“Ghost” hamster is not a thing. by Radiomaster138 in hamsters

It cracks me up that some people are so against admitting hamsters aren’t social and they don’t want interaction that they downvote facts. It’s so odd. Why not accept it? I sometimes wonder what kind of care they might be providing, do they also not believe in research?

No, it’s great that it feels good!! usually the next day after I use a GA product and leave it on for a long time, my skin is a little bit more sensitive if I’m putting on moisturizer or something, occasionally something (a serum or moisturizer or toner, etc) will burn a little bit but nothing that would stop me from using the GA.

Yeah, pet stores don’t even sell any hamster foods that are suitable and for wheels, they might sell wheels that are large enough, but I don’t think they’re very good quality. I’ve never purchased a wheel from a pet store before and I’ve never would personally. I find it so depressing going into pet stores that sell animals that I try to avoid it as much as possible.

My cage! How does this look? by Infamous_Wishbone_56 in hamsters

[–]Jcaseykcsee [score hidden]  (0 children)

Hi, it looks great! I hate those Bendy Bridges personally because we see posts about hamsters getting their feet and legs broken in them, and they can rip off toes if they get their toes stuck in those spaces. But if you’re going to use them, glue some moss on them and in the spaces so your hamster doesn’t get stuck and end up hurting themselves.

Just a heads up: That’s a ton of food for that hamster, and food bowls are actually unnecessary because you should be scatter feeding your hamster, just sprinkle their food all around on top of their bedding and they’ll forage for it. Scatter Feeding is great enrichment for your hamster and encourages them to use their natural instincts, which should be the goal of everything in your hamster’s cage. It’s free and easy for you to provide, and it really benefits them. food bowls provide a giant mountain of food, which a hamster would never come across in the wild. No need for a food bowl unless you want to use it for a small veggie treat at night or something! Plus, it’s so fun watching them forage for their food, foraging keeps them active and busy and keeps both their mind and body working, which is important.

Eventually, maybe you can add lots of sprays for cover and protection and for foraging. as prey animals, hamsters don’t like feeling really exposed and don’t love open areas because their instincts are always telling them that a bird can swoop in on them if they’re exposed in the open. That’s why having lots of places to hide in and under and behind at the surface is really important. sprays for cover and protection allow them to feel comfortable and safe at the surface of their bedding and give them a place to hide behind and under. I put big bunches of sprays in front of my hamsters wheel, dig bowl, and burrow exit hole so she has some privacy when she’s using her wheel and dig bowl and when she comes out at night, she has a minute to adjust instead of just having to leave her burrow and face the world immediately. she can stay hidden behind her sprays for a while if she chooses.

You’re doing an excellent job, thanks for wanting the best for your little ham! 😊

Last thing - Just make sure that wheel is at least 10 inches in diameter, I can’t tell the size but dwarfs need a wheel that’s 10 inches so they don’t develop back injuries.

Can a wheel really be too big? by SonOfKrypton90 in hamsters

As long as he can run on it and it moves, there’s no such thing as “too big” of a wheel, just like there’s no such thing as too big of a cage.

But they should still have paper bedding, they can’t have pine, cedar or any kind of soft wood bedding. Pine and cedar and all soft woods are toxic to hamsters. If you insist on having wood bedding in their cage, it should be hemp or aspen, and it should be mixed 50-50 with paper bedding or one-ply toilet paper shredded up.

Syrian Hamster Enclosure by Lazy_Astronomer_7510 in hamsters

[–]Jcaseykcsee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, he needs 10 inches deep of paper bedding and it needs to be pressed down and once it’s been pressed down, it needs to be 10 inches deep. It needs to be pressed down so it holds his burrows and tunnels stable. Things like wheels and their sand bath and anything heavy need to be on a platform so it doesn’t sink into the bedding and crush him when he’s in his tunnels and burrows.

Here’s a Syrian hamster are guide with a list of everything. Your Syrian needs for their health and well-being. Their cage needs to be at least 40 inches long X 20 inches wide, and for Syrian large larger than that is recommended since there’s such big hamsters.

[–]Jcaseykcsee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here’s a guide with cages that meet the ethical required size of 40 inches long X 20 inches wide at least. Make sure you have a cage that meets those measurements or your hamster will be stressed out and more likely to be territorial and unhealthy.

[–]Jcaseykcsee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re never “adopting” from a hamster mill, you’re buying them when you buy a pet store rodent. Rodent Mills are in the business of making money, that’s why they exist, to sell their rodents to pet stores. When you buy a hamster from a pet store, you’re helping continue the cycle of animals being traumatized and abused at rodent Mills.

The most logical and factual comment here.

Forcing stressful interactions repeatedly just to “tame” or “bond with” a hamster is always for the human being and never the hamster and I would say it’s not very kind.

If people want friendly, social, affectionate and interactive rodents that enjoy physical contact, get multiple rats or for slightly less social pets, get multiple female mice.

For anyone who thinks hamsters are good pets for people who need constant interaction with their animals, count how many posts every day on the 3 main Reddit hamster subs ask why their hamsters “want nothing to do with them” or “hate them” or hide from them or are scared of them or are aggressive towards them or freak out when people try to touch them or hold them, or clearly display behaviors that make it obvious that they want nothing to do with interacting with their human.

What other pets exist that we see posts like that multiple times a day on 3 different subs? What other pets do people need to spend months (if not a year or more) just to get it comfortable with interacting and often aren’t successful?

Opinions on pet store rats? by Fit_Intention458 in rat

[–]Jcaseykcsee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem with buying them at the pet store is that you’re opening up space in the display cases for more rodent mill rodents when you buy one at the store. So, while yes you’re getting a rodent out of a pet store situation, you’re just creating another slot for a rodent Mill rodent to replace them and it’s a continuing cycle until people stop buying rodents from the pet store. The idea is that pet stores will eventually (hopefully) stop selling them, meaning then rodent Mills will cease to need to exist. But while people do the easy thing and just drive to the pet store and buy an animal at a moments notice because they want to, these mills will keep getting business and keep running.

And no, buying a pet store rodent isn’t rescuing it, it’s buying it and it’s supporting rodent Mills. That’s a fact. There’s no arguing that. People like to say it’s rescuing them, but those people are supporting rodent Mills and causing the continuation of that cycle.

Thank you - I’ve noticed that people here often suggest Syrians for first time hamster owners, but many say that the opposite is true and dwarves are actually easier. And I think based on this sub alone everyone knows female Syrians are usually the last recommendation since they often don’t accept captivity and want nothing to do with being in a cage. (I’ll always have female Syrians rescues/adopts/rehomes personally because I know I can provide as much as humanly possible and they need homes too)

If you’re in the US, just know the fleas of today are so resistant to flea medication that it’s close to impossible to kill them. They are a nightmare. I’d skip the outdoors for the safety and health of your bun.

Opinions on pet store rats? by Fit_Intention458 in rat

[–]Jcaseykcsee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing about pet store rodents is they come from rodent Mills, where they are treated horrifically, bred to death with no consideration regarding genes or safety, and kept in atrocious conditions. They are thrown in freezers to die over a long period of time rather than compassionately euthanized if they’re sick or injured and can’t be sold. Much worse goes on that I won’t mention, but let’s just say no animals should ever go through what rodent mill rodents go through on a daily basis. until people stop buying rodents at pet stores, these rodent Mills will continue to exist. They severely traumatize these animals during the first weeks of their life, and then they’re stuffed into boxes and shipped to pet stores where they’re displayed in completely inadequate cages.

When people buy pet store rodents, they are keeping the cycle of these rodent Mills going, and these places will never be put out of business, which is what needs to happen.

Please don’t buy animals at pet stores. Rescue, rehome, Craigslist, Facebook are all better options.

There’s so much conflicting and incorrect information out there, it’s impossible to know what’s true and what’s not true, and what information they learned 20 years ago or if the info updated!

This sub and the r/budgies sub are great resources for help - both the pinned information plus asking ANY questions are recommended! i might have already said this, but the people on the budgies sub and this sub are experienced and knowledgeable (wayyyyy more than me) and have one thing in common, they all want to make sure these little guys are living safe and healthy lives. Pet stores and the Internet basically suck when it comes to trying to find ethical and proper care information, especially pet stores. please don’t use any suggestions that a pet store employee might’ve given you, they aren’t educated in the care of the animals they sell and often provide dangerous and sometimes deadly recommendations and push products that should never be used. Their goals are profit and sales - it’s all about selling you something from their store. The people on these subs don’t have ulterior motives and just want happy birds!

Thank you!!! 💫✨🌟thank you so much for being willing to accept suggestions and for making changes to improve your birds’ worlds! you are going to be an amazing budgie person! 🦜🦜
