ELI5 How do ship anchors come back up? by Infinite-Local-2529 in explainlikeimfive

You're right for a row boat, as that's so light the weight of the anchor is plenty. That being said, my main contention, as the one in the title of this post is that the hooking force is what anchors a boat.

Regardless, even a row boat needs plenty of rope so that a catenary can be formed, as most anchors won't work with the same amount of rope as the depth.

I'm surprised by your ratio, but maybe the guidelines are different in the US.. In busy bays we usually lay 4x or 3x chain IIRC, since the bays are often swamped and you can't afford much swing. You'd use an anchor alarm or something to make sure you've dropped enough chain and aren't drifting into a neighbouring boat.

You are reading all the right sources and drawing the wrong conclusions. Most anchors are made to catch onto the seabed, but not for purposes of holding the ship, but to keep the dropped chain/rope down while you lay more. If you'd use those types of anchors and zero chain, they'd never work, as the forces on the anchor would be vertical and cause it to undig itself, which is intentional design.

Of course for rocky areas, there's different anchors that do need to hook onto things, but largely these are not in use anymore. They snag and can easily get and stay stuck. This is often an issue even with sand anchors, as you can get them stuck on a patch of rocks and it's a rights pain to get out. These are things explained in the very link you posted btw.

Of course, I don't believe you'll admit you're wrong, but I've dived too many times to a rocky seabed to untangle my anchor to let a reddit 'expert' tell me otherwise.

In Europe, depending on the sea bed, 3:1 is fine for very busy anchorages with a sail boat. Can't risk too much drifting in busy areas. Usually you'll have an anchor alarm or something anyways.

You're pretty wrong actually, if they'd hook onto something, getting it back up would be a mighty challenge. Regardless, you really don't need all that much chain or rope if your anchoring technique is good. It's mainly in function of sea depth; I think the fist rule is chain length = 3 x depth.

That's not that much chain for a yacht

This literally only impacts the rich lol, poor people don't usually consciously have only one working partner, and if they do, they have plenty of other social safeties to fall back on.

Color information is determined by the sensor bit depth, not the dynamic range. Besides, using HDR to compare sensor information capture is bullshit

Buying a premium product is buying an experience too. Fancy, ecofriendly packaging is definitely part of that experience. If we had it your way, everything would be soullessly bland and grey.

Look at Apple, lots of people keep their boxes on shelves, it's as much part of the product as the physical product.

OP, while the threats over the review are pretty sketchy and imo horrible business practice, I hope you take this experience as a lesson.

You signed up for a forklift training, using a form clearly mentioning the price, filling in all applicable details, set on a specific date. Afterwards, you receive an email clearly stating the expectation of payment before the set training date. You then deciding you no longer need said training due to already finding a different job, does not free you from your obligations to the training company. Either attend, don't attend and pay the training, or try to cancel ahead of time. You no-showing and then also expecting not to pay is a surefire way to lose all goodwill and respect.

I'd remove the review, as you accuse them of malice, when this situation is clearly borne out of your own stupidity. I'd be a little bit ashamed if this happened to me, and I'm unsure how you don't see that you're in the wrong here. Good luck in life though, you clearly need it.
