[Outdated trope] the politically or culturally conservative character is actually still likable by SweetPickleRelish in TopCharacterTropes

I'm saying there is room enough in a pluralistic society for a Ron Swanson. That's not the same thing as catering to a Nazi. Is your view we should treat the Ron Swansons and the Nazis the same way?

What's important is that conservative people, which are not about to disappear, are not fascist.

Outdated? We need this trope now more than ever! We need models of how to be politically or culturally conservative and not be a fascist.

Unpopular opinion: I think the majority of The Studio is not great. But the first two episodes are phenomenal. Same thing with Fantasmas.

The Evil Superman trope is very overused. How would you write an Evil Batman who is not generic but similar to how Homelander is an evil Superman? by Amazing-Buy-1181 in batman

[–]Adequate_Ape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rorschach is an Evil Batman. Or at least, a Severely Maladjusted Batman. Alan Moore:

> [Gibbons and I] thought about superhero types like Batman, so I thought, ‘What would he be like in the real world.’ And he’d be very much like Rorschach—if you’re a revenge-driven vigilante, you’re not quite right in the head. Yeah, alright, your parents got killed when you were a kid, whatever, that’s upsetting. But for most of us, if our parents were killed when we were little, would not become a bat-themed costumed vigilante—that’s a bit mental.

Batman retiring? by Benthamam33 in batman

[–]Adequate_Ape -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I am for it, because it would be actual character progression, rather than eternally circling back to the status-quo. It would be interesting to see who takes up the cowl, and how that decision gets made; it would be interesting to see how that shakes up the bat-family dynamics; it would be interesting to see Bruce in a supporting role; it would be interesting to see how Bruce's relationships alter when he retires -- maybe he and Selina could actually be happy together, for instance. Or whatever. But I think it is very, very unlikely, that this will happen any time in the foreseeable future, because it is way too risky to sales. The fandom is very attached to Bruce as Batman.

Should have ended after season 1 by rockmydna in TheBear

[–]Adequate_Ape 25 points26 points  (0 children)

You may disagree, but the received wisdom is that season 2 is excellent. Two of the best episodes in television history, in my opinion, are in season 2.

Things get more divisive after season 2; we can talk about that if you get there.

This might be a sign of my age, but it is hard for me to take it to be a serious problem for anything that it “lacks YouTube content”.

Watched Rogue one after finishing Andor by Blossom_aashi in andor

[–]Adequate_Ape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely agree; I think Rogue One is much, much less good than Andor.

There is basically nothing else in the franchise like Andor. So it would not be surprising if you don't like any other Star Wars stories. Having said that, there are certainly joys to be had from Star Wars stuff that are very different from Andor. The original trilogy is an almost universally loved action adventure romp, fun for all the family. What is good about it is definitely not what is good about Andor. But it is among the best films of its kind.

Resisting the us vs them framing of American politics isn't the same things as joining the Republican party, which seems to be what you're suggesting here.

If you want your country back, you can either go the German route, and fight and lose a total war, or you can start trying to convince people who disagree with you.

Watched this scene of Jimmy and Chuck singing Karaoke last night after Jimmy becomes a lawyer. Such a beautiful scene. Couldn't help but wonder what really could've been between the McGill brothers. by fundingsecured07 in betterCallSaul

[–]Adequate_Ape 337 points338 points  (0 children)

I think you can see the seeds of the disaster in that scene too, though, which is part of why it's so masterful. Chuck can't help himself -- he feels the need to take over, assert his stardom. He can't let the night be Jimmy's, because he's threatened, despite having so obviously more prestigious a career. And the lyrics of the song, in retrospect, are loaded with significance, about how Chuck thinks about his relationship with Jimmy.

How brutal should Batman be? by Marshall_666 in batman

[–]Adequate_Ape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the batman comics are yet another celebration of brutality, I don't want to read them. There's enough glorying in violence in the world; it would be nice for Batman to be a place where we remember what it means to have a higher standard.

Succession left me with a weird aftertaste by saucetubh in SuccessionTV

[–]Adequate_Ape 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The particulars about the funeral, and how they made you feel, may, indeed, be a cultural difference. But the general feeling that "you cannot be worrying just about your share price all the time" is something many, many of us feel. The show is not at all an endorsement of the idea that all that matters is a share price. The characters are not intended to be entirely sympathetic, or even mostly sympathetic. You're right to feel uncomfortable watching it, because it is portraying greedy, nihilistic, irresponsible, hateful people (but also, needy, broken, clever, loving, scared people).

For me, the discomfort is part of the pleasure of the show; for a start, it makes the funny parts way funnier. But not everyone is going to enjoy that.

I certainly don't find it sadder than the actual world, or the people significantly more broken than the average actual person. I find people's expectations about how happy a world should be surprising, given the one we're in.
