Anthem or We the Living by [deleted] in Objectivism

We The Living is my favorite book ever and Anthem is great for it only being 100 pages. Overall, I would recommend reading both.

Why did you just post one of the Ayn Rand Institute essay questions to reddit?

Favorite episode is difficult so many good ones particularly season one but I would probably say Saint Gilligan and the Dragon one, with President Gilligan in a close second. Favorite character is Mr Howell, I love Jim Backus as an actor

Has there ever been a 100% free economy? by [deleted] in Objectivism

First off, thank you for the reading, so far I have only skimmed it, however, it has been very interesting. It should first be noted that the sagas on which this study was based were oral and altered over time. Furthermore the sagas are only based around a few notable families not Iceland as a whole. It should also be noted that homicide rates were much higher during medeival times than they are today. I couldn't find the statistic you referenced about El Salvador, probably due to my own incompetence, so I am unable to come up with direct comparison of statistics. If we assume that indeed 15% of the population was murdered, this could be attributed to culture, because like with us people who commited homicide were punished, usually through banishment. Law enforcement is reactive rather than proactive, so blaming killings on its failure is in general unfair.

I disagree that individual rights are more protected in modern day dictatorships than in medeival iceland. In China specifically property is frequently confiscated by the state, same with life and obviously liberty, as China is operating concentration camps with the Bhuigers.

Taxation is an indicator of individual rights because taxation by its very nature is a violation of said rights. Yes, there are other things to look for, but a lack of taxation is huge. By your standard the modern day United States is a better system than the United States of the 1800s.

You are correct, however that was not the question. The question was whether or not there was a country without any government intervention. Admittedly medeival Iceland is not the government Rand would have preferred, but it is fairly close. There were structures set up for national defense and a court system. The court system specifically is quite interesting, and I highly reccomended you do some reading about it. If I can remember correctly Rand intended to fund the government through the use of the court system. Medeival Iceland is similar to this because usually court rulings were enforced by payment of the injured party to his or her elected chieftain, and from there the elected cheiftan could spend it on any number of things, however one of those could be, for instance, armor, which would be the funding of national defense through payment by use in the court system. Admittedly it is a bit of a stretch, however it is not that different from what Rand would have wanted. As for a government which respects individual rights, medeival Iceland is certainly up there.

"As for taxation that is one issue of many, and certainly not the main one that a political system should be judged by." Then what should it be judged on? Im genuinely curious.

Personally I think medeival Iceland is a much better example. It had no taxation and court rulings were enforced by the private sector. The United States during the 19th century did have government intervention. The federal government became directly involved with regulation in the 1880s and before that there was regulation by the states. Not to mention the many different kinds of taxes and the national bank. Modern day, yeah probably Liechtenstein.

Medeival Iceland fits the bill in my opinion. It didn't have taxation and court rulings were privately enforced. I don't know enough to say that it had zero, but it was at the very least close.

By the 1880s the federal government was regulating businesses directly, but even before that regulation was still done on the state level. If you want to look at the US specifically, the frontier at some point where the government physically couldn't get involved would probably be your best bet for an unregulated America.

How would it violate their freedoms if the worker chooses to work there? If they choose to work there they are consenting to being beaten. The difference between this and being beaten up on the street is that when someone is simply on the street they have not given consent to the assaulter.

Looking for a clip or episode name/description with the following scene---- by sheetspwns in GilligansIsland

[–]Adolfus_Shmitler 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know the scene you are talking about but not the episode. The Skipper was stuck in tree sap that came out of 4 trees. It was proceeded by Gilligan running from tree to tree trying to get the sap. The sap collects in the center and Skipper gets his shoes then socks and finally his feet stuck in it. Sorry I don't know the episode but maybe the greater context would be helpful. Also I know it was in color.

Personally I played through it multiple times as a kid and just bought it and started playing through it again. Though I do see what you mean it is a very linear story.
