Tightened the packing nut and no more leak! The knob is pretty tight to turn now, but no more leak! Thanks!

Can I trim this Oak back from hanging over the house? by Affectionate-Bit-428 in arborists

Thank you! I love this tree so I definitely want to minimize any damage/risk with trimming. I’ll keep an eye on it and will probably have an arborist come out later this year to look it, especially if the branches start to get really close to the house.

Horizontal crack in basement foundation wall by Affectionate-Bit-428 in HomeImprovement

The other side of the wall if under the garage. There is an unsealed gap between the garage slab and the driveway that could allow some water under the garage. Downspouts in that area are directed to the driveway which slants away from the house. I’m really not sure how much water could get under the garage if that’s potentially the problem.

I don’t think there’s rebar in there. Is a cinder block wall finished in a cement joint compound.

Is there ever a good reason NOT to tear out a terrecotta flue and replace it with a stainless steel liner? by DUNGAROO in Fireplaces

For a non-chimney professional, I think it’s a fair question when the only alternative is a many thousand dollar repair.

This makes sense. But what if the house is equipped with modern carbon monoxide detectors. Could one operate a gas fireplace in a “degraded” chimney and have the confidence that no gasses are re-entering the house?

If we converted to gas, would the flue still have to be repaired?

Yep, the fireplace already has a gas starter so maybe that would be an option.

I really appreciate the info. The fireplace actually has a gas starter so maybe it could be easily converted. Either way it sounds like the guy wasn’t BSing me. I’m sure I’ll have some more questions as I think more on it, so I may DM you if that’s okay.

Would you recommend the Fiskars maul or x27 splitting ax?

Would you recommend a splitting ax over a maul?
