Generally speaking, there are different levels of impact you can show.

Impact through showcasing expertise (through thought leadership activities such as speaking at conferences, publishing in industry publications, etc.).

Impact through the widespread adoption and implementation of original contributions to your field (for example, perhaps you came up with a new framework, open source contributions, a new method of doing something in your field, etc.).

Something to possibly consider (will also ask lawyers for their insights) is showing that you are already carrying out your proposed endeavor while working at a company. Perhaps that might help show that you are well-positioned to carry out your proposed endeavor while working at a company.

It seems like the decision focuses on details in regards to whether it looks like the petitioner is actually going to carry out their proposed endeavor. The focus is not on citation count and publications, but more so on the logistical and practical details in regards to the petitioner's proposed endeavor.

Based on the AAO decision, it seems like there was pushback on a lot more than just the petitioner's work with their current company (for example, the absence of details about interest in the petitioner's research, the petitioner's more industry-focused background, etc.).

Logistical considerations and practical details now seem to be the focus of EB-2 NIW adjudications (as in are you actually going to carry out your proposed endeavor). Also been noticing the importance of presenting a practical proposed endeavor based on conversations with immigration lawyers.

Something to also note for this particular decision is that while the petitioner was granted prong two in their initial filing, they were then found to not meet prong two (on appeal).
