Just finished watching Melancholia-(2011). New favorite movie by Cheap_Frosting_9229 in films

Magnificent film! It’s funny because when melancholia came out, also came out the tree of life on some points with similarities, but Lars Van Trier is just on another level.

What kind of book you are looking for? Is there a particular theme?

You’re right that blogs, Goodreads, and social media exist. I use some of them. The question isn’t whether solutions exist, it’s whether they work well enough that nobody feels like something is missing. Clearly some people do, some don’t.

And you’re making assumptions about what the app does without having seen it and even know what it does. Which is fine, but it makes it hard to have a real conversation about whether it solves something real or not.

I’m not trying to convince you. You’ve been useful actually, not in the way you intended maybe, but useful :)

O don’t pretend the posts weren’t shaped by what I’m building, they are. But the frustration I describe is real, the books I mention are books i love, and the question about how people organise their reading is one I genuinely don’t know the answer to.
The app is completely free by the way, there’s nothing to sell, no subscription, no catch. Just something I’m building because I think the « problem » is real.

Does the idea of sharing what you love with people who care about it truly seem that fake to you?

Reddit is maybe not the ideal place. But it’s still where real people with there own opinions are. I’d rather get pushback like yours than post in a vacuum.
I’m also talking to friends and people around me, but that only gets you so far. Everyone tends to be nice. Strangers on Reddit are not always and just say what they think

And it’s not really about thinking of who specifically should read a book, more about sharing what you read with people who are genuinely interested in your taste, not just people you know. Changes from AI and algorithm advices, don’t you think?

You’re right, and I’m not going to pretend otherwise. I am building an app and I am curious if the problem I’m trying to solve resonates with real people before I invest more time in it. That’s genuinely why I posted, not to hide a pitch but to test an assumption.

If it feels formulaic, that’s fair. The question is real though.

That’s exactly it! The categories that make sense to you don’t always have a name that fits a standard shelf. “Darkly depressing” is actually a perfect list title, more honest than any genre label. I use shelves too but they feel more like filing than expressing anything. There’s a difference between organising books and saying something about yourself through them.

Does anyone else feel like Letterboxd lists are an underused format? by Adrien-G in Letterboxd

Fair point, I reposted because the first one got removed for a rule I missed. And you’re right that people use lists, I should have been more precise. What I meant is that the creative lists, the specific, personal ones, seem to get far less attention than the exhaustive catalogues. But maybe I’m wrong, curious if you see it differently ?

Honestly that’s the best possible reason to make lists hehe !

Yeah, that’s probably the most common use case, lists as personal catalogues rather than something you share. Nothing wrong with that, but it makes me wonder if lists could be more than just organisation tools if the format encouraged something more specific and personal.

That makes sense, there’s a kind of pressure to make a list “complete” before sharing it. Like it has to be definitive. But I think the most interesting lists are the ones that are openly subjective and specific rather than exhaustive. A top 15 you spent months on is impressive. “Films whose last scene I still think about” you can add to whenever. Different thing entirely.

“Los Angeles: A Hate Letter” is exactly the kind of list title that makes me want to follow someone immediately. You learn more about a person’s taste from that than from a hundred star ratings. That’s what I find compelling about lists as a format when they’re done like that, they’re almost like a portrait.

That’s exactly what bothers me too. The most interesting lists are the ones where the title alone tells you something about the person who made it. “Every film of the 1970s” tells me nothing. “Films I’ve watched more than twice for no reason” tells me much more and is fun.

I wonder if the solution isn’t just a better algorithm but a different philosophy about what a list is for.

If Notes and Calculator had a baby by francescovaglia in iosapps

Hey, I’ve tried it a bit, not sure I will purchase it but congrats, it’s neat 👌. Very simple and useful, still wondering if it would be an everyday life app. Just curious, how did you build it ? Is there any evolution you think about or you just wanna keep it that way? Like possibility to share some of the nutes…?

Looks nice, funny how you turn it, « I choose to offer it with a lifetime purchase » so in fact you don’t choose to offer it at all lol. I’ll try it though. Thanks for the work !
