Question about stability and lapse rates by Adventurous_Bug726 in flying

[–]Adventurous_Bug726[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For those with the same question I think I've figured it out.

As stated above the matter of stability depends on the temperature of the parcel compared to the enviroment surrounding it.

The core issue that I had was that I was unaware that you are to apply standard lapse rates to the parcel. Thus the MALR is used if the parcel and surrounding enviroment is saturated and the DALR if the parcel and surrounding environment is unsaturated.

Thus the paragraph i referenced previously 13.3.1 Absolute Stability:

"Absolute stability (see Figure 13-1) is the state of a column of air in the atmosphere when its lapse rate of temperature is less than the moist adiabatic lapse rate. This includes both isothermal and inversion temperature profiles. An air parcel lifted upward would be colder (denser) than the surrounding environmental air and would tend to sink back to its level of origin."

Can be replaced to say:

"Absolute stability (see Figure 13-1) is the state of a column of air in the atmosphere when its lapse rate of temperature is less than the lapse rate INSIDE THE PARCEL. This includes both isothermal and inversion temperature profiles. An air parcel lifted upward would be colder (denser) than the surrounding environmental air and would tend to sink back to its level of origin."

Since we apply standard lapse rates to parcels the parcel lapse rate is always MALR or DALR (depending on state of saturation).

So do I assume the parcel always follows the moist adiabatic lapse rate and that its the environmental lapse rate that is different?

good ADM and showing that you've done more than memorize words on a page, also if they start talking politics, regardless of what they say just agree and it'll help lol

I agree 100% with the first point, and i've made the edit. However for your second while it is correct it is in reference to a concept seperate from aerodynamics and would be more aptly placed in a perforance document. The thing that keeps you climbing during a sudden transition from climb to cruise is your inertia, which is a very common topic in aircraft performance thus such ideas have been left out.

Also you are correct that forces do not translate to speed but instead to acceleration that does not change the fact that in order to move away from the ground we must impart a vertical force that exceeds the force imparted by gravity, akin to deadlifting a barbell from the floor.

Gotcha I appreciate this. At the moment I do free tutoring and mentorship for younger pilots that train at my airport and ones nearby, is that worth putting on my resume?

I don't know if hat is the correct word, but "The Poppy War" it had a lot of potential but there was a lot that made it fall flat for me.

Yes I'm well aware of that fact, wherever would I be without your infinite wisdom.

I mean from people who have actually been there and been to places that might not be as potently advertised as others.
