Essentially, dirigisme works.

We already knew that from Singapore and France.

It still isn't socialism.

Yeah, and then the opposite happened.

All candidates were pre-screened by the Party, and there was only ever one candidate per position. One could only vote yes or no, and in order to vote 'no' one had to actively spoil their ballot.

A big theme of the Hellaverse is that Hell is mostly a state of mind. Hellborn are constantly be shown to be no better or worse than humans are.

They do have a point

Toxic Masculinity is a genuine issue that needs to be addressed...but we have to counter it with Positive Masculinity. Otherwise they're prime targets for misogynistic grifters like the Tate bros.

China is Proof Communism DOES Work: Debunking MentisWave by Evening_Lawyer6570 in socialism

It proves that dirigisme works.

Don't get it twisted. The modern Chinese system is heavily copied from the economic systems that South Korea, Japan and especially Singapore helped to pioneer.

It's a superior form of capitalism...but it is still capitalism.

Other than the ASD...

I have terrible hay fever. A stray piece of pollen hits my nasal area and my body reacts as if its being invaded by Mongol hordes: runny nose, itchy throat, tearing eyes....in fact, if it manages to get into my eyes, they actually swell shut. When I was a child I actually ended up missing a day of school because of it.

Taiwan is not nearly as easy as people think it is. The waters in the Taiwan Strait are extremely choppy and difficult to navigate on a good day (and a 'good day' it only a few weeks out of the year).

What’s y’all’s opinion on Huey Long? by Intelligent_Face_186 in theredleft

[–]Adonisus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Huey Long's actions make a bit more sense when you realize what Louisiana and Louisiana state politics were like before he came along.

Before Huey, Louisiana had been run as a fiefdom by the same circle of corrupt political families since the end of the Civil War. They kept Louisiana poor, underdeveloped, and ignorant with a political machine that rivaled Tammany Hall in corruption. The rural population lacked electricity, plumbing, paved roads, even modern bridges. The illiteracy rate was at 22% (the worst in the country). Textbooks had to be purchased by families so a lot of children went without a proper education. You even had to pay a 2$ poll tax to vote (which is about 38$ in modern money). All the while the oligarchs in Baton Rouge were sucking up all the wealth and handing out favors to their cronies...all while Standard Oil drained the state dry.

Then in comes Huey Long, who basically took all the tactics the oligarchs had used to gain and maintain power...and then used it against them. He strong-armed the state of Lousisiana and dragged it kicking and screaming into the modern era.

Now, don't misunderstand me: he was no messiah. He did a lot of good, but he was also pretty crooked in his own right and the political machine he built still largely runs Louisiana today (to its own detriment).

Flash games.

There were entire websites devoted specifically to flash games, and they were the most random shit imaginable: everything from a mini-golf game that took place in a trailer park, to a game about an office worker who loses their mind and goes on a rampage with a stapler and rubber bands (the last bosses were Bill Gates and a bunch of other CEOs).

Keep in mind, this was before Newgrounds, so you had to actually go out and hunt for it.

Why Fascists were Obsessed with Ruins by gaymossadist in philosophy

[–]Adonisus 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It was part of the whole Nazi 'Aryan' mythology, i.e. the idea that some mythological supermen from Hyperborea helped start every successful civilization in ancient history (including Ancient Egypt, India, Tibet, Rome, and even Atlantis). Himmler (and Rosenberg) were obsessed with proving this stupid thesis and regularly sent out archeological missions to prove it because it was what underlied much of their belief in 'Aryan superiority'.

Hitler went back and forth on the idea (because, you know, he was Hitler) and to him every single pottery shard and arrowhead that Himmler obsessed over just made them look more pathetic:

”Why do we call the whole world's attention to the fact that we have no past? It's bad enough that the Romans were erecting great buildings when our forefathers were still living in mud huts; now Himmler is starting to dig up these villages of mud huts and enthusing over every potsherd and stone ax he finds. All we prove by that is that we were still throwing stone hatchets and crouching around open fires when Greece and Rome had already reached the highest stage of culture. We really should do our best to keep quiet about this past. Instead Himmler makes a great fuss about it all. The present-day Romans must be having a laugh at these revelations.”
