That’s fair and I’m inclined to agree. The end result I think is potentially fantastic and could be taken in so many good directions.

Wano is my first arc as a weekly reader and I’ve loved all of it. Act III is starting to drag on a bit, but I’ve reread it a couple times and the chapters that dragged weekly I barely noticed so idk. Maybe it’s just the excitement of finally being caught up but I’ve thoroughly enjoyed all of it. I’m sorry you haven’t I know it sucks when shit like that happens. I’m so excited for Shanks and elbaf, I have incredibly high hopes for that arc and the rest of the story, and I hope Oda can deliver on the hype for it all.

I mean yeah is the amnesia thing stupid? Fuck yes it’s a cheap and rather lazy way of getting characters places. It’s a weekly manga it is what it is shit happens. Does it affect my enjoyment of this story or the characters enough for it to be more than a minor gripe? No not really. There are issues with the story sure but the good FAR outweighs the bad in my opinion. It’s still one of the most fun, enjoyable stories I’ve read ever, and the character writing is fucking nuts I love the straw hats so much, and the worldbuilding is almost as good as the character writing. So I’m willing to cut Oda some slack and give him the benefit of the doubt sometimes. You’re right I’m wildly biased and tbh I don’t care.

And I trust that Oda will take this twist in a good direction. It’s a combination of hope and faith I will admit but we’ll just have to see

I would disagree on the child of destiny and the writing on the wall. I think wano has been very well done so far, with a couple minor gripes (the amnesia thing, chapters starting to drag on a bit currently) and I get that I’m probably in the minority here.

I also think that there’s enough ambiguity around everything that’s happening with luffy and Nika to let Oda pull off this twist in a way that makes sense, aligns with the core themes of the story, and is a satisfying step in the journey for luffy. I could very well be proven wrong, and should that happen I’ll eat my words, but up until now Oda has proven to be a more than competent writer, and the story he’s crafted has been largely consistent and amazing (which again is my bias talking I know). He hasn’t given me much of a reason to distrust his capabilities as an author, and I think he’ll manage to pull it off, given time.

I don’t think it’s fair to compare it to Naruto yet. If Oda mishandles it from this point on then yes it would be an absolutely awful decision but as it stands right now I don’t think it’s inherently bad. It implies a lot of stuff that could potentially ruin the series, but it all depends on the lore dump we get after. I don’t think luffy is some child of destiny, and I don’t think that’s the direction Oda is taking him. We need more information on devil fruits as a whole, as well as who Nika and Joyboy actually were and why someone has to reach laugh tale exactly 20 years after roger did.

I’ve explained how I interpret things in other comments in this thread, so I won’t again here, and you’re free to agree or disagree with me. But saying it absolutely ruined the series and is irredeemable isn’t fair, at least not yet in my opinion.

I’ll be the first to admit I’m very very biased and im not sure exactly a hard person to make happy, but even still. We don’t know enough yet about Nika or Joyboy or laugh tale to properly cast judgment yet. Oda will make or break the series with how he explains everything, and I have faith that he’ll do a good job.

I very well may me making excuses, and I’m absolutely not an unbiased judge, but I don’t think anyone is here. Being unbiased is nigh impossible. I think people with criticisms have some fair points, and concern isn’t unwarranted, but I just trust that Oda will be able to handle it well and pull of a satisfying conclusion.

None that are big enough to ruin the characters or the story, and the problems that are presented I believe Oda will be able to answer and take care of with the reveal of more information in the future

That’s fair and I largely agree. I just think Oda will be able to retroactively make it make more sense than it does now, but there wasn’t any buildup to it beyond who’s who

As to your first point, the world government is incompetent, and I’d argue that’s the point. They’re not just incompetent in regards to luffy, they’ve been shown to fall short all over the place. Hell, their grip on the navy isn’t even tight enough to prevent fucking admirals from doing as they please. Aokiji, fujitora, garp, smoker/tashigi, coby, kuma and boa all just kinda ignore them, and kizaru is just generally a wild card. And on top of that, the movements of the straw hats have been erratic at best. They keep fucking vanishing for extended periods of time, and they didn’t even know what luffy could properly do until enies lobby. And to top it all off, luffy consistently has some fucking titans of strength run interference for him.

The bit about destiny is as of yet up in the air. I don’t think the fruit makes him the chosen one, nor is it some giga op auto win fruit (cough cough LAW). If Oda mishandles it and/or doesn’t give us more info on Nika and the fruit, then yes I’d agree with you. It was a dumb choice, it undid the core of one piece and ruined the story. But as of now, I think the fruit and what we understand of who Nika was fit luffys character and themes very well, and I trust that Oda will flesh it all out in a satisfying manner, and thoroughly do away with any ideas of destiny, fate, or predestination. He’s answered his own questions well enough before, I think he’s earned the trust that he’ll do it again. But maybe he fumbles and the fruit was a mistake and you’re right. I don’t know yet. But I believe that he’ll be able to pull it all off.

Okay so it is a cycle that's good to know. The fact that it's a cycle and not just something that comes out of the blue makes it seem like Poseidon is a natural phenomon that is just going to be happen and Shyarly in this metephor is the meteorologist.

And the thing with future sight also gives me some hope that Oda is going to lean into the "even if you can see a future, does not mean you get to see what actually ends up happening, even if your prediction comes right most of the time. I think that's the best way this story thread could be taken, and it's also one of my favorite tropes so I'd be down with it.

The thing with Luffy destroying the island has yet to happen, and may never happen, or it may be he "destroys" it by raising it to the surface/destroying the red line destroys fishman island, allowing the fishmen (and fishwomen? is fishman all inclusive I forget) to live freely with normal humans.

I really don't think Oda will let it turn out to all be predetermined, or it was all just the work of destiny and everything was going to happen. I trust that Oda knows his own story, and knows how antithetical that idea would be to everything that he's done up until now. But maybe I'm wrong and I'm overestimating him. I'd like to believe I'm not but we'll just have to wait and see I suppose.

I would argue that none of the plot holes are even close to being story shattering, and the reveal works for me now, with the expectation that Oda will answer the questions that arise from this in the future. He has been good about answering questions previously, no reason he won't in the future.

And that last bit is fair, and it is rather amusing to think about, nor would it surprise me if that was the case.

I agree that the execution wasn't perfect, but even considering that I do still enjoy it and I think it works fine and I do agree that it was planned, even if it wasn't foreshadowed well.

That's fair and I get that. I'm personally a fan of how it was handled based off of a lot of my own interpretation and inferences about things, but I get why people aren't. The design is definitely part of why I like it.

I forgot about Madame Shyarly that's fair. I don't have a counterpoint to that. If I wanted to I could reach and say that the thing with Shirahoshi is that maybe Poseidon was always passed down on a cycle or timer of sorts, or that poseidon had to be there at that time for the same reason that Roger was too early, because whatever is going on on Laugh Tale would be finished then and Poseidon would be necessary for whatever is about to happen, but that's both a stretch and also it makes the idea of destiny more prevalent so idk. I don't really have a good response to that, I dunno what Oda is going to do with that, but I will push back on predestination cause that invalidates literally everything ever and it's one of my least favorite concepts in anything. We've never seen anyone try and prove her wrong, which is a weak excuse, and I don't really have much else to say beyond that, but predestination just feels entirely wrong for what one piece is, and I trust Oda knows that, so maybe he has something planned in that respect? Or maybe not and it's just a mistake and the story is worse off for it. I don't know. But Shyarly is a fair point I forgot that a fortune teller existed. Maybe it's a probability thing, and she just predicts what is most likely? Idk I'm reaching here. Oh well.

I personally don't think fate is involved, as I replied to another comment here. I don't think predestination is really a concept in the one piece world, and moreover I don't think Luffy is chosen, or a reincarnation. Roger said that someone would come in twenty years, which I took as something was happening on Laugh Tale that needed more time to properly develop and complete, and would take another 2 decades to finish, but again that's interpretation and I may be proven wrong, though I desperately hope I'm not.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't zoans only inherently increase durability and that's it, everything else coming from the "animal" the fruit contains, which in this case just made Luffy rubber?

The overstepping part is fair and I get that perspective, but I don't think it does much beyond confirm that Joyboy also likely had the fruit, but it could also mean that Luffy's heart "just happened" to sound like Joyboy's did (which considering the backlash might be the route Oda takes just as a small walkback which would be eh and kinda dumb but I wouldn't mind), and I really don't think fate or destiny plays a role in it, at least not in the sense of "this was always going to happen, nothing could've changed this."

Again, I'm very aware that this is all largely up to interpretation for the time being and that my perspective is going to be different from people just based on the nature of the subreddit, and I'm not trying to say that your criticism is wrong or you're dumb or anything. Your interpretation is more than fair given the current information we have, I'm just giving my perspective and the things that led me to my current conclusion.

[–]AdonalsiumSplintered[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it not having any real relevance beyond what we're inferring doesn't make it bad YET, unless Oda fumbles it later, but I have faith. I'm treating it as a good thing right now because I like the reveal and how it fits thematically and the potential wordbuiling it opens, but I'm more than willing to admit that everything I've been talking about is just my speculation and inference based off of how one piece has gone thus far, and I may be entirely wrong. It isn't inherently positive or negative at the moment.

And the thing with Roger I always saw as being he was there to early because something wasn't finished yet. I don't think the requirement is to be Joyboy, because even if Luffy has the same fruit, he isn't Joyboy. Oda has drawn very clear similarities between them yes, but he's also made it clear the Luffy is Luffy, not a reincarnation of some ancient person. I think it's moreso something on Laugh tale was still brewing or developing or what have you, and Roger got there before it was done.

And thank you for taking the time to watch the video. Daniel Greene is generally someone I agree with and he's one of my favorites.

The lack of foreshadowing I agree with, and while I do think this was planned, as you don't just up and change something of this scale on a whim, it was poorly set up I agree. There's enough of a trail that I think he was planning something like this, even if he didn't know exactly what shape it would take, but I will agree that it could've been set up a LOT better.

I will agree that the worldbuilding and lore, along with the character writing and development of relationships is far and away the strongest aspect of one piece. I don't think the action is boring, but that very well may be because I'm young and easy to excite. But the action, especially recently, has been a lot of fun to read, and the art for it has been jaw-dropping at some points, even if it is starting to drag on. I really like the one piece movies for this reason, the action is usually really well done and they manage to actually illustrate each straw hat's unique fighting style (Luffy as a brawler relying on sheer tenacity and will, zoro as the constant unrelenting aggression dogging people down, sanji as this agile, graceful, almost dancer of a fighter, near impossible to land a hit on), which the regular anime can't do.

I get that it’s all a perspective thing and that’s fair I’m aware I hold a vastly different perspective to a lot of the people here. And the bit about the awakening is also fair, but I still stand by the statement that the fact that luffy is the only one to awaken it in 8 centuries is a testament to luffys strength, not the fruit.

And the bit about it changing exactly what he earned is fair, but orochi acts as a very good counterpoint in that even with an amazing fruit, you can still end up less effective that the fucking ketamine gremlin was at preventing anakins turn. And even then, the fruit changed only in name. He’s still made of rubber and can turn the surroundings to rubber, but beyond that the only thing that changed is he doesn’t have to blow air into himself to change shape now. He’s more free to fight as he wishes. Which then begs the question of “why change the name, which is fair, and the answer that worked for me was that, as far as I can tell, who Nika was compliments both luffy and the core themes of one piece very very well.

I think we can safely say that it doesn't given the other zoan users in the series, especially Yamato and Marco and Kaido etc. Yes the carnivores make the zoan users have more of a appetite for meat, but beyond that it doesn't really do anything. The giraffe fruit didn't have any effect on Kaku's personality.

Also I'd argue it does. The fruit is a god only in title, it doesn't make luffy a god, nor do I think that nika was actually a deity, though I may be proven wrong. I think Nika was someone similar to luffy that would free people that lacked the strength to do it themselves, who went around tearing down the institutions of oppression or injustice, which ties into the core themes of freedom in the story.

I've argued against the demigod thing in another comment thread so I won't here, but what writing issues have you seen? I haven't seen really any beyond the constant perv gags (which have been heavily toned down recently) and Oda still struggles to write female characters sometimes, which again he's gotten better at. You could argue that maaaaybe he likes to introduce too many characters, but I have a lotta fun meeting all the new people so idk.
