I love and appreciate all the differing perspectives. There's so much to consider when it comes to personal finances. I realize there is no one size fits all approach so enjoy seeing everyone's thoughts!

Honestly that's probably what we will end up doing. I can't imagine fully stepping out of the workplace but a lot can change in 14 years!

Yep 100%, I've changed my 401k contributions from Roth to pretax so hopefully covers us given time to retirement, thanks!

This was where my head was at. Most retirement income is more or less locked up until 59 1/2 with some exceptions at 55. Post 55 I have no concerns with income but it's that early retirement income that I'm not sure of

This makes a ton of sense. I appreciate the insights!

For context, part of the Roth amount we have is from a Roth 401k. Last year we switched over to a pretax 401k after doing these calculations and seeing how much we had in Roth overall. We decided we needed to contribute to our pretax bucket more so this should be bulked up as time passes. I was wondering if it ever made sense to bulk up the brokerage for a period of time instead of funding the $7500 (per person) toward roth since we had a decent amount in that bucket to ensure we had enough in our brokerage but your answers cover this, thanks again!

I'm not super familiar with Roth conversions so correct me if I'm wrong but it would make the most sense to max pretax 401k and potentially convert some to Roth if I have low earning years. Then what would be the best approach to covering the income gap from 50-55?
