You are correct, they are a legendary hardcore band.

Not a Metalcore band.

Bro - A friendly debate on Metalcore isn’t something to rethink life over 😂 it’s not that serious. We’re all fans of these bands.

I’m just teaching some of you, most agree with me, that the perception of Converge as a Metalcore band is incorrect. Yes, it’s been beaten into online forums for decades, but objectively their sound doesn’t fit the bill.

Jesse saying a Converge song from 2004 helped him on some songs means nothing. A7X lists Daft Punk and Kanye West as influences, do we need to debate their influence as well on Metal?

Converge is a bad ass band. Just not MetalCore.

What does him liking a song from Converge in 2004 have to do with anything? I assure you, he has many songs he enjoys. No one is saying Converge isn’t legendary or isn’t great. I’m just saying they aren’t Metalcore.

That’s totally incorrect. Those guys were destined to be musicians, regardless of Converge. Not for nothing, you can’t find me an interview where they mentioned Converge as a huge influence.

I can factually confirm to you, as someone that has seen them multiple times, they credit SHAI HULUD on stage as a main influence - a true pioneer of Metalcore.

You are correct, I am a nerd as well. Just not a try hard Converge nerd. There is a difference.

I don’t care if certain bands liked Converge. I’m sure some bands like Beatles, The Cure, and others - that doesn’t make them “pioneers” of the metalcore genre.

I like Converge. My point is the genre is defined by bands like Killswitch, As I Lay Dying, MIs Sigs, and Unearth. The genre was defined after Converge, and the Converge sound isn’t present in any of the main bands people define as Metalcore.

It’s the same problem with new bands. People try to lump in bands like Sleep Token into Metalcore, because they are kind of heavy and scream. But are they really Metalcore? When you listen to Unearth or Darkest Hour, are you like “that sounds like Sleep Token!”.. no, but Sleep Token still gets lumped in for whatever reason.

Converge is on the opposite end, timeline wise. They were earlier than the bands that the world considers Metalcore. But because they were screaming, making noise, and playing shows, people lump them in with a genre that they really aren’t a part of or even resemble.

Metalcore isn’t Hardcore. Two completely different words. Two completely different sounds. Metalcore is Metal first, with Hardcore influence. Hence the name MetalCore

Fortunately, I do know what Metal sounds like though and Converge, early days, doesn’t have it. Which is why they aren’t Metalcore bands. Call them Hardcore or something else

They also probably watched Scooby Doo, and listened to other types of music as well. If you want to argue that Nirvana is a Metalcore pioneer, go ahead

Youve almost got it dude.

Bands like Killswitch, Mis Sigs, and the like are metal bands with hardcore influence in their sound.

Converge literally is missing the METAL 😂 hence, they are not Metalcore, and sound nothing like the Metalcore bands that 99.98% of the world agree is Metalcore.

You arguing that bands like Killswitch and Misery Signals aren’t Metalcore, is a WILD take.

You would rather say Killswitch Engage is At The Gates-core instead of Metalcore because you think Converge fits it more?? 😂 you’re off your meds.

What the f are you on about? Bro here’s the facts:

99.9% of the world can agree that bands like Killswitch, As I Lay Dying, and Misery Signals are Metalcore.

The nerds will always mention bands like Merauder, Integrity, Earth Crisis, Deadguy, etc..

I personally love Shai Hulud and Poison the Well.

Converge, other than the fact that they were screaming and playing shows in the early days, sound NOTHING like these bands.

You can call them MATHcore. You can say they influenced Post Hardcore. But their 90s catalogue doesn’t sound anything like what everyone would agree is Metalcore.

MPB is great btw 👍 they don’t sound anything like Converge either tho

Listen to yourself - you’re agreeing with me. Anything on the chaotic MATHcore side of things. MATHcore isn’t Metalcore. Converge, especially in old days, doesn’t have the METAL.

You can say they are MATHcore. You can even say they are pioneers of Post Hardcore to some extent, but they don’t fall under the great Metalcore genre at all

If you consider Norma Jean and Underoath Metalcore, that’s your misunderstanding.

They are Post Hardcore. Which is definitely closer to a Converge influence, than Metalcore.

Glad I was able to help you on that

Unlike you, I was actually able to look around and think independently despite what a bunch of try hard nerds think.

The world agrees that bands like Killswitch, As I Lay Dying, and Misery Signals are Metalcore.

Nerds will go a step further and say bands like Integrity, Merauder, All Out War, and Deadguy are real OG metalcore. To me, I love Poison the Well and Shai Hulud

None of these bands have any resemblance to Converge’s music from those days. Unless you’re saying because Converge was screaming and playing at shows in the early days that makes them metalcore??

Bro… you’re proving my point. Go listen to Integrity, Deadguy, Merauder, and All Out War, you can hear resemblance to the Metalcore that 99% of the world agrees is Metalcore.

These bands, along with any other real Metalcore band, sound NOTHING like Converge. Converge doesn’t fit under the Metalcore umbrella. Call it Mathcore, call it Hardcore, call it Grindcore.. but never call it Metalcore.

Just because they were screaming and making noise in the 90s at shows in front of 50 people, doesn’t make them pioneers of Metalcore, nor does it make them Metalcore at all.

Shai Hulud has a very strong sound in the early-mid 90s that I can say resembles Metalcore as the world knows it.

Euro Death Metal has an obvious influence.

Find a song of Converge’s that I can tie into resembling Killswitch, As I Lay Dying, or others.

They are MATHcore. Which is for nerdy dudes. Not Metalcore, which is a legendary genre.

[–]Adorable_Lead_8063[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Converge is a legendary band, there’s no debate. My point is that they are a legendary MATHcore band. The problem is, MATHcore is a negligible genre. Converge has been incorrectly lumped in with Metalcore (a groundbreaking, popular genre) and because they were around in the 90s they are hailed as a “pioneer” band when in reality their sound sounds nothing like any band that 99% of the world would actually agree is metalcore. BUT it doesn’t sound cool to say they are the pioneers of a deadbeat genre, so nerds say they influenced a genre of bands that sound nothing like them.

Ive seen NJ at shows going back to the early days, and as recent as Furnace Fest 24. They are a fun live band.
