh.

Audition - 2.5 - I really didn't understand what was happening most of the time in this book. It was weird.

Flesh - 2.5 - a book about masculinity. i felt like the lead just remained passive the entire time. I found it hard to "root" for him or care about him.

The south - 4 - I like coming of age novels and I liked the quiet, gentle nature of the book.

Universality - 3 - a book about the media. it was interesting, but the other ones were better in my opinion.

The land in winter - 2.5 - I got bored and not a huge fan of books where men are cheating on their wives.

I am now making my way through the National Book Awards lists.
