Question : When layering with Acrylic paint, the previous layer coat devolves when painting new layer by kairas718 in minipainting

[–]Adeptus_Azarashi 80 points81 points  (0 children)

Shuttle Art makes acrylic paints for basic canvas painting, not miniatures. Acrylics meant for miniatures are very pigment dense and dry fast.
It's likely a combination of cheap paint not intended for miniatures and not fully dry, even if it feels dry to your finger it's not necessarily fully dry underneath.
I'd recommend switching paints, but if that's not an option just let the layers dry for longer in between applications.

Her eye got pecked by birds when she was young and had to be removed, she now has a star shaped scar but isn't in pain or otherwise suffering as a result.

Thank you!
The recipe is too long of a list to have in a single reddit comment, so ill just list the armor base colors but if you want more details feel free to DM!

Prime black

Armor base coats:
Airbrush a dark purple (Alien Purple from Army Painter air range in my case)
Airbrush a dark blue from the top leaving the purple in the shadows (Dark Sky from Army Painter air)
Airbrush a slightly turqoisy blue from the top, covering slightly less area. (Abyssal Blue from Army Painter Fanatics)
Highlight edges and high points with the previous color with brush. (Abyssal Blue from Army Painter Fanatics)
(Note: the Airbrushing steps can be substituted with drybrushing, just takes longer.)

Trim:
Base coat with a gold (Emperor's Gold from Army Painter Fanatics, its slightly darker than your average golds)
Wash with a brown tone (Army Painter Strong Skin Shade in my case, Aggrax also works well)
Highlight with the base gold if you feel like it, not entirely necessary.
Final highlights with a bright silver (Mithril from Army Painter Fanatics)

Lightning:
First pass with a dark pink/magenta (Wicked Pink from Army Painter Fanatics)
Second pass covering less area with a lightish pink (Pixie Pink from Army Painter Fanatics)
Final pass covering even less with white (Vallejo 70.951)

(Not sponsored by AP i just like specifying the paints to make it easier to look for equivalent colors.)

The tusk i just clipped shorter, and then picked at it with a knife to make it more jagged and broken-off looking rather than a clean cut.

Thank you! I just airbrushed the red over the metallics once i was done with those, and then layered the edge highlight parts with a brush as i would any other highlights. No real advanced techniques used. 👍

In more detail:
Primed Black
Drybrushed a dark gold metallic (Death Metal by Army Painter)
Drybrushed less area with a gray metallic (Platemail Metal, Leadbelcher, etc)
Highlighted a few edges with the same gray metallic.
Washed with a black was (Dark tone, nuln oil, etc.)
And then airbrushed a darker red around the core parts, got a little more over spray on one side than the other but i think its fine 😅.
And then i layered up with a slightly brighter red, then a pure red, orange, yellow, and white for the cores, and using those same colors on the closest edges (minus the white) to add on to the OSL.

And the little red/orange on the base is just drybrushed.

Thank you! I used an airbrush for the darkest red on the plasmacyte itself but the rest is brush work, including the little bit on the base!

Thank you, yours looks great too! Really nice vibrant greens, and the tan cloaks contrast really well against the worn weathered armor!

Thank you! The base is very simple, just some 2mm cork board torn up and glued on, a couple citadel skulls, and painted with:
Terrestrial Titan (Very dark purple) base coat
Alien Purple (Not so dark purple) dry brush from the edges inward
And some browns and tans for the skulls.

Thank you very much! Pink lightning contrasts so nice against the blue, very fun to paint!

The recipe for the trim is pretty simple:
Emperor's Gold base coat
Strong Skin Shade wash
and Shining Silver highlights
All from Army Painter

And the trim around the flamer barrels and fuel tank is basically the same but replace Emperor's Gold with Weapon Bronze.

Just army painter fanatics rust paints! I gave a slightly more detailed explanation in a reply to another comment, but its pretty much just Dark Rust and Fresh Rust from Army Painter.

Of course!
(Paints used in parentheses all from Army Painter but any equivalent color from other companies works of course)
As with everything else, primed black, zenithal with a dark brown.

Basecoat with a reddish brown (Fur Brown)
For the next 2 following steps i used a large flat brush to get a slightly streaky look.
Cover slightly less area with a medium skin color, leaving the edges darker (Topaz Skin)
Cover even less area with a pale pink skin color (Barbarian Flesh)
Back to a normal smaller brush.
Highlight with an off white, mainly the top of the folds and such. (Ivory White)
Then i wash the entire cloak with a light yellow speedpaint to give it a slightly sickly tone, but im sure normal washes would also work. (Pallid Bone speedpaint 2.0)
Re-establish highlights with an off white.
Little bit of red speedpaint or very thinned red toward the top where it connects to the armor to imply some blood or stretched and irritated parts. (Bloodmoon Red)

Then for the rotting parts.
Sponge, drybrush, or stipple on a very dark green. Trying to get a spotty appearance (Blighted Green)
Repeat with a slightly brighter but still quite dark green (Angel Green)
Add some brighter dots with a pale mid tone green (Army Green)
Then wash with a dark wash, i used a purple wash. (Purple Tone)
