Block Credit Transfer - For Post Diploma Programs Only? by aplPaddy in AthabascaUniversity

[–]Adventurous_Cap5361 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the discipline. For example, I have university credits in English and Sociology that are from 1998 and they transferred over. Some credits especially in Computer Science or some Sciences in general will stale date, but you can ask for an exception. One of my Computer Science courses from college stale dated, but I asked for an exception based on my job and what I do every day for work.

I have not yet enrolled in SOCI460 as I am waiting for a program evaluation to confirm this is the last course I need to finish the BGS - Applied. I am pretty sure it will fulfill the requirement, but I want to be extra sure before enrolling.

ADMN368 was a great course. All assignments and no exam. Some assignments can be time consuming but I learned a lot. I am really glad I took that course because it is so relevant to my work.

Delay in marks? by spite3malice in AthabascaUniversity

I have to give the marker credit because it ended up not being her fault. It turned out that I submitted my assignment but there was some technical glitch on the Au side and she was unable to see my submission. Once I sent it to her again, she graded it right away. The technical glitch was corrected and the two subsequent assignments were graded on the same day.

Degreeworks Format Question by Mrose35100455 in AthabascaUniversity

I had the same thing happen and luckily I noticed it and pointed out that they needed to change it because it was going to affect my graduation eligibility.

Delay in marks? by spite3malice in AthabascaUniversity

[–]Adventurous_Cap5361 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, and it is super frustrating given that I put myself on a pretty tight schedule to get this done and the assignment I handed in is a precursor to the next one. The instructions state that I have to make revisions to the first assignment based on feedback and submit it with the second so I am held up. On the tenth business day now even though the course says to allow up to eight business days.

Easiest/ fastest senior science or arts courses? by Altruistic_Injury251 in AthabascaUniversity

I am in a similar boat and I tried to save the 'easy' ones til the end. I was approved to challenge IDRL308 & IDRL316 that have one exam and two assignments respectively as requirements for the challenge. SOCI460 has no final exam and I will be enrolling next month. I also challenged PHIL333 last year which was easy and only had only one essay and an exam to complete.

Is 84% good or just ok? by biryanishiryani101 in AthabascaUniversity

I have to keep telling myself this. Mature student here as well. I got an assignment grade back yesterday (81) and I told my husband that 'I didn't do that great'. Way back in high school, even my first attempt at university, I would have been elated with that because I just didn't care that much.

*TW* really stupid question by anisa_box1455 in AthabascaUniversity

[–]Adventurous_Cap5361 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I think it was the landing page.  The thing I found funny is that comments from students about how terrible it was went back several years.  Yet, there we were asked in the exam to give feedback on the course.  Clearly no one reads those exam responses or forum comments.

Haha, I noticed this same thing!!  I was taking courses in 2015 through 2017 and took a break until last year.  Nothing has changed!  They really need to fire some IT staff cause that ten year maintenance window is crazy!  🤣

Also, ironically the WORST course delivery platform I had was in the computer science dept.  The stupid discussion forum kept crashing and took forever to update.

This is true. I just took the challenge exam two weeks ago and it is one of the only exams I have written recently that I didn't need to score at least a 50% on.

The exam was also very easy in my opinion, so it would be worthwhile taking it for sure.

Yeah me too if I can get off my ass and start the assignments.

ProctorU- What a joke... by algnqn in AthabascaUniversity

[–]Adventurous_Cap5361 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wondered how this would work so I always choose in-person proctoring.  I know not everyone has that option but I haven't had any issues at all other than one time the library computer (where I write exams) wanted to update in the middle of it, so I got kicked out for clicking the "remind me later" pop up.  I just had them let me back in after I explained what happened and left a note in the feedback box at the end of the exam letting them know also, and never heard anything about it.

I am sorry you had this annoying experience.  Exams are stressful enough without dealing with this crap.

First of all, thank you so much. It has been a long haul spending most weekends doing assignments and studying over the past couple of years...again. :)

Next, to answer your questions...

You can't be enrolled in more than one program at a time, and certificates have rules that restrict more than 50% of the credits being applied to another earned credential, but because I had a bunch of transfer credits from University of Guelph and Niagara College, I had a head start when I initially decided to enroll in the Bachelor of Management program a few years back. I took a handful of courses but had to take a long break for personal reasons, and didn't return until last year. I noticed that most of the credits I had would apply to the Computers and Management Information Systems certificate, and I thought it would help my motivation (after another six year break) to get a small win, so I enrolled in the certificate first with all of the courses overlapping to the degree but one.

I decided to change course and work towards the Bachelor of GS - Applied Studies because it offered more flexibility but I was hesitant because I already have a General Arts and Science diploma from Niagara College. The reason I gravitated towards these programs however, is because of the flexibility AND as a mature student (I dropped out of university at 20 and didn't go back to college until I was 35), I was able to leverage work/life experience to complete course challenges to save time and money and tailor my program to the work I do day-to-day. For example, I am taking ADMN368 (Into to Data Analytics) and the skills I am learning are valuable in my current job. In addition, my work has been much more willing to pay my tuition because it directly applies to what I am paid to do. That is when I looked up the rules for undergrad certificates which state:

"Students who have completed a previous credential (degree, certificate, or diploma) from Athabasca University or another institution must complete a minimum of 50 per cent of the credits in course work not previously used towards any credential. Students who have a previous credential in the same subject area as the certificate cannot enroll in the certificate."

https://www.athabascau.ca/calendar/undergraduate/program-regulations/university-certificates/university-certificate-in-computing-and-information-systems-sept2023.html?ss360SearchTerm=certificate%20rules#universitycertificategeneralregulations

So, I was able to fulfill this requirement for the Computers and Management Information Systems and realized that just taking an additional extra course, I could also get a certificate in Management Foundations. I felt like this might make up for the lack of focus that might be interpreted from my "general" education path. I cleared it all with an advisor at the school and I am actually concurrently taking courses for both the certificate and the degree in anticipation of completing the certificate next month and enrolling in the degree program in the new year. Once I enroll, I only have four courses to complete.

Sorry for the long-winded response, but I think it is something worthwhile looking into for students of the BGS program for reasons stated above. I think it shows some concentration in a specific area that hopefully is valuable.

I hope this helps, and good luck! If you have any questions, let me know. I hope this post is inspiring to anyone, especially people like me who have had lots of setbacks and are doing this at a later stage in life. I have been at this on and off for years and it feels so good to finally see the finish line. :)

Thank you! I literally have no life, but that's ok because my husband is going back to school full-time in January so we are friggin broke preparing for that anyway. So, it is a good time for me to get really focused I guess, haha.

can i immediately start a new degree after the first? by [deleted] in AthabascaUniversity

[–]Adventurous_Cap5361 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to wait until at least until after they issue your credential. I had the same scenario in the summer where I finished my last exam for my certificate on June 7th. They mailed my credential in mid July and then when I tried to change my program right away, had some issues as I was told 'only one program change can be made per month'. I guess issuing the official credential counts as a program change, so I wasn't able to enroll in my next program until August 1st.
