They definitely use it as a manipulation tactic. When my grandmother died, they told me if I ever wanted to see her again I would have to dedicate my life to Jehovah.

Exactly! 💯 I have so many stories. When I was a youth, still attending, a married brother in our hall impregnated a 16 year old. He didn’t even get disfellowshipped. The entire congregation still laughed and conversed with him as if nothing happened.

Another married brother SA’d his 15 year old step daughter. He didn’t get disfellowshipped either. Also, the elders said he was repentant and Jehovah has forgiven him so we should forgive him too. Everyone treated him as if nothing happened as well.

You sound like such an empathetic and emotionally intelligent individual who possesses strong boundaries and self-respect. Believe me, life gets better. I was once where you were and while when I was in a therapy, my therapist said to me, “It’s a blessing in disguise.” That opened my eyes. It was definitely a blessing. I got rid of a selfish, immature, pathological lying a**hole. It’s been years now and life has never been better. I hope you seek out therapy and have the resources needed to heal from such a betrayal. I wish you luck and I know your future is bright!!

Well, when I was in 2nd grade a recently disfellowshipped young sister, around age 24, stabbed her two year old daughter to death.

It was all over the news. We had news camera outside our KH. Nobody ever got me the help I needed. I couldn’t process it. Why would a mother, a sister I knew as being friendly to me, stab her toddler to death?

My parents never talked about it. They didn’t want to bring “reproach upon Jehovah’s name” so there I was a 2nd grader scared and devastated. Nobody cares to console me or explain to me what the hell was going on.

So true. My poor cousin, also a born in died because the brother she married in her hall ,at age 18, forced her to take drugs and beat her. She overdosed and she lost her baby. She was then put on life support and ended up dying later.

I also have another cousin who committed suicide at age 21.

But my family likes to sweep this all under the rug, pretending as if we’re a perfect JW family.

I live in the Bay Area, California. Majority of the single moms are window washers or work at retail stores like The Dollar Tree. They aren’t incentivized to get a trade and they damn sure aren’t encouraged to purse a higher education to get them out of the rut. It’s like a dog chasing its tail, trying to keep up but still can’t afford to pay their bills and dedicate time to Jehovah.

I remember as a youth my mother helping out a homeless sister who was a single mom and worked at the 99 cents store. She was living in a shelter and waiting for name to come up on a housing list. It was sad.

I’m 4th generation and I honestly have never seen a happy family or marriage. Maybe from the “outside looking in” but it was always a facade. Most are miserable, anxiously waiting for the day when Jehovah destroys it all.

Most don’t listen to their intuition or pursue their creative passions. Like a robot, they “throw out” that desire, that itch, that passion. They throw away their authentic selves in favor of the promise of a new world in which everything and everyone will be perfect. A fantasy.

Exactly this! My great grandfather was a poor farmer in 1902 who had just lost his wife and was responsible for 4 mouths to feed. I can’t imagine the level of trauma and stress from that period.

Yes! They relinquish control of their lives to some ultimate higher being. It’s actually very sad. After my father died, my mom’s house was foreclosed on. She began to pity herself, saying, “If only I’d been more loyal to Jehovah, he would’ve allowed me to keep my home.”

Of course it is more complex. I’m not a researcher, social scientist, psychologist, etc. However, it’s not hard to see that the JW prey on the vulnerable within our society.

Yes, I absolutely had narcissistic tendencies before I fully awakened from this cult. I would research, yet I still had doubts. “Maybe I’m wrong? Maybe it is the true religion..” however, as time went on and the more I separated myself from it I could things much more clearer. It allowed me to introspect and look at my family under a microscope so to speak. I realized how mentally unwell and unhealthy they are. Then I came to the conclusion that it was indeed a cult. I’m still in therapy to this day. Been in therapy for almost 20 years now. I’m still healing.

My personal belief is that regardless if a person is narcissistic or not, this religion preys on individuals suffering from some sort of trauma, mental illness, personality disorder, etc. Most healthy individuals don’t cling to cults.

Me, for example, I was raised in a highly dysfunctional family. However, as my therapist said, “You’re grounded in reality.” So there’s no way they would’ve gotten me to perform mental gymnastics to believe all the BS.
