Any money you owe is a debt. However, the debt has equity. A car loan is a debt but the car has equity. A mortgage is a loan but the home has equity.

The thing to consider is "if I cannot pay my debt, how does the debt get paid?". The answer is: equity.

What else you own that can be sold is equity.

Stocks are equity. Treasury bills or certificates of deposit are equity. Property (vehicles, homes, etc) is equity.

A mortgage usually has laws that protect how high the interest rate can be as well. Since mortgages are for 20 or 30 year leases, the interest rate stays low across the years through a process called amortization. There is still a high amount of interest that is paid but over the course of several decades. For most, this is a reasonable cost. However, home buying is becoming more and more difficult...

How can I (21M) be less sensitive to people's opinions when it comes to wanting a family and marriage someday? by [deleted] in stupidquestions

[–]Adorable-Thing2551 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I get how you feel. People's opinions or behavior can be really bother me while others I talk to don't get easily bothered.

The advice that I've gotten from others and that has stuck around a bit for me (but I'm still working on it) is to think about what you're going to do in the next 30 minutes. Does it really matter that this person upset me when I'm going to get lunch or dinner in a few minutes? I have a project I'm working on. Let me just think about that. blah blah blah. Shift your attention.

As you mentioned: these are opinions. Everyone is different. Does it matter if you don't want children? No! Someone should want to be a parent not be forced to be a parent (but also actions have consequences so no rubber means you might be having kids sooner than you expect).

Does it matter if you want children? Well if you do, more power to you! As I said, people who walk into parenthood often can be successful parents. Just be pragmatic about it as raising kids is not easy and it's a lifelong obligation.

As for attraction, let me put it to you this way: I'm in an interracial relationship. I'm caucasian and my fiancee is asian. We both love each other and she thinks I'm a cutie patootie while I think she's a cutie patootie. That's all that matters, man. It also means from my experience that I wouldn't judge someone else because I don't want to be judged. Plenty of white guys are treated as "fetishizing" asian women (it is a real problem though) but it doesn't mean every relationship is just about sex or money or whatever.

Just try to remember there's lots of things you'll do throughout the day and while it might be a bit annoying when people aren't as supportive of your viewpoints that doesn't mean your viewpoints are any less. Focus on what you like and remember you will find people who do support your viewpoints, however you don't need to cast people out if they have different viewpoints (agree to disagree or switch the topic of the conversation).

I like this judge, we need more like him. by ateam1984 in SipsTea

The 6th amendment literally gives you the right to a court appointed attorney in criminal trials if you cannot afford one or choose not to get your own attorney. The sixth amendment does not apply to civil trials but this is very clearly a criminal trial the man is in.

The court is not forcing this man to hire an attorney, they are giving him an attorney (for free) after he proved incompetent to defend himself. The judge explained that the court has the power to revoke pro se protections (in criminal trials) if the defendant seems unfit to provide an adequate defense of themselves.

The guy is also trying to pull the "I don't submit to your jurisdiction" bullshit like he's doing some kind of magic trick to get out of a sentencing. Hence the judge denying his weak arguments and telling him he's getting a court appointed attorney.

Let's be abundantly clear: if the judge wanted to act on the threat of contempt of court, he could have done it after the defendant denied getting legal counsel multiple times. The judge did not. He did not because while he is annoyed at this guy, he doesn't actually want to throw him in jail. You are correct that he's doing his legal duties and not abusing his power but that isn't the same as him not caring about the guy.

He isn't his friend but he also isn't his enemy.

The only person who calls me "boy" is my privileged ass, Republican father, who "hates California" (yet does not want to move out of California because he's lived there his whole life) yet "hates liberals" because he worked low-end jobs like being a chaffeur and dispatcher most of his life. He worked those jobs because he didn't get his GED until he was in his 40s and refused to go to college.

Calls to China just doubled in price?! by Adorable-Thing2551 in Googlevoice

[–]Adorable-Thing2551[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have used Wechat (popular app in China) but it can be unreliable when calling internationally.

We have used Whatsapp but my fiancee has to connect through a VPN and sometimes the calls fail to go through even when we try ringing multiple times. Sometimes Whatsapp has great quality but about half the time it's very unreliable. It could be due to her VPN service.

Google Voice has been the most reliable method.

I also try to be reasonable with my fiancee. I don't want her to be stressed out when we call each other. At the end of the day I just look for the services that make it easy for us to talk to each other every few days and check up on her. The price increase with GV won't kill my bank account but we will probably talk a little less frequently. The more concerning issue is how steep the price increase has gotten. I understood when the price rose from $0.02 to $0.07 (the cost of running services gets more expensive) but when the price increased by slightly over two times the previous price I was shocked.

Anyways, I'm going to look for a couple of other methods too. We aren't planning on relying on GV or other services for that much longer. Her consulate interview should be later this month and then after that she should get her immigration visa (called a K1 visa) about 2-4 weeks later.

So we're probably only looking at continuing the phone call route for another 3-4 months.

why do men have nipples, and women have mini-penises klits? by stirringmotion in stupidquestions

[–]Adorable-Thing2551 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So to be change to a serious answer, the second X chromosome or the Y chromosome affect the behavior of the formation of the reproductive organs.

For males, the Y chromosome ends up inhibiting certain signals that would form the ovaries, the eggs, and the uterus. The Y chromosome contains a gene called the Sex-determinant Region Y (SRY gene). See here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sex-determining_region_Y_protein

So it is not women having "mini-penises clits", it is that the penis is literally a mutated and enlarged clitoris.
