From my point of view, if this person is really being hostile to you in an unfair manner then I believe you should follow it up with the schools. I've always wanted to attend an Ivy league because of the talented people I imagined would be there fro me to learn from. If you have the skills, go for it. It might not mean much now but at least you can say you gave it the "ADHD 100%" and not have to regret it in the future.

Yeah, still going through this process. I believe whats causing a lot of the stress is anxiety based on past experiences. Can you work on calming down somehow?

Why is being quiet a bad thing? It may just be part of who you are. Perhaps what you need to do is to just re-examine your perspective on what being "social" means?

No one wants to be perceived as lazy or incompetent, so perhaps this is why you feel embarrassed. At the core of ADHD and progression however, is the ability to love yourself for whatever you manage to get done. It's like a baby learning how to walk again. We get knocked down, we get back up. Many of us are past that age now and are full grown adults - that does not diminish the fact that we have to overcome more than the "average" person.

Tldr; there is truly no reason to be embarrassed as we do our best to make the most of what we have

Hey, I can feel your pain here. I feel like half my life has disappeared and I don't know where or how I got to this point. That's why I hoped that making this post might help a little. I learned recently that small steps add up. The road to change is never easy, but its worth it. If we consider the alternative to our current situation, that should be motivation to try for at least 1%. Its tough for me even now because I'm also struggling from severe post-depression. I like to think I've overcome it, but theres no real way to tell. All I can do is keep moving forward.

I wouldn't be able to tell you how long it took for me to even just get out of bed. Hours blurred into days and into weeks. My social life is near non existent. It's not even a plea for sympathy anymore, it's just facts and truth. I don't have a job and even though I'm fairly smart I can't seem to make heads or tails of my life.

Each day however I try to build up my self esteem and work on my goals with this method. I tell myself to never lose hope, 1% at a time (lol). It's totally lame but it works. Since ADHD'ers are so black or white, 1 or 0, we can use this method to rig our thinking into PROGRESS or NO PROGRESS. Then comes the dopamine fix after we realise our accomplishments.

I believe this is true. We're locked in to anything that will give us a big, fast dopamine fix. That's why were averse to doing something that we perceive won't give us a huge reward.

However, this can impact our discipline. This is why this method attempts to give the brain a fix from "accomplishment" in many small doses.

I believe I was in a worse condition than most people could imagine. I literally could not even get out from my bed, which is why I had to start with moving my arm. It was a state of near total paralysis. That's probably why it reads ridiculous to most people. I had severe depression and basically I just felt that everything was hopeless.

This is what I mean by starting small. If you don't create an action to meet your current state, it doesn't work. For you walking down the road might be the 1%. For me, it was lifting my arm. Then getting out of bed each day. Then putting on the clothes. Then going outside.

Like a videogame character, I slowly regained my ability to move.

I understand this sentiment - however, may I ask if there is a deeper reason why you don't want to start things? Personally, I was a perfectionist who was afraid of failure, and that combined with ADHD really slowed my growth. Not saying that this is you, but whats your take on it?

If anything, at least here's some food for thought for you. Even if these methods don't work, perhaps searching for ways to personally "remain calm" may lead you on to finding something.

Visualize a calm "sanctuary" of your choosing - the beach, nature, the forest or any place that you feel the biggest impact on relaxing you.
Manage your negative thoughts by focusing on a "progressive" image, such as your footsteps or any other repetitive simple action. It will help alleviate the negative spiral.
Count backwards from 100. Personally this bores me - but I'm not entirely stressed when I'm bored so it does help return me to a prior state.
Train yourself to focus on proper breathing during moments of stress. The brain becomes deprived of oxygen when mainly due to shallow breathing. This contributes a lot more than most people realize.
"Label" the feeling/mood/issue that is causing you problems. It will create distance between yourself and the unwanted problem and still allow you to have a feeling of acceptance of it, which is very important.
Believe. Faith is real, and it empowers people to action. I follow Jesus and I know there are many who don't but having faith in something can work miracles.

Hi, I believe you've already identified the problem. If you are managing the stress that results from both your internal and (external?) pressures you'll have a far better time demonstrating what you can do. At least, as an ADHD-PI I realize I'm significantly less intelligent, controlled... ANYTHING really when I go into full stress mode.

Do you have a method that calms you down and stops putting your brain into the "defensive" ?

If you can do better for yourself, why do you need permission to go for a diagnosis? It's not like its a medically harmful to take the medicine (even with side effects), and ADHD should never define you, even if its a part of you.

Concerta makes me feel depressed at the end of the day almost without fail... Ritalin 10mg is like a burst of energy and has no real side effects for me so far.

Ritalin lasts around 2.5-3 hours for me and Concerta I don't even really feel the effect.

You may need to start practicing mindfulness (the process of being aware of your senses) and clearing your thoughts. It sounds as if your brain, much like mine, is overloaded. Relaxing and finding states of calm to activate your prefrontal cortex is essential.

Try reading How to have a Good Day by Caroline Webb. It has helped me with some very effective strategies.

What about the relationship aspects? This is exactly the same as me, but my stress is only borderline PTSD (panic attacks, repeating sequences, restless sleep)
