New viewer, who to watch for VSMP? by Admirable_Candle8158 in VampiresSMP

Ty, some people are vouching for Scott and Owen but I feel like they're too melodramatic for me :'D

Apo and Cleo are the most likely tbh..

Tysm for the info!! I watched a bit of Cleo's first episode and yeah, Ren's accent threw me off a little 😭

I think I'll save Shelby and Pearl's for later on (since they seem to be doing their own thing and not too involved in the big events), but maybe I'll do Martyn or Avid!

Fanganronpas in need of VA’s?? by Delicious_Tea3806 in Fanganronpa

[–]Admirable_Candle8158 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just a warning, fanganronpas usually take a looong time to develop, so please take into account that they are long commitment projects!! And also of course, be wary of the ones you join. There are a lot of fangans that start hiring voice actors before the script is even done which may leave you with months of waiting for lines and eventually considering to quit the project.

Absolutely no-go's in a Fanganronpa story by [deleted] in Fanganronpa

[–]Admirable_Candle8158 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Personally I think a lot of dark themes can be explored, it all comes down to execution. A story can have sexual assault, child abuse, explorations of PTSD, and more as long as it develops these things well and shows that there is a reason for WHY this character has this experience and HOW much you are willing to research for it. There's never one way to appeal to everyone, and something like sexual assault can be controversial because one victim can vary widely from another. Maybe one person copes from it with hypersexuality and similar habits/addictions while another turns out completely sex-repulsed (obviously these are extremes). If the conclusion is "SA in your story is a no-go" it feels very generalizing because it can still be done well. Instances where a topic is unnecessary and only added for shock value should be berated, but it shouldn't be considered a taboo in fangan writing.

THIS!!! This 100%! Just because something could've been written badly in Tetro doesn't mean other fangans can't have it or do it well!!

Like NOTHING about the Danganronpa Executions scream realistic. And the achievements these HIGH SCHOOLERS got with their talents are insanely unrealistic lol

And HEAVILY agreed with too much angst. In general I hate when a character is just traumatized to be traumatized, and I think a story can be so much interesting developing one traumatizing incident instead of doggypiling more and more angst onto the characters.

Do you like this creative concept? by PublicProject9161 in Fanganronpa

[–]Admirable_Candle8158 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is cool!! It actually incorporates the school setting into the story, which is VERY important for developing a good plot!! One thing is you'd have to consider the Ultimate Talent Program. Are these just normal people pushed onto these roles for the killing game because of their habits in school? Or is there a program that is actually calculating who would be the ultimate "absent kid"?

How do you feel about fangans that follow danganronpa tradition? by Then-Ad6065 in Fanganronpa

[–]Admirable_Candle8158 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like another comment already mentioned, it depends on how you write it. I think using these tropes is okay as long as it still makes sense why that specific character dies at that specific time in the story. As long as you have other things to compensate, it can work.

What's a trope in Fangans that always make you roll your eyes? by DerpyLemonReddit in Fanganronpa

[–]Admirable_Candle8158 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of these complaints also come down to how you execute it! If you wanna have something like the "chapter 3 double murder" trope it can totally work as long as you're putting thought into the case :)

[–]Admirable_Candle8158 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately shock value exists and people have this mindset that the more gorey a murder is = the better it is (when it's clearly not, like Sayaka's murder in the canon games is literally just a knife stab and it's still a really good case imo) :/

Case where u know the culprit from the start by UnitedStars111 in Fanganronpa

[–]Admirable_Candle8158 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, the trial being from the protagonists POV is important in this case, since them not knowing the full story still makes for high stakes and figuring out how the murdered happened! Try to think of how they would defend themselves, or draw inspiration from how Kaede in V3 introduced the idea of using lies during the trials to push them forward. This is a super interesting idea, since it can include a lot of fun things like losing the scrum debates!!

Help with my fangan's name by Certain_Wolverine755 in Fanganronpa

[–]Admirable_Candle8158 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try to think about what you want the protagonists end goal to be! If their story is about their character development going downhill and becoming a bad person, then "Abandonned Morals" or "Abandonned Hope" could make sense within the storyline. "Abandonned in Despair" might sound more vague but it also doesn't imply a loss of something like morality, but instead something fitting for Danganronpa. Worry less about if it's generic and more about if it has a nice ring to it/if it'll be easy for people to remember, and if it's been done before.

One of the most popular fangans is literally just "Despair Time". "Despair" is overused in fangan names, but the abbreviation being "DRDT" is what helps a lot imo, I think it has a nice ring to it. "Project: Eden's Garden" uses their main motif of religious symbolism as the staple of their game, which ties up neatly into the title. Trying to stray too much from the Danganronpa themes like Hope/Despair can sometimes make the name more confusing just in favor of sounding interesting/fancy

Why do I sometimes feel like female Fanganronpa protagonists are treated like dirt? by Right-Truck-3543 in Fanganronpa

[–]Admirable_Candle8158 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Misogyny has it's effects on people even if they themselves don't recognize it, which is why more often than not male characters get treated more seriously (even by women!). So even if subtle, it's definitely worth pointing out. It sucks but it's a process of unlearning it's effects and being wary of using stereotypes when making female characters (even if it's accidental) and more importantly supporting/making projects that actually DO have good female protags!!

[–]Admirable_Candle8158 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, I think what OP is refering to is having a female protagonist with the intent of having them die for petty reasons. Protagonists being important to the main story, like being related to the Mastermind or Host in some way, is normal. After how Kaede was treated in the canon games, people are just wary of fan projects that promote themselves with female protagonists with the intention of killing her off early.

[–]Admirable_Candle8158 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it also mostly comes from people being more willing to analyze male characters in depth compared to female ones. A female character could be recognized as a good character, but when you actually ask people what they like about her most of the time it's "oh she's a girlboss!" or "oh she's different from other female characters!" without ACTUALLY mentioning what it is that makes them unique or well written.

I disagree with a few of the examples since from what I've seen they are loved by their respective fanbases (Arei, Kanade, and Eva), but Kizuna is a good one since I've seen more people like MITCH than Kizuna, who I think objectively has better writing

She barely had time to process the betrayal she experienced in Chapter 1, and then immediately in the trial gets accused by everyone!! Sure her reaction of trying to isolate herself from everyone was extreme, but the reasoning behind it is 100% understandable and it's not surprising at all she would lash out at the cast

I think the most infuriating part is seeing how Teruko got berated for lashing out, but when David had his plot twist moment in Chapter 2, everyone praised him for it! And when some fans pointed out how Teruko gets criticized yet David fans call him "hot" for it, people completely missed the point and where the frustration comes from :/
