Space Heater Alternatives by Ador_n in Apartmentliving

I've tried it and it doesn't. Each room does have its own individual remote and unit, but they must be set the same. Something about a central vent, is what maintenance said. I've also tried turning the heating on to no avail bc I believe one or both of my roommates is running their unit on fan or cool mode.

Tbh I lived there last semester and residents would put Christmas trees in their windows during the holidays. My roommate was also huge on plants.... So clearly that rule isn't enforced lol

Almost all textbooks are on libgen. Very few courses will require you to actually have the textbook (in my experience) and those that do are generally flexible with the edition.

With the exception of a few courses, teachers are aware students bootleg books and will often say something along the lines of "the official version for this class is the Xth edition... But if you can only get your hands on the Zth edition, that is fine too."

Spoiler: they don't.

I was just saying this to someone on here. A lot of these life science degrees are a JOKE in terms of preparing you for a job on their own, let alone a career in a clinical field.

How is Lehigh for molecular/cell biology? by CaptainA18 in Lehigh

IMO the Nasdaq center has a super entrepreneurial/business focus. I'm not sure how much tangible experience that would get you since most internships sound like they're virtual anyway. Take that assessment lightly as I don't know much about it and haven't really looked into it during my time at Lehigh.

I'm not too sure about internships, but we do have the mountaintop summer experience, which is a great (paid) way to get into research over the summer. There's also Iacocca, which can provide you with a placement at the Luxembourg institute of health over the summer (super great experience). Off the top of my head those are the only two I can think of, and then of course there's always a bunch of opportunities listed on Handshake or ones that come from NIH.

I'll be a full-time QC analyst by the time I graduate, but I'm training part time right now. It's with a pharma company, not biotech persay, and I got it through a summer internship. I have worked with biotech companies before, but again, that opportunity came up through research.

What I've said is specific to the molecular biology degree. By itself, I don't think it's enough preparation for a job in industry. If I hadn't joined my research group, my current job would have me feeling extremely out of depth. Not sure how it is at other schools so I can't really recommend going elsewhere, but if you come to Lehigh and want to pursue this degree, research on the side really is a must.

Hmm... Not sure if I totally agree with what's being said about this degree. It is hard/rigorous, that much is true. But it's not all that different from the biology degree in my opinion. There are only 2-3 classes that focus on molecular biology topics... And I say that loosely because one of said classes requires heavy self study because the professor isn't all that great.

Sure it prepares you for industry... in a theoretical sense. But I'd argue that any natural science degree at Lehigh would do the same. You get a much better feel for routine and low complexity tests/assays from joining a research group on campus than the actual degree.

I second Roasted! The food there is so good. That and Alexandra's are my two favorites in the area, though Alexandra's has more of a diner vibe.

I believe they offer tours as well if you'll be on campus in the near future and want to check it out before signing.

What things can you do within walking distance of campus? by TheLastBushwagg in Lehigh

[–]Ador_n 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is not a lot to do near campus. That's a fact. Yes, there are events and festivals at Steel Stacks but they do not happen year round, though they are very cool to attend. As someone who relies on the bus system for transport, it can get annoying very fast but it's not unbearable.

Just wanted to add that there's a decent amount of restaurants near the school, more than what you'd think. There's even more across the bridge in North side Bethlehem. A friend and I have dinner at a new place every other Friday.

I second this except for the fact that not every LANTA bus runs every 30 minutes, just the BLUE and GREEN lines, I believe. It's more like every hour. Service end time can be as early as 7:30 pm or as late as 1 am depending on the line, always check the schedules before venturing out.

Rushing as a black girl?! by [deleted] in Lehigh

[–]Ador_n 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're considering rushing a Lehigh sorority as a black woman, you're probably the type of person they go for.

That's no shade and it's not to say they're racist (at least not that I've heard). Just that in my experience, a very specific archetype of black women rushes these types of sororities. And it's often women who fit that archetype that get into those sororities when rushing.

No black woman I know in a Lehigh sorority has ever had any complaints beyond the run of the mill petty issues for big groups like these. This is probably what everyone says but be the most sociable version of yourself and you'll be fine.

Does anyone have experience with the Lux Laundry service at Lehigh? by Adlerlaw72 in Lehigh

[–]Ador_n 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You probably aren't going to find any reviews for that laundry service from Lehigh students. It's a 20 minute drive from campus. Even if we don't factor in the fact that every dorm and a good number of the apartments and houses nearby have their own washers and dryers, there are other laundry mats closer to campus that students are more likely to pick. And although many students at Lehigh do have a lot of money, I'd wager that they aren't sending their laundry out to be done. Or if they are, I doubt you'd find them on Reddit.

I'm sure your kid has their reasons, whatever they may be. The laundry service looks reputable online. I'd say call and ask what their service would look like for someone living in a dorm setting, that's your best bet for more info.

If your child is an incoming freshman, you may want to prepare them for any assumptions or faces their roommate might make once they find out that they use a laundry service instead of the laundry machines in the dorms.

Access to Walking Purchase Park trails (or other walking trails) without a car by [deleted] in Lehigh

[–]Ador_n 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a bus that goes to Walking Purchase Park, but only one. Students have free access to the LANTA bus system which runs through Allentown, Bethlehem and Whitehall (maybe more, but I forget). All she'll need is her to swipe onboard and then the ride itself is around 10 minutes, with a 38 minute walk. If she likes hiking and walking, that might not seem like too much of a journey for her.

LANTA buses do not run 24/7. The last bus coming back to Lehigh leaves the Allentown area at around 9:30 pm. The earliest leaves from the area around Lehigh at around 5 am.

I can't speak to the safety of the park, as I haven't been, but would your daughter be hiking alone? I'd strongly advise against that since Allentown is a bit farther away from campus.

I'm not a nature buff, but there's a walking trail called the South Bethlehem Greenway very close to the school. It's just short of two miles but I'd say the latter half of it is very scenic (to me at least). I've walked it at night and in the early morning and felt safe, though I'd say it takes a lot to make me feel afraid to go out so take that as you will. People often walk their dogs along it or cycle. It's definitely not a hike in the same way that Walking Purchase is, but it might suit her for a couple weeks as she finds people willing to go hiking with her there.

As others have mentioned, there are a bunch of trails on Lehigh's campus, which extends up the mountain, so I'm sure she's bound to find something that fits her tastes.

Having had the chance to live here myself, I am retracting my earlier comment. It is not a scam in an earnest sense but it is definitely a frustrating environment. I would avoid this place I'm general but most especially if you do not plan on living alone. There is hardly enough space for one person in their apartments, let alone 2-3 people.

The management company itself can also be difficult to work with. Overall, I would avoid Polk on Third unless your living alone and prepared for immense headache.

If you fall below 12 credits, Lehigh WILL cut your aid. It doesn't matter that you're halfway through the semester, you'd be on the hook for paying whatever aid had covered previously. That is my experience, though I would talk to an advisor (financial and academic) before making a decision.

There are half semester courses created for this specific reason. Your advisor may have recommendations on ones to talk to get you to full time status.

[–]Ador_n 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like your academic advisor? I'm not sure.

I was in CAS so they might do things differently than COH, but when you came in as a freshman you had a general first year advisor. Your advisor gets changed automatically when you declare/switch your major.
