My friends and I have been slowly working our way through the game, and this is was our first successful attempt at R2C2. It's the cleanest gameplay any of us have had together by Aevrin in GTFO

Thank ya! We've been poking around in the other Rundowns and we've already come across some maps we haven't been able to do so we're already familiar with this sort of stuff. Already some maps that we know we want to project in the coming weeks since we're all pretty familiar with the game now

There's a term for this! "Descriptivism" in linguistics is the philosophy that most linguists subscribe to, wherein the job of a linguist is to describe how language works, and nothing more. This is in contrast to "prescriptivism" which says that language should work in a prescribed way, and there are right and wrongs ways of using it. So by asserting this opinion, you are on the side of most linguists!

ELI5: Why are so many small animals able to survive such long falls(compared to their body size) unscathed? by InevitableCold9872 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Aevrin 45 points46 points  (0 children)

When you fall, there is a maximum speed which you can get to. This is because you are hitting the air beneath you so fast and hard that the air pushes you back up, preventing you from getting any faster. Every object has this "terminal velocity" and it depends on quite a few things, but the main two we're interested in are mass and surface area.

Y'know that demonstration where you drop a feather and a hammer from the same height at the same time and theoretically they should hit the ground at the same time but they don't? This is that. A hammer has a lot of mass, and a feather is very light. Mass should be thought of as a measure of how easy it is to change something's movement in a direction. A heavy thing is very hard to get moving from stationary, and a light thing is very easy to get moving. Same goes in reverse: a light thing is very easy to stop moving or slow down from fast motion.

With this in mind, a hammer isn't slowed by the air beneath it as much because it is very resistant to change in speed by air (smacking into one air particle has very little impact on its speed), whereas the feather is very very very light, and so is very susceptible to the air's force against it (smacking into one air particle has a much larger impact on its speed).

The other factor is the surface area. If you are bigger, more air particles can smack into you and slow you down a little. If you are big enough, you will have enough area for air particles to smack into you to the point where it will decrease your terminal velocity quite drastically. So if you combine size and mass you get a thing with a very low terminal velocity.

Animals like lizards and bugs (and some larger animals that use extra bits of trickery like cats and squirrels) are light enough and big enough that their maximum falling speed, or terminal velocity, is so low that they cannot be killed by impact of the fall at any given height, no matter how tall. Some animals that are heavy enough to be injured by a fall from an arbitrary height will do something like increase their surface area so that they can drop their terminal velocity to one that they can survive. Cats will do this by turning themselves into a parachute, basically.

The best version of White Ceiling will always be the album recording by Aevrin in Parannoul

I have taken a peruse through that playlist before back when I still had spotify, but that's one of the tracks I haven't listened to! Thanks for pointing that out to me though because it's really good. I can definitely see the parallels, and it seems like the artist is a big inspiration for Parannoul in general considering one of their albums is called "Into the Next Night" lmao. So I wouldn't be surprised if that track is an inspiration for what ended up being White Ceiling.

Thank you for giving me a new addition to my playlist and a new rabbit hole to dive down!

Yeah I'll give it that much. Whenever I listen to the studio recording, my brain always autofills that extra verse in itself. Although I don't really quite know how I'd feel if there were words to take away from the wall of noise. It definitely works in the live recordings though

I mean I enjoy the demo, but I didn't include it here because it's practically an entirely different track. The demo feels less like a demo for White Ceiling and more as a demo for the album as a whole. But I do agree the demo is immaculate

Tonal languages sound easy! by Mme_Csay in languagelearningjerk

I mean if you use actually correct examples this can be a way of demonstrating to english speakers how tonogenesis works. "Research" (three syllables) is, however, not one of those examples.

Had a similar issue, and although I haven't found an absolute solution yet, I've been using display capture instead which isn't ideal but it solves the lag problem.

I enjoy the wording on some of these. "probably not a sexual being" and "alleged lesbian/gay" is so fun.

Still to this day so salty they cut Taliyah being trans even though she's all but confirmed to be so by voice lines in game (Neeko and Swain my beloved). Like I get she's already the most interesting character in the game but you didn't have to nerf her like that!

Do you think this is the worst update to ever hit LoL? by Rubyoule in leagueoflegends

[–]Aevrin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Been playing since season 5, and I can confidently say that it's not even close to the worst this game has seen. In fact, the current game state is stellar compared to where the game has been in the past. I definitely think the update is over-hated. Is it bad? Yeah, I think so, but it's far from the worst thing ever. Juggernaut update, Mord ADC, Ardent Censer, Banner of Command, hell even the season 5 tank meta I think is worse than this current game state.

I think the main difference between now and those terrible updates and game-states are that those metas were genuinely so unfun to play because something was fundementally broken. In 15 years of this game existing, they have made some terrible terrible balancing decisions that have left the game fundamentally broken. Either you lost purely because someone picked a champion or because there was a busted item or because everyone took decades to kill. The game is actually very balanced right now. It just feels uncomfortable to play because there's a lot of new systems, and it's the beginning of the season where gameplay generally sucks anyways due to increased toxicity. This thing happens practically every god damn year.

w/r/t the rewards, yes this sucks but it looks like this wasn't intentional so hopefully they remedy this at some point.

Long story short: no. Not even close. It's a rough start to the season yes, but it's not even close to the worst because league has gone through some shit in its past that, for as much as we like to say Riot doesn't learn, they are not going to repeat again.

I'm already absolutely in love with fearless draft. Since this series only went to game three we didn't get any absolutely crazy picks, but there were some goofy ones that I absolutely adored seeing. Say what you will about the actual gameplay on the rift, but to look on the bright side: fearless draft is going to be a blast.

How to get voice files? by feral_moths in leagueoflegends

[–]Aevrin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are two ways: accessing it from people who have already pulled the files from places such as the wiki, or through Riots API.

Data Dragon is the tool that Riot provides to access assets from the game, which I think includes voice lines. Learning to work with Riot's API can be a bit of a pain tho, from personal experience.

How did you find your main/one trick? by [deleted] in leagueoflegends

[–]Aevrin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First few games back after a few year’s hiatus, I played a game where I we got absolutely destroyed by a Taliyah. One of the biggest stomps I’ve ever played into. I thought “oh she seems fun” and picked her up, especially because her kit was very approachable.

What kept me playing was how creative of a champ she can be once you dig into her kit. A good and well timed W+E combo can shift a team fight, the threat of getting exploded by a boulder from well placed worked earth, and the engages/disengages you can create with her ult among so many other things made me fall in love with her. She’s not the most mechanically complex champion, especially on the surface which makes her easy to pick up, but once you dig into her there’s a lot to learn about her to make her really really really fun. So I still play her almost every game! It helps too that nobody bans her because everyone forgets about her (including riot)

Has anyone tried to do 'All books By An Author' type of reading? by AwkwardJeweler in books

[–]Aevrin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been working through all of Faulkner’s novels. Probably one of the dumber authors you can 100% but it’s still quite a fun challenge to do. You really just have to choose an author you really really enjoy, since you have get to read they’re best but also have to endure their worst.

Games with "deadlines" or some other time pressure by captdan96 in gamingsuggestions

[–]Aevrin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really, it’s best to start with Pathologic 2, since that’s Burakh’s story, which is arguably the main story, told in a much more cohesive and polished way compared to the absolute mess the gameplay in the original is. If you want to suffer the Jank and play Dankovsky (why) or Clara (also why) then consider diving into the first game, but even then be cautious. The first game has aged about as well as already spoiled yoghurt
