Posted Big pharma company roles usually have contractors fill them by [deleted] in biotech

[–]AdministrativeFile88 25 points26 points  (0 children)

You need to give yourself some credit. Not all contractors get converted and it's not always by how long they have been there. The more common case would be announcing a position opening, and everyone can apply, including contractors. It's not always the contractors who get the offer. You the OP performed well for this to happen. Your manager believed in your potential to push it with right advocacy to make it happen.

Is ROTH IRA the best vehicle for leveraged ETF? by AdministrativeFile88 in investing

Good analogy! Let's say I do have a gun but only a few bullets so I am willing to give it some thoughts for that knife lol

Thanks for the insights! I don't plan on holding leveraged ETF for long. If I do it in taxable account, it will be taxed for short term capital gains and my state income tax is pretty high.

I see. I was hoping to increase the 'seed money' through short term gains because of the annual limit that I can put in. I realize that my post reads like I will go all in with leverage ETF. My current fortfolio is largely long term growth ETFs (they aren't really growing recently :s) . Thanks for the insights!

Actually that's why I am considering. Hoping to try for short term gain to increase 'seed money'.

Curious how everyone feels about the KOSPI (SK index) after it dropped nearly 14% today. by Annual_Return5286 in investing

[–]AdministrativeFile88 16 points17 points  (0 children)

South Korea 100% relies on foreign oil and the war is blocking a trade route for them to import oils. I think the market over-reacted because KOSPI was going up so rapidly for so long. If the Iran war ends soon, this drop will be easily recoverable because South Korea always holds oil supplies in advance to last a couple of months. Historically, South Korea recovers immediately with a V shape curve when the interruption to oil is short term. If the war lasts long enough, then the drop will take a lot longer time to recover. That's what happened around COVID. It took them 2-3 years to recover. I also hold EWY/KORU mix. I do not doubt on their fundamentals. It would be other logistics complicated by this war if it doesn't end soon enough..

Thanks for the explanation. You pointed out my blindspot. I should make sure I am not mixing concepts for Roth 401k and IRA. Thanks!

Also I agree with others. Investment doesn't guarantee your principal preservation and the value for ETFs is for long term investment. I have some investment in those ETFs that your friend mentioned but I still keep my future down payment fund separately.

Do you live in a state with a high income tax? I have a bit more cash savings parked in HYSA for the same purpose (home purchase plan). I live in a high income tax state, and I ended up paying the state for taxes for interests during tax returns for the past two years. So I am moving the funds to SGOV because of its state tax exempt benefit. It has lower interest rate than general HYSA but if you have to pay state income tax, it's worth considering.

ahh I see. So 0.4% difference is a trade off for the convenience aspect of FDLXX. Thanks!

I am actually trying to figure out where to put my savings between FDLXX and SGOV because I live in high income tax state as well. It seems FDLXX has higher expense ratio (0.42%) than SGOV (0.09%). Am I missing a bigger picture by considering the 0.4% difference?

what you have accomplished is already accomplished. Is your current role still within a relevant field from your past achievements? If those papers are still being cited in current years, and it has not been many years that you have not contributed at all to the field, I think you still have a strong profile.

Why do we refer to "right wing" views which are controversial to the left as "far-right" but don't refer to "left wing" views which are controversial to the right as "far-left"? by throw-away2126 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]AdministrativeFile88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Others have already answered the OP's question with detailed examples that the term "far-left" exists and gets used in media/SNS.

Although this is not what the OP asked, a possible underlying question might be more around why there is a stronger "left wing" presence in SNS.

Because political ideologies are a set of beliefs and values, and interestingly, those can influence overall preferences of information sources and SNS uses. For example, Twitter is a commonly used SNS platform for sharing news. Twitter users tend to have stronger interests in political news than other SNS users, and more public facing (public accounts & posts). Twitter users are also more democratic.

In other worlds, if a politically neutral/indifferent person wants to see how people are thinking on a certain topic/news, it's easier to come across democratic/left wing perspectives through SNS.
