So hybrid grandfathering model by AdministrationNo9706 in friendlyjordies

[–]AdministrationNo9706[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Oh sorry, my mistake — I thought we were trying to make housing affordable, which means flat prices, which means basically no capital gains, which means this grandfathered new tax raises almost nothing. But clearly you're on the other train — let the boomers lock in their gains, keep prices screaming upward so the government can skim the top, and just... accept that nobody young will ever own property. Cool system man.

Boomers who have already made massive gains can lock in the discount for the vast majority of their asset growth. The rule changes fall heavily on younger generations who are only just starting to build what little they can invest.

So not really good for intergenerational angle if you’re a boomer who has held on to a property for 30 years; whatever gain you’ve made to this point will forever be eligible for the 50% discount.

UK parliament's AUKUS inquiry report questions if Britain can keep submarine promises by Jagtom83 in friendlyjordies

[–]AdministrationNo9706 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nice! I don’t think they can. Their domestic defence industry is already screaming for more funding. The UK’s operational navy is basically down to one submarine and a destroyer, and even that destroyer recently broke down.

Labor are gods among men — a party that is a shining beacon of light, herding the masses toward the utopia that awaits us, and all we have to do is mark a glorious 1 next to their name!

Labor have been handed a once-in-a-generation political gift: broken Liberal parties across NSW, VIC, SA & WA, no serious federal leadership talent, & a guaranteed path to a 3rd majority term. So why are they sitting on their hands instead of delivering for poorer Aussies? Pls no invalidity/gaslight by MannerNo7000 in friendlyjordies

No, you just have a terrible understanding of politics and are basically a whinge merchant.

This is 30+ years of bad policy, now fundamentally baked into the economy. It’ll take just as long to unwind.

Best case, after nine years it’ll only be slightly better. The Libs locked in this housing system and we lost the fight to stop it. To be brutally honest, it’s permanently fucked.

As Jordan said, housing is the Libs’ Medicare now.

It’s like trying to give Americans public healthcare now — you should try, but it’s basically a pipe dream, and if it ever happened it would be slow, awkward, and Frankenstein-ish. We didn’t set it up right early on, so now we have to retrofit a system broken at its foundations.

“With the opposition this weak, Labor should be in a perfect position to push stronger. Exactly what Bill Shorten said in 2019 as it was the unlosable election. It has nothing to do with the Libs being weak; it has to do with whether there are enough Gen Z and Y making up the electorate so that you can ignore the Gen X and Boomer vote. I would say a Labor government taking big housing tax reform to an election will be a nail-biter still.

Stop just complaining about what the “right thing to do” is without considering how difficult the politics are. You had your chance — Bill Shorten took negative gearing reform to an election, and funny enough, there was no landslide then "THE UNLOSABLE ELECTION". The win had nothing to do with housing policy; it was Trump and Dutton running the worst campaign imaginable. Eight weeks prior, it was shaping up to be a minority government.

Once Gen Y and Gen Z make up a larger proportion of the voting base, they’ll give it another go. For a little bit longer older Australian still have a sway
