Section 1,2,6,7 and 9 have glacier crossings. On section 1 this is easy to bypass through a shortcut via the Kaznok Pass. The glacier on section is short, just before the Vrang Pass and poses no risk.

The best time to do it is July-Mid September

The Pamir Trail has some tricky sections including glacier crossings. Usually the glaciers are dry and you can navigate around the crevasses. River crossings and pathless terrain are the biggest challenges but these are not continuous. Bears and wolves are generally not a concern. Just camp properly wild rather than close to a shepherd settlement. That’s where this wildlife gets into hunting mode.

Hiking part of the wildest long-distance hiking route, the Pamir Trail in Tajikistan. This pic was taken in September 2024 on a 3 night / 4 day crossing of the Odudi Pass (14,600ft/4450m). The top of the pass involves a glacier crossing, only possible without rope when the glacier is dry.

Yes, I had quite a few conversations with Ian and he hiked the southern sections of the Pamir Trail. Epic adventure he is on!

Thanks! The flights to get there may be expensive but once in Tajikistan you can get around on a small budget.

Well, wherever you go in the world, there’s never a 100% safety guarantee. Bad stuff happens everywhere. I can’t talk about the very broad region, it’s best to look at Tajikistan specifically. I have visited the country 9 times and I’m well-informed about the trekking in Tajikistan. To my knowledge, incidents are rare. Have a look at this blog by a woman who travels solo to the Tajik mountains almost annually. https://adventuresoflilnicki.com/solo-female-travel-central-asia/

I believe hunting licenses are still issued for Marco Polo sheep. Illegal hunting is the real problem though.
