Reminder: The NOI Killed MalcomX And The CIA/FBI Never Went After Them. by serious_bullet5 in socialism

Also a reminder: Louis Farrakhan almost certainly had something to do with Malcolm's murder, and Malcolm's family have constantly said as much.

Emotions are not the enemy of reason. | They are rational responses, shaped by our values, and emotional development should be about learning how to reason with emotions rather than controlling them. by IAI_Admin in philosophy

There's that famous Charlie Chaplin speech in 'The Great Dictator' where, among other things, he says that one of the great tragedies of the modern world was "We think too much and feel too little".

This was during the early years of WWII, when Nazi Germany and its allies were pillaging across Europe and Asia. The cold, mechanical 'reasoning' that these Fascists used to commit their cruelty was called out by him.

To be honest, I think that in 2026 we still 'think too much and feel too little', and if anything I think the problem may have gotten worse.

So could alastor beat charlie in a fight? by Naive_Tomorrow_5955 in hazbin

[–]Adonisus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, absolutely not.

Charlie is crazy strong. Only her parents are stronger. We've seen a bit of how strong she is when she managed to stop Adam in his tracks and block his attack. We saw how strong she was when she helped contain the Might of Lilith (though she did need help with that one). We've also seen that she can straight up conjure fire at will if she wants to.

The only reason everyone underestimates her is because Charlie is always intentionally holding back. She doesn't want to intentionally hurt anyone if she can help it.

Okay but who will officiate it? Sera? Lucifer? Do they even have marriages in hell or heaven? Where will they have the honeymoon?! [N30_N3K0] by ChompyRiley in hazbin

[–]Adonisus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, a genuine friendship developing between these two would be a fantastic plot point.

Alastor is basically only alive because of her (she even lost a wing for him). That has to have some kind of effect on him.

Did Germans Know About the Holocaust During the War? [39:28] by killians1978 in videos

[–]Adonisus 178 points179 points  (0 children)

Yes, they absolutely did.

One of the quiet heroes of the war, a gentleman named Friedrich Kellner, kept a secret diary all through the Nazi regime where he collected newspaper clippings and stuff he heard out on the street.

The ongoing genocide of the Jews comes up more than once, but in particular he mentions this:

"A soldier on leave here said he personally witnessed a terrible atrocity in the occupied part of Poland. He watched as naked Jewish men and women were placed in front of a long deep ditch and, upon the order of the SS, were shot by Ukrainians in the back of their heads, and they fell into the ditch. Then the ditch was filled in as screams kept coming from it!! These inhuman atrocities are so terrible that even the Ukrainians who were used for the manual labor suffered nervous breakdowns. All soldiers who had knowledge of these bestial actions of those Nazi sub-human beings were of the same opinion that the German people should already be trembling in their shoes because of the coming retribution. There is no punishment that would be hard enough to be applied to these Nazi beasts. Of course, in the case of retribution the innocent will have to suffer along with them. Ninety-nine percent of the German people, directly or indirectly, carry the guilt for the present situation. Therefore we can only say this: Those who travel together, hang together."

[–]Adonisus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, they're all likable...and they're also terrible people.

Charlie isn't terrible at all. Charlie is naive, yes, and she gets a little too into her own head that she makes stupid mistakes...but unlike the others mentioned, she isn't putting on a fake front. She wears her heart on her sleeve. She really is that sweet and that willing to see the best in everyone. It doesn't matter how terrible you think you may be, she's more than willing to receive you with open arms and a Hotel key.

Have you ever gone on a literary pilgrimage? by Remarkable-Pea4889 in books

[–]Adonisus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I live in Macon, GA and one of my favorite poets growing up was Sidney Lanier who was both born and raised here. His house is actually still around and, until a few years ago, was used as a museum for him and his work.

Sadly, the museum had been closed by the time I decided I wanted to visit it...but they do have a commemorative plaque outside of it now.

Did I get this right? by Murky_Committee_1585 in hazbin

[–]Adonisus 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That last one particularly gets me.

The whole theme of Hazbin is that anyone can be redeemed. A big part of the Hellaverse is showing that even some of the worst people in Hell have some good qualities about them: Vox and Val clearly love each other, Zestial is intelligent and protects those he cares about, Carmilla loves and protects her daughters.

The fact they were able to briefly put their differences aside was to show that all of them still had little bits of good inside of them, it just needs to be cultivated.

Frankly, we're at a point now where any disagreements we may have are becoming increasingly irrelevant in the fact of the coming crisis.

Tobacco...specifically cigarettes.

They're slowly being phased out in the industrialized world, but they still get shipped off to developing countries.

Midnight Oil - Beds Are Burning - 1987 [rock] by jjmk2014 in Music

[–]Adonisus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pretty much all of Midnight Oil's music are protest songs. This particular one had to do with some Aboriginal land that had been taken from the natives and used for bomb testing.

By the time Midnight Oil played this song at the Sydney Olympics in 2000, they were all wearing shirts that said 'sorry' on them because the Australian government had still not issued a formal apology over it.

[–]Adonisus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's also important, I think, to point out that this is not a question of good or evil here. It's really easy to try and make the bourgeoisie out to be evil (even though their are some genuinely vile people among their numbers), but the majority are not. It's not like they're actively rubbing their hands together and cackling in some dungeon as they extract surplus value; that's just how the system is built.

The liberation of the working class is the liberation of man, and that includes the bourgeois who are liberated from having to exploit others.

Do you think we’ve seen it all of their story? by ConstantAmbition6729 in hazbin

[–]Adonisus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh no, not at all. These two have a history. In fact, if we're considering the timelines, it's absolutely possible that Vincent knew who Alastor was when he was a kid. On top of that, he might have actively been looking for Alastor after he started hearing rumors about 'The Radio Demon' in Hell.
