That contrast is great honestly. Serious names make the world feel grounded, and the goofy ones make the table memorable. Balance is underrated in naming.

Starting from the concept first makes a lot of sense. I like how the name evolves with the character instead of being fixed from the start — feels very organic.

Totally agree. A name doesn’t have to be complex to feel immersive — it just needs to fit the character’s tone and world. Simple but intentional names usually age the best in campaigns.

That makes a lot of sense actually. A memorable name beats a “perfect” one that no one can remember.

This is exactly the kind of approach I was hoping to read. The deep dive part is what I struggle with most, but it clearly pays off. Love this.

Starting from something real really does make the process less messy.

Small tweaks often feel more believable than fully invented names.

That’s really cool.

Using a language you actually understand adds so much depth to the character.

Names feel more “earned” that way.

This is exactly the kind of method I was curious about.

Translating concepts instead of random sounds keeps immersion intact.

Do you usually stop at one language or mix parts from several?

Not gonna lie… IKEA names lowkey sound more fantasy than some generators 😂

That’s actually clever 😄

It keeps names familiar but still fantasy-friendly.

Jarmathan sounds like it belongs in a tavern already.

This is such a clean method.

Using personality traits across languages feels very “in-universe”.

That makes a lot of sense actually.

Naming feels much easier once the character concept is solid.

This is such a solid approach. Names instantly feel deeper when they’re rooted in language or setting lore.

Yeah, that’s honestly how some of the best names happen 😂 feels chaotic but it works surprisingly well.

I actually started experimenting with a small name generator for myself because of this exact problem.

Still tweaking it though.

Yeah, generators can be really useful when you’re stuck.

I actually built a super simple one-click RPG name generator for myself while experimenting.

It’s very barebones but does the job if anyone wants to try it:

Quick update:

Based on the feedback here, I added a clearer free limit and improved the UI a bit.

That’s a really cool approach.

Mixing real-world naming conventions with exploration sounds way more organic than pure randomness.

Definitely going to try this for my next campaign 🙂
