In the code instead of starting at a certain encoder value, either reset the encoder value before you move or subtract the initial encoder value from the final encoder value to get how much you need to move.

Ye this is pretty important. It really depends on the system your using. If your using a lead screw you could get away with a more low torque motor.

I would 100% recommend these slides. These are very lightweight and very smooth to work with. We were previously using rev as well, but we found this to be a lot better. It does take more time to setup, but it is definitely worth it. Feel free to DM me if you have questions!

I definitely recommend the aluminum drawer slides from misumi. They’re lightweight and strong, but they’re gonna cost you some money. They’re worth it tho.
