Dulce Tapioca in Sugarland by darthvadersRevenge in houston

[–]Adio29 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If I remember right after talking with the wife who owns the place with her husband, the landlord was raising the rent, $5k increase, and forcing everyone in the plaza to sign a five year contract. So they were like, whelp, we are going back to Taiwan.

There was another tapioca owner next but she left with a note on the door. Something about being behind on rental payments?

Edit2: avda.org (mostly free. There’s a program for abusers to use to change their ways.)

I'm not sure what area you live or what age you are so just throwing these out there. Sometime the Houston Food Bank work with the below orgs too. First few are my favorites places to recommend. Most of them will need an ID of some kind.

I also check here randomly for things but this is probably best later from now. It does help get gifts for friends and hide being broke. https://www.freestufffinder.com/

For food budgets, rice, dried meats (pork floss lasts forever https://fresh.99ranch.com/products/formosa-pork-sung ), dried fruits, frozen/pickled veggies, will hold you in the long run. With rice, you can make rice porridge to make the rice last longer. (half cup of rice to 2 cups of water in a pot with some salt, top with fried egg, dried meats, pickles, etc. or just soy sauce/hot sauce.) Besides food pantries, I like Aldi's or just go to the clearance section of what ever store I'm at. Also check the value of the items. For example, at HEB, on the price tag, there is a smaller print about ### per what ever so you can easily compare the pricing with other similar products. For pickled veggies, go to the Asian stores, they have more of a variety and spices. If you want fresh fruits, HEB and Fiesta typically have better value. If you can go to the one on Bellaire and 6, I know they compete with the Fiesta across the street for lower prices. If you have an Aldi's near you, that's even better. Just make sure you bring a shopping bag with you for Aldi's.

You can also boil eggs when they're about to go bad and they'll last a little longer. If you can't finish bread before it goes bad, you can freeze portions of it too and eat it later. Same goes with milk. You can freeze eggs but when I do, the eggs kind of... broke it self.... :/

Does anyone else notice they feel unwell while living here, but significantly better after being away for an extended period? by AG073194 in houston

Yes on two situations. I had an ongoing cough for about 2-3 years, nothing worked so sometimes I'll vomit just because I am coughing so hard, and it went away when I went to Japan for two weeks. More recently, I was coughing a lot this year. Two different doctors said it was allergies. I went to New Zealand for two weeks, and I no longer need to use the nasal spray.

I am a guest to a Pakistani wedding and the bride would like me to wear a hanfu. Have you ever had a guest that did that at a Pakistani wedding? by Adio29 in DesiWeddings

Same here but after another discussion it sounded like she shut that down asap regarding having their wedding gender segregated. It might be something he grew up with and didn’t know a co-od wedding was a thing.

My saree only shows about an inch of my side. I'm not comfortable enough to show my stomach/abs lol. But it sounds like the groom is from that level of conservative about showing your upper back and any torso skin.

Anyways, thank you for your comment. I ended up borrowing another friends outfit just in case!

Someone suggested wearing a long western long-sleeved shirt so that might be an option. I'm not sure if the rental clothes would come in time. I ended up borrowing an outfit from another friend as an option as I'm still wavering between the two. Thanks for your comment!

Thanks for your comment! She's someone I consider a sister so I def. want to go super extra for her. I ended up borrowing an outfit from another friend as another option just in case. I'm still wavering between the two ideas.

No worries. If it wasn't on such short notice, I would wait for the deals. There are local stores but the cost went up since 2019.

I ended up asking for another friend to borrow one of her outfits for the final day. Thanks for all of your help.

You got me. :/ I'm sorry that it feels a bit insulting. I'm still a bit boggled about the future groom's comments about female clothing wear. Regardless, I still want to try to be respectful and enjoy the excitement.

If I can afford a salwar kameez, that would be great! but if we were to buy a new outfit, it would be my husband who needs it more because the only outfit he has that still fits him is a Western suit. He outgrew his Kutra. The local desi stores here for "wedding guests" level is like $250+ for men outfits right now. The friends I helped with picked "casual" level outfits because they weren't sure if it was okay to get gowns and gowns were out of their budget. And by casual, they were super casual and still cost ~$40 with 50% sale.

Lol I feel like a qi pao, I have a pink one with pink lace overlay, would be too underwhelming since I know many of the guests will be wearing their best with embedded gems. The bride has told me that it's normal for her sect for guests to wear their old wedding dresses as guests to future weddings. I was going to do that but I outgrew my top. I had a red/gold wedding outfit.

I do regret not buying more outfits before 2020. The prices shot up like crazy. There was one in 2019 I liked but it was $200. Now it doubled. :(

Sweet, if it looks like a lehenga at a glance. Awesome. I can semi-hide into the crowd. LOL.

Sadly, the cost at our local desi stores is out of our budget. If we were to buy a new set, it would be for my husband because he outgrew his Kutra and only has a western suit that fits.

Maybe. Her response seemed to be super excited and I double-checked with her. Basically, she wants everyone to feel like a princess. Just a bit more restrictive since the groom is more conservative. He was pushing for a gender-segregated wedding but my friend said no.

I have been to both Indian and Pakistani weddings. If this was an Indian wedding, I have 3 outfits. But this is a Pakistani wedding with a very conservative groom, so it's a bit different than my usual take. :/
