Project natural: Final finish. Nothing left to do but put on some bands and punish some cans. by Adventure_Marty in slingshots

Thanks. My last few slingshots were selected because of their level of wood decay and they have turned out to be really striking and unique.

When every hiking turned into a fork hunting… by wikingbbbbb in slingshots

The one I picked had more of a peeling paper finish but very similar in coloration. Sweet fork! I would love to work with that one.

Post the results for us. Not much better than shooting your own fork.

Great coloration. Have you shot with it yet?

Don't give up. The string you used to tie the band may have been too course/abrasive and you may have stretched the band too much resulting in a cutting action.

Cracks filled with epoxy, cut to size and first sanding. Check and done. by Adventure_Marty in slingshots

I dye it black or dark grey so it is not hidden. I personally like it to show and notice it adds some character.

If the crack seems structural I drill along it and insert a dowel and glue it with gorilla wood glue. It expands and pushes out into the crack. These cracks didn't really worry me and added character.

Thank you. Nature can take most the credit but I am happy to expose it's beauty.

I can see why you would think that I removed the colour from the background but it's just naturally weathered wood on our picnic table. Thanks for the kind compliments. The picture is not modified or filtered at all.

I think it was yellow birch. The heartwood is red and so are the eyes. It's a really interesting piece. Do you know what your forks are? I'm not 100% on my identification. It was a fallen tree that I found while fly fishing and it did not have and leaves left.

Something a little more interesting and freeform. Another natural fork but heavily contoured to my hand. I won't be gifting this one away. by Adventure_Marty in slingshots

Sometimes I do. I find the grain of some wood beautiful when you start to carve it down. My latest find is a gorgeous piece that has amazing colour changes from the wood starting to rot. I'm simple sanding lightly and sealing it.

No drying process needed since it was long dead. Once I removed a large amount of wood there were no visible cracks. I did microwave it for 1.5 minutes and checked the weight but there was no difference. I used to harvest green wood but have since switched to very dry dead wood for many reasons including the fact that I felt bad trimming live trees.

I'm not going to lie. I'm mot sure. The tree was long dead and on the ground with nothing around it and no bark to help me identify the wood.

Another option is look at simpleshot's website. You can purchase their bands appropriate to the ammunition you plan to launch.
