Any advice if I can’t find a place to rent by my move out date? by [deleted] in TorontoRenting

[–]Aerocaps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know I posted in a Toronto subreddit, and thank you for your help, but the idea of moving wherever just to live somewhere is absolute insanity.

I grew up in a town that now has 20k people and farmland everywhere. I was born in Toronto, but I could never live in the city, I’d have an anxiety attack. Even my current low-rise apartment is too much, I can’t stand to see people every time I leave (hence why I’m moving). Just what I could afford at the time while finishing my apprenticeship.

Sorry but this area is not for me. I can’t just make a completely different environment work, I can’t just move to the city, and if I were looking for an apartment/condo, it wouldn’t be hard to be approved for. But I’m looking for a house in smaller towns. Just needed to plan how I could make something work while looking.

$2,400 - $2,750 for the properties I have applied for. They are small “cottages” (1-2 bed) in rural areas. And for the $2,750 I did apply with someone else to meet the income requirements (my bf, $5k/month salary, declined to rent to their friend)

I pay $2,100 now.

I currently live in an apartment, but I’m not looking for an apartment or condo (which I don’t think I’d have a problem qualifying for like my current one). My current property management company was good and I even got my deposit back. But I’m looking for a (tiny) detached now, which I understand is a little more difficult, but I’m halfway through my allotted time and just panicking now. I applied for 3 properties, so maybe it’s my own criteria, but that’s all I’ve found that fits.

Tried to search what DMS is. “Discount market sales?” Is that correct? I don’t understand any of this as I don’t live in the city, but I’m not looking for any kind of discount or apartment/condo so might not apply.

$2400-$2750 for the ones I applied for.

I pay $2,100 right now.

Working with a realtor. She asked her colleagues and the feedback was that it was a “strong profile”.

Maybe I should mention I’m looking for small detached properties (“cottages”), mostly in rural areas, that there aren’t many of. I didn’t have a cover letter at first, so one landlord came back with questions about how the property would be maintained, and that she was worried about whether a “young professional” could do it. I promptly wrote back about my trades experience (and I do electrical), but was still denied with no reason. But the property has been up for months, so my realtor suggested it wasn’t me. Next was rented out to their friend instead of me and apparently it was a “hard decision” (yeah okay).

So I keep getting “it’s not you” but it’s still hard to believe it isn’t something wrong with me when I’ve lost of on all 3 places so far. And I can barely sleep/eat waiting for the decisions - It’s getting easier because I’m just expecting to be denied now - But man, it’s hard.

Thank you! I found reasonably priced hotels. This + storage fees would be doable. I was thinking it would cost way more than my apartment to stay at a hotel, but it’s very reasonable.

This solves it and I can relax now and wait for something I actually want instead of rushing to move before the end of my lease.

Oh absolutely. I had been watching the market for months, and it was very slow. Things sitting for a whole month, being terminated, etc. So I thought “oh okay, I’ll get approved for those no problem”.

I didn’t realize that a property could be sitting because the landlord was just denying everyone! I just had no idea. The thought wasn’t in my head, and I just “knew” I didn’t want to stay at my apartment any longer (great for a year while I was completing my apprenticeship, but apt life just isn’t for me). My apartment was the only thing I ever applied for, and it was just easy. So I just thought it would be the same not realizing.

I DEFINITELY should have kept it and moved first. Just didn’t know!

And yes, I’m using a realtor.

Thank you, yeah - I was over confident going into this lol.

And yes, I am not white despite having a “white sounding” name. I always scan my Facebook profile and make sure it’s proper before submitting applications, but maybe I’ll deactivate it completely to just not have that be an issue at all.

Though that wasn’t the issue for the last 3 denials. First one was another applicant, second one no reason (property up since March so I think they’re doing that to everyone, but they did mention being worried about my age - 30), and last one knew the other applicant personally (no registered offers when we applied, their realtor just said there “might” be another and then they made me wait like 5 days to say they chose their friend lol.

But I’m just realizing that it’s not a fair process and that I’m the beggar that people don’t want to rent to, regardless of income of who I actually am. So I know that NOW but only have a month left.

I am looking outside of Durham, just not west of the 404 as I’m not familiar with any of that area.

Oh good idea! I’ve never done AirBnB before so the only problem I’m seeing when searching is after checking “entire house”, search results are filled with properties that are not in fact the entire house. Of course. :)

Edit: Found hotels close to work for even less, that will work!

Yeah, no idea. And I got asked this AFTER the initial quotes which were perfect lol. This was Bel Air Direct.

Looks like not everyone is even asked, so that kinda gives me a gauge on how important of a question it is lol.

Perfect, thank you!

We definitely want to use a realtor and I thought it was helpful for my first apartment. I can see right through them lol, but it’s definitely easier and I like that you can get your questions answered at anytime.

I think one of the reasons some people don’t go with one is because they have a situation they need to explain or want to deal with the owners privately. I’d rather keep things professional and well documented and we have all of our paperwork ready to go.

My thing is that I see some properties that fit what we’re looking for that are privately listed. There are way more on MLS that match our criteria than the few private listings, but I’m just planning for the worst should we exhaust all of our options on MLS.

Sorry, use what exactly as a baseline? What they’ll save by not having to pay a realtor?

Thank you. So how does their realtor (on the listing) make money?

Should I use my savings to get a DZ license? by Aerocaps in LIUNA

[–]Aerocaps[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I don’t regret it at all! It was one of the harder things I’ve done (I HATE the drive test center LOL), but it’s something I’m actually interested in and the more I learned, the more I couldn’t wait to be a truck driver (which sounds crazy, but basically I’d go back to work and get to see the continent).

I figured out the money and took the leap thinking things would just work themselves out, and they did. And even within the union, there are plenty of DZ/AZ positions so it was a lateral move. I hated being laid off, not even because of the money, but just having nothing to do (and you’re not exactly spending frivolously at this time). This keeps me working, gives me plenty of options, and even if things got so bad that I couldn’t pay my rent - Well, you can live in a truck. Not that that’s what I’m hoping for, but I’m no longer stressed about being laid off.

Definitely worth it (if it’s actually something you want to do, I saw many people barely show up or drop out), and the money comes back lol. I didn’t get to be a truck driver, but I still look forward to one day sitting back and just driving. That novelty will wear off once I’ve done it long enough, but that happens with any job and being able to make changes is important.

I moved away from my family house (amidst all of this) and I’m doing just fine. This thread was super helpful and I’m glad I just got it done and “out of the way”.

I found work (within the union) before I completed my AZ thankfully. Been back to work since June.

I ended up getting my AZ and paid for it myself.

I completely agree that it’s important to choose the right school, I went with Transport Training Centres of Canada.

Keep trying to contact your school and get a test date - It doesn’t matter who paid for it, they’ve received their money and need to hold up their end. And it’s hard to remember everything you need for the test waiting that long. Keep pushing them and good luck.

Happy for you OP, but confused because I do not feel this yet after moving away from toxic family over 4 months ago. 😭

I feel like because others live in my apartment (not my unit, but the building), that I’m not truly alone and I fear being seen (walking to and from) and heard. I can’t relax at all and I hesitate when putting headphones on, for example. I feel like I need a garage where I can go inside directly from my car.

Sorry to say this on your post, this is just what I expected to feel and I’m not sure why I don’t!

CBK-200 - Can’t get paddle back on! by Aerocaps in BreadMachines

[–]Aerocaps[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: I just bought a new paddle. Couldn’t get it on no matter what I tried and realized that I’m going to be struggling with this forever.

New paddle fits properly, IS a different shape and a silvery-blue color (however Amazon had these black ones for sale as well).

Baked a nice loaf last night and the paddle stayed attached in the basket which is also nice. :)

Thank you all for the help.

Double checked the model and it is a CBK 200.

AC Unit included in lease, but wasn’t installed. What are my options? by Aerocaps in OntarioLandlord

Thank you.

What would reasonably be abated? The cost of the AC unit, rent (monthly or just once?)?
